You missed nothing. They didnāt do any actual qualifying, just drove around the track very slowly. James May sort of pace.
We found it absolutely hilarious.
But we were crying on the inside a little.

Are the commentators actual commentators from the normal races? Sounds similar to them, I suck with names. Maybe Martin and Karun?

Carrying the highest average speed round corners may not actually be the quickest way around a track. This is something that takes time.
Itās something that Iāve been struggling with. Still experimenting.
Sadly a lot of it comes down to driving style. Iāll use examples:
Alain Prost - 4 Time world champion employed a smooth, relaxed style behind the wheel. Prost would often conserve his brakes and tyres early in a race, leaving them fresher for a challenge at the end
Ayrton Senna - Had an extremely aggressive āharshā driving style. He apparently ran extremely high brake pressure, would come hot into a corner pop the brakes hard. Trail brake and then tap the accelerator (sometimes multiple times) before applying full throttle as soon as possible
Michael Schumacher - Smooth and tight. Seemed to have a braking technique that was employing gradually increasing brake pressure, trail braking and allowing the car to carry momentum (sometime past the apex) before accelerating hard.
Lewis Hamilton - Modeled his racing style on Senna, extremely aggressive. He then often exceeds tyre grip limits and only then, after exerting peak pressure on the pedal, begins to control the action of the braking system.
Max Verstappen - Seems to have a smooth and flowing style (akin to Alain Prost), he transitions from a straight line to releasing the brakes and turning towards the apex. His racing lines are āsquareā, keeping the car in a straight line before corner entry for longer than most other drivers.
Carlos Sainz - Is what I like to call a feedback driver. The style is better suited to other racing disciplines like rallying (canāt really blame him, his old man is a legend). In that almost everything you as a driver do is in response to what feedback the car is giving to you. These type of drivers can drive harder and faster than most, but require more time in the cockpit to dial themselves in.

FIA changed rules to let Prost winā¦these rules still stand today.
