Today is: International Dot Day
Established to celebrate creativity, courage, and collaboration, the celebration is easily one of the most fun days of the year! Celebrated by both children and adults, International Dot Day is a day to connect, collaborate, and create. It’s also a great day to foster self-expression.
Just make a mark and see where it takes you - Peter H. Reynolds
Motivated with the hope to inspire adults and children to get involved with creative activities and pursuits, Dot Day offers a reason for people to stop limiting themselves and just open up their minds and imaginations!
International Dot Day is staged to encourage people of all ages to harness their creativity. The inspiration behind the event is the children’s book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The story behind this book relates the tale of a teacher who challenges one of his female pupils, Vashti (who thinks she cannot draw), to take courage in her abilities. As the story progresses, from a simple dot on a page, the youngster goes on to make her mark.
Published in 2003 by Candlewick Press in the United States, The Dot has now been translated into at least twenty languages and read by delighted children and adults in various countries all over the world.
Real-life teacher Terry Shay brought this book to his class in the late 2000s and it was this small gesture that sparked Dot Day to life. Since then, this day has grown from just one classroom to become a worldwide celebration each year. This is just one example that shows how a simple act can be like a spark that spreads joy and delight to people everywhere!
Don’t be a square today! Get dotty with it!

Today is: World Ozone Day
The ozone layer protects the Earth from the sun’s harmful rays. It is essentially a fragile shield of gas. Because of this, it plays a massive role in helping to preserve life on our planet.
This special day is held on September 16th to mark the day back in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol was signed. World Ozone Day has been celebrated since 1994 and was established by the United Nations General Assembly. The day is mainly intended to spread awareness of the depletion of the Ozone Layer and search for solutions to preserve it.
Officially, the day is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
World Ozone Day is important because it is a day that is used for spreading awareness regarding the Ozone Layer’s depletion, as well as the search for solutions in order to preserve it. The ozone layer is a piece of the atmosphere that has high ozone concentrations. Ozone is a gas that is made of three oxygen atoms.
Depending on where the ozone layer is, it can either harm life or protect life on Earth. Most of the ozone stays within the stratosphere whereby it acts as a shield, protecting the surface of the Earth from the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun. If this shield was to weaken, we would all be more susceptible to impaired immune systems, cataracts, and skin cancer.
The ozone can be a harmful pollutant that causes damages to plants and lung tissue if it is closer to the Earth than the troposphere, though, which is an atmospheric layer from the surface up to approximately ten km. This shows why the ozone layer is so important, and it is critical to manage it effectively.
There is a hole in the ozone layer that enables big quantities of ultraviolet light to enter and it is situated on the poles, which is on the Arctic Ocean and the Antarctic continent, being especially big throughout the spring of both hemispheres, causing extended summer seasons.
Despite the fact that it is caused because of natural fluctuations, it can also be caused by activities that we all engage in as humans, which emit gases that end up in the stratosphere, degrading the ozone molecules, as well as enhancing the impact and size of the hole in the ozone layer. This is a health issue and environmental problem, as excess solar radiation is a threat to any type of life.
Did you know that there are a number of different things that we can do in order to protect the ozone layer?
Some examples include minimizing the use of vehicles. The best transport option is walking or taking a bicycle. If you need to use a vehicle to get to a destination, why not try to carpool with other people in order to lower the use of cars to save money and pollute less?
You can also avoid the use of cleaning items that are harmful to both us and the environment. A lot of people do not realize that a lot of the cleaning products on the market today contain substances that are corrosive and solvents too, yet these dangerous substances can be replaced with products that are not toxic, such as bicarbonate or vinegar.
There are a number of other things that you can do in order to protect the ozone layer. This includes buying local products. By doing this, you not only get fresh produce but you are going to make sure that you do not consume food that has traveled a long distance. After all, the greater distance that it has traveled, the more nitrous oxide is produced because of the medium that is used for transporting the product. You should also try to stop consuming gases that are dangerous to the ozone layer because of their manufacturing process or content. Some of the most dangerous gases in this regard are nitrous oxide, methyl bromide, halogenated hydrocarbon, and CFCs - chlorofluorocarbons.
