I finished high school, did 2 years of National Service and started my first job working at the Carlton Hotel in downtown Joburg during this era of South African “protest” music. Listening to this over the weekend brought back a flood of memories, good and bad. Bernoldus Niemand, Koos Kombuis, the Voelvry tours, the Cherry-Faced Lurchers, the Concerts in the Park, James Phillips, Jamison’s on Commissioner Street, Bright Blue, Kippies at the Market, the Dogbox in Braamfontein. It was an amazing time to be around.
