Today is: :star: Math 2.0 Day

We’ve had a number of days celebrating numbers already this year (Pi Day comes to mind). And there are a few more still to come (World Maths Day in October and Fibonacci Day in November, for example). But today is a celebration of the marriage of maths and technology, emphasizing the importance of mathematics in the fields of computer sciences and advancing technology. Hence the 2.0 bit.

Math 2.0 Day is a celebration of the blending of technology and mathematics. For many of us, maths wasn’t a favourite subject. We’d spend the entire period staring at the equations and wondering what sort of madman designed these torture chambers on paper.

Ultimately, however, we realized that maths is utterly indispensable in our modern world. If you ever wondered, in those hours in Maths class who uses maths in their day to day careers, just take a wander around some recent MEW work from home and my view at work posts - plenty of evidence of numbers in the work place all over the place here.

Programmers deal with mathematics every day, as it’s the framework upon which all computer operations are formed. Everything from the order of operations to quadratic equations is necessary to make even the simplest program.

image

Scientists are one of the biggest users of mathematics, whether they’re calculating the statistical variance of their data or figuring out how much to add to their chemistry experiment, it’s involved at every step.

One presumes you live in a house, drive a car, or operate a computer? The engineers responsible for designing those things so that they work, and especially in the case of the house, use maths to ensure it doesn’t come crumbling down on your head. Math 2.0 day celebrates all these modern mathematical heroes and more.

image

Mathematics is one of the most important fields in the world today, and just about everything we know and love is built on its back. If you’re one of those that still balks at the thought of using maths for a living, stop by those people who use it every day and thank them for doing the work so you don’t have to.

And if you are one of those numbers nerds using maths in your daily grind to make the world a better place, thank you for your service!

Have a mathematically sound Thursday friends! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Sugar Cookie Day

As Harold took a bite of Bavarian Sugar cookie, he finally felt as if everything was going to be okay. Sometimes, when we lose ourselves in fear and despair, in routine and constancy, in hopelessness and tragedy… there are Bavarian Sugar Cookies.
Zach Helm Stranger Than Fiction

After a bit of a drought, we’ve been having a run of food related days this week for which I make no apology. I’m on diet again, and eating vicariously through these posts.

Sugar cookies are far and away one of the simplest and most delicious cookies to ever be created. They are the hallmark of Christmas, with Santa ostensibly wolfing down tons of them every year in a deluge of milk. They are made to celebrate every occasion and are sold as part of charity drives everywhere. Sugar Cookie Day celebrates this delicious little treat.

Sugar Cookie Day was created to honor the tasty sugar cookie. This is a holiday favorite, and it is very easy to make, which is always a major plus! Most sugar cookies are made with a mixture of sugar, vanilla, eggs, butter, flour, and either baking soda or baking powder. It is an easy recipe to follow, which means that anyone can give it a try, and it’s a good recipe to try if you’ve got children as well.

Fun facts about sugar cookies

  • In 2015, Pillsbury was given the world record for the most biscuits/cookies ice within 60 minutes. They enlisted the help of shoppers at the Mall of America, resulting in 1,169 sugar cookies being decorated.
  • You can create fluffier cookies by using a technique that is known as creaming. When butter and sugar are creamed correctly, you can add air to the cookie dough. This will lighten it and give you more to work with.
  • The first sugar cookies were not known by the name we call them today. There were many different entertaining terms that were used to describe the sweet treats before they became known as sugar cookies.

Sugar Cookie Day finds its origins in the roots of the sugar cookie, which in its turn can be traced back to the 1700s among the Nazarene’s of Pennsylvania. Among those pastoral people, the German Protestants, a simple creation was made that was proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Benjamin Franklin claimed this was beer, but we contest that and say it was clearly the sugar cookie. In those days it was specifically known as the Nazareth Sugar Cookie, as it was the only recipe of its kind.

But like all recipes, it comes from an earlier source known as the “jumble”, a biscuit that was equally popular and had an unusual trait. This biscuit was unleavened and thus could be stored for many months after it was dried.

