I started as a proper dev, life took me elsewhere 
We mainly focus on ITSM (ticketing) tools. Things like Halo, ServiceNow, FreshService, Servicely etc. They need to be customised to spec. I usually deal with adding more to it via integrations or scripts.
These tools don’t typically allow access to their code, but we extend them through whatever APIs they expose, or through custom middleware.

Ah ok, so implementation / solution consultants rather than development consultants? Makes sense then. But there is still value in understanding how things work behind the scenes, even being able to build something bespoke when the need calls for it.

Imagine my shock this morning. I estimated R3mil for a thickener get the quote this morning for $1.8mil. Luckily nothing was submitted yet.

That’s… a lot. It’s the thickener for some weird material? High volume? Does the quote include installation, RAMS, and commissioning?

I questioned it and the salesman apologised, he put USD instead of ZAR in a rush. It’s only 15m3/h and only about 3% solids of UO4 and U3O8 crystals. I looked back at the last thickener price we had in 2015 and that was a 10m diameter thickener for R1.8m in 316SS and this was a 4m diameter thickener in CS RL. It didn’t feel right and it still needs to be shipped in from China. If they build it locally it will be more expensive.
I really feel we should be building stuff in this country.
Makes me think of the SmarterEveryDay video of trying to get a product built exclusively in USA.

I watched that when it came out really inspiring, and I love that he highlights that there needs to be a differentiator other than just “made locally”.
