greetings fellow people
It looks like they forgot to apply a bevel modifier.
Morning
Morning everyone.
I think I’m going to move to Afrihost fibre. They were my 2nd choice. CoolIdeas just has too much downtime.
I would love to move but don’t want to take the chance on the down time between the switch - plus it seems its not just cool ideas being attacked, I had reports of at least 2 more as well
yea cool ideas has been under attack for a while now its a big issue
I feel for CoolIdeas and am curious to understand why they seem to be getting hit so hard, so often. Is it because they have a big consumer user base that tend not to worry about, (or even know how to) secure their routers and update firmware, change DNS providers, etc? Why them more than other similar size ISPs? Or is it just a bit of confirmation bias on my part because they are my ISP?
That said though, the myBB forums are full of reports from other ISPs having issues as well this weekend.
Not just Cool Ideas - check the other threads - Afrihost, Webafrica, Axxess, Liquid Telecom, and others are also affected
I also heard RSAWeb had a big attack on Friday that impacted a lot of corporates. And there was the recent attacks on the banks as well.
The other thing that bugs me a little about these things is the way the ISPs and many of the thread and social media posts just assume that the average retail ISP home consumer is going to be pacified in their rage with technobabble and jargon. “Only these DNS providers are accessible”, “connect to VPN, problem solved”, “we are trying to mitigate 450-gazillion megabytepixelmeters of data flooding our data fat pipes on the SAIX undersea cable to our London vendor for Anti-DDOS data scrubbing.”
So we’ve had a fun day of no power
It’s been off since about 5am this morning and still nothing.
So there was an attempted robbery (with shots fired, possible fatality) at Bedford Centre. The place is under lockdown, the robbers are still possibly inside.
Good grief. Are you inside?
Yeah, I can understand wanting to switch. When Vox burned me, I also immediately started looking into options to switch. I’m glad I didn’t end up choosing Cool Ideas, even though I like them very much, or Afrihost/Axxess/Webafrica.
If you’re switching to avoid DDoS downtime, then @GregRedd has a point.
Afrihost, Axxess, and Webafrica also went down last night (they use they same upstream provider — Echo), and were able to mitigate in the early hours of the morning by rerouting their outbound International traffic via the Telkom network (inbound is still coming via Liquid, it seems).
RSAWEB was down on Friday.
I almost don’t want to say this, because I don’t want to help these bastards range their attacks, but I’m on Mind The Speed and they did not appear to be affected by these DDoS attacks. I could play Warframe yesterday, while my friends could not.
Another option is Vox. The network quality I got from them was generally great. You’ll just have to watch their accounts/billing T&Cs and that “annual price adjustment” of theirs. Just “upgrade” (more like side-grade) your account every year to make sure you don’t over-pay.
That sucks man. This time of year is bad for shops - criminals want their Christmas bonuses too.
No, I heard the gunshots and went for a walk (perhaps stupidly) to find out what had happened. I’m at home now.
Yeah, it seems they tried to rob a jewellery store.
Hey lurkers … so here’s an odd question. With my PC arriving next week, do I have to worry about the power here in the UK at all? I know the voltage is the same as SA but afaik, the amp there is 15v and here it’s 6v, is that gonna matter for the PSU?
/random question on a Sunday
Yeah should not have a problem unless your computer draws more than the 6 amps.
What do they mean that only cool ideas and google DNS work? Cool ideas is the default DNS, which doesn’t work. I’ve googled the google DNS of 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and added it into my router DHCP, even though the WAN pppoe gets the cool ideas dns.
I think they phrased that confusingly. What they meant is that all other DNS servers are blocked.
So if you are using anything other than Cool Ideas, Cloudflare, or Google, you will have no hope of getting domain name resolution.
But if international traffic on Cool Ideas is down (which seems to be the case during a DDoS), then it doesn’t matter what your DNS settings are… no international services will work.
Are you on Openserve by any chance? There may be a temporary solution if you’re on Openserve.
check your router - enable firewall, and DoS protection.
change your DNS on the router to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
All I still need to do is the DOS protection.
It has made a difference - less down time, just slower loading
I am just not sure what to select on this screen
