I disagree with your calling it a lack of skill - I’d suggest he rather doesn’t have focus of the regular podium winners, and never had the right car under him at the right time. One does not win Le Mans with a lack of skill.
I do agree that he’s overrated, though. And that he’s RP’s best shot, unless Vettel walks today

Hulkenberg is a solid driver but he is really poor at overtaking. As a Renault fan I focus on the Renault cars and there were times last year where Ricciardo would slice through the field and Hulkenberg couldn’t overtake one slower car that was in front of him the whole race.
Really like him though and I hope he gets the seat and a podium.

Warning: This get very speculative.
Reading between the lines, that also says a lot. Today is the deadline for RP to renew Perez’s contract. With the rumours floating around about Vettel possibly going to RP. I mean, it’s likely reading too much into a social media manager having some fun, but it does perhaps speak to the team’s attitude towards Checo.
