Greetings from the beautiful Drakensberg. We are here with the family, celebrating my mom’s 70th.
My heart bleeds…
Your current employer?
Morning mighty beings of great intellect!
Why are you excluding me?
Morning all
The scary thing is all the IT retrenchments happening. It made the staff in our company realise that they need to be careful.
Also afternoon people of the palace
Yep…
Mostly admin and support has gone as well as a fair few guys resigning.
Why are they being retrenched? Were their positions made redundant by automation/tools, or is it just cost cutting?
Cost cutting
The irony is their roles are gonna cause so much chaos without the people who did that specific work.
AI is being used by the devs, and I use chatgpt for some emails and creating docutments for proper directions to our new offices, or analysing plans to see best locations for artwork for the offices etc.
The market is really tough these days. As a dev agency ourselves, we find clients are very cautious when reaching out for proposals and are extra stringent in their vetting processes. I guess they’re also turning over their cents countless times to ensure they get the most bang for buck.
The other factor is the realisation that “IT” is pretty much entrenched in any facet of business these days, so the lucrative market of third-party service providers is giving way to any and all companies appointing their own IT resources on a full-time basis.
We’re trying to be smart and find ways of still adding value on a consultancy basis by leveraging certain domain knowledge we have, as “bums in seats” developers aren’t good enough anymore. With developers spitting out “good enough” code for new or prototype projects with the help of ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini / Grok / self-hosted models, we’ve also shifted our focus more towards expert consultancy (especially on large or enterprise ecosystems) than just writing code. Sure, the consultancy ends up in code being written, but just being proficient with an IDE in a couple of programming languages just isn’t a spearhead into new business anymore.
That is something our leavers are learning. . . . Some of them really I am not sad to see go since they think they are better than they really are - and now they are struggling to find work since they put down that they are high level and actually they are at most beginner/intermediate levels.
But for me the sad thing is the admin and PMO and even marketing teams that got cut
Morning all
Greets to the peeps!
Seems like a strange decision if you need to attract more business. Especially now that it is more dificult with the advent of AI coding as @FarligOpptreden describes.
Dude the maths isnt mathsing - so many people that got cut are vital to keep teams going and they do all the admin behind the teams and deal with the clients to keep projects up to date.
Its a mess and hugely stressful, we couldnt say anything since the company was in a closed period.
Just imagine being invited to a mandatory meeting, and the boss starts going on about where they are making cuts.
And some of the people they kept doesnt make sense…
Maar wat weet ek.
No raises or bonuses for us this year.
Also morning all
That’s really interesting to read.
I’ve been trying to get myself into a more traditional “software dev” role, but was warned against it by my manager. Obvious conflict of interest aside, he did have a point.
My role is actually a “consultant” role, even in title, though my actual work is a kind of software dev, but with “code-less” tools.
What types of tools are you using currently? Maybe I can suggest some upskilling path to “proper” software engineering? To be honest, skilled software engineers will never be replaced. “Coding” jobs might be, as that’s where AI offers loads of support. But I’ve done extensive testing using various AI models and they just can’t solve problems in complex projects, especially in large distributed systems.
Greetings, wet morning again
