The 2022 Academy Awards

The 2022 Academy Awards (aka The Oscars) will be the 94th time the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences celebrates the movies made in the previous year.

The 94th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), will honor the best films released between March 1 and December 31, 2021, and is scheduled to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, on March 27, 2022.

For the first time in four years the ceremony will have official hosts. And for the first time since 2011, there will be multiple co-hosts: Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall will share the role.

Last week saw the nominations being announced and Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog leads the field with an amazing 12 nominations. It’s the first film directed by a woman to receive more than ten nominations and its director, Jane Campion, is now the only woman to receive more than one Academy Award nomination for Best Director - this is her second after 1993’s The Piano nomination.

The Power of the Dog is currently streaming on Netflix.

The only other movie to score double digit nominations this year is Dune with 10 Oscar shots. Kenneth Branagh’s ode to his Irish roots, Belfast and Steven Spielberg’s retelling of the classic West Side Story follow with 7 nominations apiece.

Below are the nominees in the main categories. I thought it would be a bit of fun to put the top 10 awards into polls to see how good our Oscar Predictions are. You’ll have until midnight SAST on Sunday, 27 March to cast your votes, with the ceremony schedule to start at 3 in the morning on Monday, 28 March.

Hmmm of all the movies nominated I’ve only watched Don’t Look Up.

Out of them, I only saw 2 Dune and Raya, so I voted for those

I used to watch the Oscar nominated movies each year just to make my own mind up, but the past few years have been such lackluster movies I just don’t have the time or patients to sit through such snorefest movies anymore.

Not something I watch.

I watched The Power of the Dog. I did enjoy it. It’s a taut, engaging drama with many good performances. I’d be surprised if it doesn’t win anything.

Accurate take from Ozzyman. It was a tasteless joke, but he was roasting a number of people in his bit. The reaction from Smith was completely over the top and his shouting vulgarities from his seat afterwards was beyond unnecessary. Not naming Rock in his apology was also classless. Lost a lot of respect for him. And I’m sure there were a bunch of Academy voters who instantly regretted their Best Actor vote for him.

I see the return of two minute broadcast delays for future live broadcasts like this.