As time went on Pennsylvania adopted the Nazarene Sugar Cookie as the official cookie of the Commonwealth, not just as a resolution, but as a full House Bill. House Bill 1892 to be precise. Since its creation, the sugar cookie has been served in the name of every celebration that comes across the table.

If you have children, sugar cookie making, baking, and decorating is great fun. You can purchase some cookie cutters so that you can create the sugar cookies in lots of different and exciting shapes. You can then decorate the cookies with different colored icing and sprinkles. This is a great way to spend some special time with your children and to have a lot of fun together.

Here’s You Suck at Cooking to show us how easy it is to make Sugar Cookies:

If that doesn’t work for you, pick any one of the many online recipes for your sugar cookies, and get your bake on! Your family will thank you.

Make it a most delicious day! Happy Friday! :+1::grinning:

Some of those sugar cookie pics look great! So fluffy!

My mom’s recipe was more like YSAC’s, and don’t tell her this, but they never really appealed to me. They tasted as flat as they looked. Maybe she wasn’t creaming properly

Also, bonus points for linking YSAC!

Today is: :star: Teddy Bear Picnic Day :teddy_bear:

It’s a wonderful day for a (socially distant) stroll in the woods (your garden)! Grab a favourite stuffed toy, a basket full of goodies, and set off for Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day!

When it comes to interesting reasons to celebrate, this is certainly one of the most unique days! This day was created based on the popular song of the same name, “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic”. The song is a classic one, written to the tune of a song composed in 1907 by American John W. Bratton. The lyrics were added later, in 1930, by Jimmy Kennedy, a British songwriter.

Since the song became so popular, the day has evolved and is now celebrated by families in countries all over the world, enjoying the simple pleasure of a picnic with their favorite stuffed beings.

You know the song. We all know the song. You started singing the song has soon as you read the title of today’s post.

If you go down in the woods today
You’re sure of a big surprise
If you go down in the woods today
*You’d better go in disguise! *
For every bear that ever there was will gather there for certain
Because today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic!

The celebration around this day hardly has any rules at all. It’s simply meant to be a day for families to enjoy each other, their stuffed animals and, if possible, a picnic! Try these ideas for celebrating Teddy Bear Picnic Day:

Host a Teddy Bear Picnic
Why not arrange an outing with friends and family, and to enjoy the summer sun, fun and games, and creativity with some favourite toys? If the weather holds, then plan to have a picnic outside. If it doesn’t? No problem! Just have an indoor picnic by spreading a brightly colored tablecloth on the floor and laying out a yummy spread of foods. Don’t forget to include teddy bears and other fluffy animal friends!

Listen to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic Song
Many different popular artists over the years have recorded versions of this song that have been enjoyed by children and adults alike.

  • Henry Hall (1932). The first known recording of the song just after the lyrics were written. It was recorded by the BBC and was of particularly high quality.
  • Bing Crosby (1950). One of the most famous crooners of his time (and beyond), Crosby recorded this classic song a few years before his popular film White Christmas was released.
  • Anne Murray (1977). This popular recording by the Canadian singer, songwriter has been beloved by millions of children and adults over the years.

Learn the History of Teddy Bears
Those who don’t know the history of this adorable toy may be surprised to find that Teddy Bears have a decidedly political story behind them.

The story goes that the name came from a political cartoon about game-hunting US President Theodore Roosevelt. During a hunting trip in 1902, the president refused to shoot a bear that someone had tied to a tree, saying that shooting it would be unsportsmanlike. So the story went around about “Teddy’s Bear”.

From there, a shop owner decided to make and sell bears with the name Teddy Bear, which caught on and has now become part of American culture and tradition. A few years later the song, The Teddy Bears’ Picnic, was written and the day developed into a fun celebration for all!

Here’s a blast from the past of South African entertainment: Carike Keuzenkamp rocking that song:

Go down to the woods! Go in disguise! Because today’s the day the teddy bears have their picnic! :teddy_bear::+1::grinning:

(Has it ear wormed it’s way in yet? It has, hasn’t it? :grinning:)

You may banish the words from your brain, but I bet you can’t get the melody out of your head:

One last one just in case. (This one especially for @Entity “Doof Doof” to share with KK!)
