Ubisoft disables online services for 90 old games

Without much fanfare (or notice!) and number of Ubisoft titles, including some classics, have lost their online multiplayer services. Online features for some classic titles such as Assassin’s Creed 2, Rainbow Six Vegas and Far Cry 2 are being removed for players with immediate effect.

The short article on the Ubisoft site does not indicate any reasons for the changes:

The online multiplayer services for the titles listed below have now been shut down. The offline features for each game remain available. In-game news and player statistics have also been disabled. For games that used Ubisoft Connect services, Units and Challenges will be disabled, meaning you will no longer be able to earn Units by completing Challenges for the game. Rewards can still be unlocked, however you will not be able to receive them in-game.

Unlockable content (ULC) such as maps and skins will also be disabled, meaning that you will no longer be able to unlock them. On PC, ULC will no longer be available even if it has been redeemed previously. On console, the ULC will continue to be available unless you reset your saved game files.

Here’s a complete list of all of the games impacted, and the platforms that lose online services.

Luckily none for me. But the fact that ganes stop working when the publisher decides is just dum and wrong.

Another batch of Ubisoft games are having their online components get the digital axe from 01 September.

Closing the online services for some older games allows us to focus our resources on delivering great experiences for players who are playing newer or more popular titles.

The 15 games affected this time around are:

  • Anno 2070
  • Assassin’s Creed 2
  • Assassin’s Creed 3
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations
  • Driver San Francisco
  • Far Cry 3
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
  • Rayman Legends
  • Silent Hunter 5
  • Space Junkies
  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist
  • ZombiU

Now this round I take personally. Admittedly it’s been ages since I played some 2070 multiplayer but the fact that I’ll no longer have that chance sucks. It’s worse for Blacklist as that was great to play coop.

I understand that they can’t keep the servers up for the 10 people still playing the games but then they should at least release a patch or something so that you can play peer to peer. I guess this is the problem with games built around DRM functions. The fact that people lose access to the DLC is rather unacceptable, legal of course because it was contained in the licence agreement that is too long to possibly to read.

But Ubisoft Mainz, the studio behind the city-sim strategy game Anno 2070(opens in new tab)—which is also on the list of games losing online support—isn’t letting it go without a fight.

“After an initial investigation, we have decided to dedicate some of our development resources to work on upgrading Anno 2070’s aged online services infrastructure to a new system, so that these features can continue to be used past the mentioned date,” the studio said in an update(opens in new tab) posted shortly after Ubisoft’s shutdown announcement. “However, we cannot yet guarantee that we’ll be able to successfully upgrade/replace the old services as we’d like to.”

One word: DRM

Ubisoft’s view of 90% of PC gamers being dirty pirates has meant that they’ve always gone for the most stringent and overboard DRM practices. Now the legitimate owners are going to suffer since Ubi don’t want to keep hosting the DRM servers. Maybe like with Anno 2070 the devs will try step in and patch the games to work without DRM so people can still play them. Or maybe everyone should just pirate a copy that they can keep :man_shrugging:
