Incredible season of F1. If the new regs and cars next year help bring even more of the cars and drivers than just Max and Lewis closer together all the better. Iā€™d love a 2022 final race with 4 or 5 drivers all in with a chance of winning the title.

F1 are really going to need to spend time in the off season clarifying race rules, stewards roles and decisions, and the impact of all these very inconsistent decisions and rule interpretations. The need for a pool of 5-10 permanent stewards that rotate between GPs is hugely apparent. And the role of the Race Director needs to be revisited. (And letā€™s sort out that Red Flag repairs issue we discussed last week as well while weā€™re at it.)

Drive to Survive may need more than ten episodes to get through this season! :grinning:

Next year will have a new Champion, a new era of F1 cars, new circuits, new drivers, a brazillion new fans of the sport,ā€¦ F1 is in a good place.

I agree if the next years car allow for more close racing they need to have better rules and no confusion.

But dam ! what a race I never gave up hope !

Can someone ELI5 what happened? What would the difference have been if all (or none) of the lapped cars were allowed to overtake the safety car?

Funnily enough, a red flag would have been a good call here if the FIAā€™s objective was ā€œItā€™s about the racingā€

There might have not been enough time to let all of them through before the start of the last lap and subsequently the end of the race. The FIA told Toto that the decisions was made to allow racing (it was kind of vague), so they only let the lapped cars between Max and Lewis through to allow them to race in the last lap.
If they hadnā€™t, Lewis would have won for sure.

I was just about to come back and clarify this. It would have taken an extra safety car lap to allow everyone not only to overtake and unlap themselves, but to take up position again behind the safety car all in a neat row. So basically they half-assed it, to not let the championship end under a safety car.

Agreed. Except doubt there would have been enough time for that either. The correct decision, regardless of how unpleasant and boring, should have been to finish under the SC. To a degree I understand Massiā€™s efforts to try ā€œlet them raceā€ after all that has happened this season, and all the times the team bosses have asked him to do exactly that. But he should have done the boring thing, run the race to the end under the SC, and Lewis should be the winner and Champion.

Massi, as the Race Director, is supposed to uphold the sportsā€™ rules and that should supersede everything. The fact that Wolff and Horner are forever whining in his ear trying to influence his decisions is ridiculous. Itā€™s like having a football team manager debate every on-field decision with the referee while the match is still being played.

Itā€™s a sporting event, and to now have actual lawyers involved in making a decision about a race result (yes it has huge implications down the line, but ultimately, itā€™s a single race decision) is just daft.

The wait is over, max is the new champ

ā€œThe protest deposit is not refunded.ā€ I wonder how much it costs a team to lodge a protest? Not that it matters to Merc who had a high-powered British lawyer with them at the circuit the entire weekend in the event that they would need to protest something.

Presumably theyā€™ll now lodge an appeal against the decision at the Court of Arbitration, so weā€™ll have to wait for that decision before truly confirming that Max is the champion.

What a terrible way for the best F1 season in ages to have to end - in a courtroom. Both drivers and their teams deserved more after putting in so much effort this year. This should have been done and dusted and celebrated at the checkered flag, one way or another.

Donā€™t let all of this distract you from the fact that Carlos Sainz took 3rd and so did Ferrari in the Constructors!!!

Sainz is definitely NOT regretting moving to Ferrari now, they really turned things around this year.

After getting back into watching F1 in 2019 (thanks to the F1 2019 league and the discussions on the forum) I can definitely say that I am a committed fan. There have been so many fantastic moments over the last two years.

My hopes and dreams for 2022:
More contenders in the WDC fight. Thereā€™ll be Verstappen and Hamilton obviously but Iā€™d love to see Russell and Perez challenging too. If Ferrari and McLaren can challenge for more wins that will be great. Itā€™s time for Sainz and Norris to taste their first victories.

A closer field (one could only hope) where 75% over the field donā€™t get lapped.

Iā€™m hoping that Haasā€™s skipping development on the car this year will mean a more competitive car in 2022 so that we actually have 20 cars racing. Mick did quite well considering the car and it would be good to see what he can do in a more competitive machine.

Iā€™m also looking forward to more of Alonso - his season has produced so many ā€œfeel goodā€ moments.