Be ozone aware today, and make it a great one!

Today is: International Country Music Day
Country music is one of the most popular types of music in the world and this special type of music originated in the USA. International Country Music Day was established in the 1950s and is held each year on September 17th. On this special day, country music festivals are held at various venues around the world.
Lovers of country music gather to listen to live music acts while drinking and dancing. Line dancing is popular during International Country Music Day and competitions are often held to determine the best dancers.
International Country Music Day is a day that has been designed so that we can pay tribute to some of the world’s best country artists. Whether you are a huge fan of the genre or not, you are encouraged to listen to some country music on this date. You could even break out the fiddle or banjo and get involved yourself.
Country music, which can sometimes be referred to as country and western, is a form of music that has been popular for many years now. Its roots come from old-time music and blues, as well as a number of different types of American folk music. This includes Tejano, Texas country, New Mexico country, Red Dirt country, Cajun, and Appalachian. Country music tends to consist of both dance tunes and ballads, which have harmonies, folk lyrics, and simple forms.
International Country Music Day has been going strong since 2003. It was created as a day so that fans of country music and country music artists were brought together. The date was chosen because it is also the birthday of Hank Williams, who is one of the most famous and influential country music artists.
Hank Williams was born on the 17th of September in 1923, and he died 29 years later. He is deemed one of the most influential and significant American songwriters and singers of the 20th century. Although he was taken from the world too soon, his impact was undeniable. He recorded 35 singles, with all of them reaching the top ten in the Billboard Country & Western Best Sellers chart. In fact, 11 of them hit the top spot. Many people deem him the King of Country Music.
What better way to celebrate International Country Music Day than to listen to some of his songs? This includes the likes of Your Cheatin’ Heart, Hey, Good Looking, Why Don’t You Love Me, and Lovesick Blues.
This is a vibrant event that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. In order to fully embrace the fun of International Country Music Day, it is important to look the part. Dress to impress in a pair of jeans or denim skirt teamed with a gingham shirt and, of course, a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat to complete the look.
If you are not a massive fan of country music, International Country Music Day is the perfect opportunity for you to find out more about this genre of music.
There are some truly incredible country artists, and with YouTube and music listening apps available today, it is easier than ever before to listen to some of their creations. Some of the best artists to start your country music listening experience with include Merle Haggard, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Dolly Parton. You may want to listen to some of the more modern-day country music stars, such as Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, or Shania Twain.
Swing your partner and do-si-do! Yeehaw, it’s Friday!
Never really been a big country music fan either. Closest I’ve got is an appreciation for Johnny Cash. Blending the line between country and blues always worked for me. That he was prepared to experiment and push the boundaries of country-blues to cover songs like Hurt and Personal Jesus (at a time when Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode were artists very much in my listening life) drew me in too.
The American Recordings are well worth an occasional play through, but there’s a fortune of music in there (I think there’s 6 full albums in the collection) so here’s the other Johnny Cash album that pulled me in - his live recording of a concert done for inmates at the Folsom Prison.
And then this one is my all time favourite country song.
Thanks to watching Yellowstone for getting me addicted.
Music that tells a story always makes me happy
Yeah, I never actually considered Cash to be a country singer, but now that you mention it I can hear it. Listened to him a lot in my life-cycle.
I adore Johnny Cash. Some of the best times of my life are accompanied by some of his songs. I get all nostalgic and teary eyed when hearing some of his songs… Not to mention his cover of “Hurt” from the American Records. I bawl like a baby every time I watch the video.
I find it absolutely fascinating that Cash popularised that song and that most people who have heard it are so surprised when they find out that NIN are the original artists, to a point where people actually argue it.
Trent did a good job with the song, but Cash owned it. He made it his own and the raw emotion he put into his rendition of the song just cannot be beat. The fact that he died not long after the recording makes this his swansong for me.
