My recommendation is to move the geyser outside (if possible). Back in my previous house when the geyser burst, it cost about R2000 extra to just leave the old one where it is and put up a new one outside and redirect the pipes (most of the R2000 was for additional copper pipes). Now when the geyser bursts, it doesn’t damage anything and the only inconvenience is the lack of warm water (or any water depending on the setup) until the geyser is fixed. With all the houses I’ve built, I’ve always put the geyser outside.

This was an option we immediately considered doing. It’s never made sense to me that older houses in SA have geysers installed in the most inaccessible place imaginable.

Decided against it as we’re currently keeping an eye on as many spare pennies as we can while we wait to hear if any of the kid’s study grants and bursary funding applications are successful.

When I win the lottery and rebuild the house, the geyser is definitely going outside!

If I remember correctly, I explained to my insurance that I wanted to move the geyser outside to prevent future damage and it was going to cost a little bit more. They decided to pay out the maximum geyser cover amount which covered the geyser replacement and the move. It all depends on how much the plumber charged to replace the geyser and whether he charged the maximum amount. The insurers usually have set maximum cover amounts for 150L and 200L geysers and unless you used a plumber from the “yellow pages”, they usually don’t charge the full amount.

Definitely worth keeping in mind then. The replacement went in late yesterday so we’re sorted now. I sincerely hope we never have to go through another geyser replacement, but if we do, external geyser will definitely be the way we go.
