Checo takes the Sprint!

Contact between George and Max on lap one causing sidepod damage to the Red Bull:

Max, in classic Max style, suggesting that George needs to “…expect the next time the same you know… Dickhead!”

So there was a race in Baku earlier today it seems. A bit of a pedestrian affair to be honest. Really solid weekend for Checo - Sprint and Grand Prix wins in Azerbaijan take him to within 6 points of the Max man. The best weekend of the year so far too for Charles Leclerc. P3 today for his first podium of the season, but absolutely unable to get anywhere near the Red Bulls.

Decent points for the Astons again. Russell managed to not hit anyone for the whole race, but it left him languishing behind Lewis at the end. Points to for Lando - good to see the Macca in the Top 10 list eventually.

Off to Miami next weekend for some over the top shenanigans. Red Bull will get there almost 100 points clear of Aston Martin in the Constructor’s Championship and with their two drivers comfortably settled on the top of the Driver’s Championship.

Still a 19-race season to come though - stuff could, and probably will, still happen…

Race highlights, such as there were “highlights”…

So I missed the race coz I had to go to my folks, so I just caught the start of the race and saw there was a safety car(I see Verstappen got shafted by it, and apparently Hamilton too?), but I see the positions didn’t change much after Le Clerc got overtaken, which was expected.
Happy for a Ferrari 3 and 5 for now. If we can keep this going till we can catch up in terms of deg(never) and DRS I’ll be happy.

Random Trivia

  • The track had been proposed as early as October 2019 with an initial design at the venue, with up to 75 circuit designs having been considered, and 36 being simulated, before the final layout was selected.
  • Despite being a “street circuit”, the circuit does not use any public streets that are located around the Hard Rock Stadium, though it does cross public roads.

The Schedule

Yankee time is wack, Jack! Expect some late night F1 viewing, if you’re up for it. As it’s not a Sprint Race weekend, we return to the standard weekend format again. FP1 and FP2 on Friday are at 20:00 and 23:30 respectively. Practice 3 is on Saturday evening at 18:30, and is followed at 22:00 by Qualifying. The race itself is off at the more reasonable time of 21:30 on Sunday.

The Circuit

The Miami International Autodrome is a purpose-built temporary circuit around the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the NFL’s famous Miami Dolphins franchise, and its private facilities in the Miami suburb of Miami Gardens, Florida. The circuit is 5.412 km long and features 19 corners and 3 DRS zones.

When was the track built?
It wasn’t – Baku is the newest street circuit on the Formula 1 calendar, joining the ranks of Monaco, Melbourne and Singapore.

When was its first Grand Prix?
The inaugural Miami Grand Prix took place in 2022, the Florida race joining its Texan counterpart in Austin to become the second US race on the calendar – and the 11th different American venue to host a round of the Formula 1 world championship.

What’s the circuit like?
A street-track spectacular. With the Hard Rock Stadium at its epicentre, the 5.41km layout features 19 corners, three straights, three DRS zones, and top speeds of over 340km/h. There are elevation changes too, the main one found between Turns 13 and 16, with the track heading over an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground. The Turn 14-15 chicane, meanwhile, has an uphill approach, with a crest in the middle, and then drops down on exit.

The Weather

To add to the shiny neon lights and flashy glitz of the Miami circuit, this weekend could possibility see some weather of the wet kind down Miami way. There’s up to a 60% chance of rain during the race on Sunday. And running on Saturday may also be impacted by rain.

Friday: FP1 and FP2
Conditions: Expected to be cloudy to start the day, and it will remain dry for most of the day although rain is expected in the evening. FP1: 30°C // FP2: 29°C
Maximum temperature: 30°C // Minimum temperature : 20°C
Chance of rain: <20%

Saturday: FP3 and Qualifying
Conditions: A gentle breeze throughout the day but there is a slight chance of rain and a thunderstorms around the circuit. FP3: 30°C // Q: 30°C.
Maximum temperature: 31°C // Minimum temperature: 24°C
Chance of rain: 40%

SUNDAY, MAY 7 – RACE WEATHER
Conditions: High chance of rain and thunderstorms in the Miami area in the afternoon.
Race air temp: 30°C
Maximum temperature: 30°C // Minimum temperature: 24°C
Chance of rain: 60%

The Tyres

  • In Miami, the first of three grands prix to be held in the United States this year, the compounds chosen by Pirelli are: C2 as the P Zero White hard, C3 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and C4 as the P Zero Red soft.
  • The track, with 19 predominantly slow corners and three straights, is moderately demanding on tyres. The choice of three compounds from the middle of the range, rather than softer sets, is mainly due to the usually high track temperatures which reached 59°C last year.
  • The most used compounds in the 2022 race were medium and hard. Most of the drivers competed the grand prix with just one pit stop. The race was neutralised twice by a safety car and a virtual safety car, which allowed some teams to make a second pit stop.
  • The Miami circuit made its debut on the calendar in 2022 and winds around the Hard Rock Stadium, where the paddock will be set up this year: the team hospitality units will be located on the American football field where the Miami Dolphins usually play.
  • The organisers of the grand prix have had the 5.41 kilometres of track resurfaced for 2023. The previous surface, composed of limestone and granite, had been treated with powerful jets of water. The new surface is an unknown factor and will be analysed by Pirelli technicians during a track inspection carried out on Wednesday during the week of the race.
  • The Azerbaijan and Miami Grands Prix are the first consecutive race weekends in this year’s Formula 1 calendar. The trip is particularly demanding because of the eight-hour time difference between Baku and the Atlantic coast of the United States.
  • While in Baku the teams had very little practice time to test updates on their cars due to the debut of the new Sprint format, in Miami they will return to a more traditional schedule, with three free practice sessions preceding qualifying and the race.
  • The weather on the coast of Miami is very changeable. In 2022 the race was spared by rain, which fell only when the starting grid was being assembled with the high temperatures meaning that the track dried out before the race started. The possibility of downpours has to be taken into serious consideration.

Red Bull will be running the first of three liveries designed by fans for their “Make Your Mark” competition in Miami this weekend. (The other two US races in Las Vegas and at COTA will see the other two winner’s designs.)

So the fans designed a livery exactly the same as the traditional livery?

Yip, basically. But with “flashes of pink, purple and blue”. Which I guess makes it perfect for Miami? :man_shrugging:t2:

Good on you Lewis! And I hope he and everyone else with the opportunity to do so say “gay” as much as possible, the whole weekend.
