Company year end function and Grade R graduation in the same day. It’s going to be draining.

Our grade R graduation is also today. I had no idea there were this many graduations for kids. Last year there was even a grade RR graduation.

Enjoy them while they happen. My youngest hits Grade 12 next year and then its no more kid to be involved with in school life.
Having your kids grow up is the goal of parenthood but there is a lot of sadness at the end of it.
Guess I have to wait to be a grandparent :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah, it’s become a bit crazy in my opinion. In my days we graduated from college/varsity and that was it.

Similarly there are prizes and ceremonies for almost everything like “participation” awards.

Agree. Our mentality and values in our house support the fact that we aren’t raising children but should be viewed as raising component adults.

But I hear your sentiments and it does resonate with me. My oldest is going into senior phase next year, grade 8. It happens so quickly.

My favourite kind of adult is the one where you chop up little children and take all the best pieces and put them together into a useful adult, ja.

:wink::grin:

I don’t know if it’s like this in other families, but I’m about to turn 40 and my parents are still very much a part of my life and involved and my mom is always going to be my mom, she still MOMS even though I’m old enough to have my own adults (if I’d had offspring, that is).

So don’t panic. You move from celebrating school stuff to celebrating adult stuff, like first house and degree and job and marriage and babies and all that stuff. My mom reckons her adult children are far more fun than her kid children ever were.

Why do I feel bad for charging R900ph for freelance work when moonlighting. I mean I am the one taking a risk and yet I still feel obliged to let them decide the rate and what is fair to them especially when the work is rush job which I delivered overnight.

That’s where the money is. If they need it over night, they’re the desperate one. I’m not saying to take advantage of their situation, I’m saying it’s reasonable compensation.

Scale it up. R900 * 8 * 21 = R151200 per month, which is an entirely reasonable monthly rate for contracting work out to someone of your level of experience.

You gave them the rate, they can choose to use you or not.

If they build the relationship with you, and use you often, then later on you can start thinking about giving them some discount like 2% for paying early or on time.

So much this! Just this week my fully adult child did a preliminary review presentation about her PhD proposal. It wasn’t even the actual proposal defense, just a test run to get the views and insights of some of the academics and supervisors before she delivers the actual presentation next February. Didn’t stop me proudly peacocking around like she’d just won the first of her Nobel Prizes in Medicine.

Makes me wonder why I’m locked into a job that pays a third of that.

With the sun already past its daily zenith, the weary traveller pushed through the swing doors of the MEW Saloon. Dusting off his worn shirt, he approached the bar counter. “A whiskey, Barkeep. And make it a double please,” he said, dropping the required credits onto the counter. “It’s been a long week.”
