And it is indeed awesome! We’re going to have some lekker dices
Sooooo looking forward to it, gents!
I see Bertus stuck me in the MERC AMG!!! I hope thats his idea of a joke!
Did you let him know
Yip, I did. No ways am I in the Merc again!
I can’t really find any better place to have this discussion and this seems to be the most relevant (we have a lot of racing league and sim related threads).
I have had my eyes on ACC for some time now (currently 60% off) and as much as I love Assetto Corsa, obviously I would love to get the newer and updated version. Some questions or concerns I have, considering I play on Xbox and don’t have a sim rig:
- How much of a single-player experience is there?
- Are the AI counterparts competitive or challenging?
- Is there enough to get by with the base game?
- How necessary is the DLC packs?
- How playable is this with a controller?
I love sim racing as much as the next person, and I traditionally play them with AI or alone with time trials. I’m never really one for multiplayer as my life is too chaotic to fit it into my schedule.
Your thoughts and concerns would be appreciated.
About as much as Project Cars series. You have a career, and you do progressively more difficult AI races. In terms of Assetto Corsa, better the glorified list of challenges they have in there.
The game itself is challenging. The force feedback is not the same from Assetto Corsa. And the cars are less forgiving on and over the limit. That said, all GT3 and 99% of GT4 cars come with ABS, and Traction control. You are meant to turn them on, as that is how it is in real life. Never turn them off, this isn’t AC, it’s ACC.
There’s a subjective question. The GT4 Pack DLC cars, which have less downforce, which make them more slidey. For the uninitiated, this most of the time amounts to lower power less downforce versions of the existing GT3 cars. There’s a 2020 GT World Challenge Pack. They drive faster, they are faster, but to my knowledge, only cos they’re just improved braking, aero and overall race car packages. I wouldn’t count them as essential, especially since you’re dipping your toes. I would say, get the DLC tracks (Intercontinental GT Pack and British GT Pack). More tracks, more options, more better.
I have tested it on a gamepad, eons ago. It was driveable back then. There are also quite a few gamepad drivers at MNR (Monday Night Racing), so clearly it’s good enough to do casual multiplayer.
I think that was fairly objective and unbiased. What follows is not.
A note on where you’re coming from. This is not Assetto Corsa. This is Assetto Corsa Competizione. Kunos’ attempt at a purpose built sim racing game for competition, based mostly on the GT3 class. GT3 cars are supposed to be easy to drive, because they have plenty of driver aids, that are in fact used in real life. Assetto Corsa’s force feedback is not the same as Assetto Corsa Competizione’s. AC mimics g-forces in the wheel, ACC doesn’t. That means, it’s a more visually demanding sim from the drivers perspective. You need to pay more attention to what’s going on, on the screen, to figure out how the car is behaving. In AC, you can rely more on wheel FFB, to supplement that incoming information to your brain, to interpret wtf, it’s about to slide
The game has very positive reviews on steam, and that’s cos it’s great. Possibly the best all round competitive sim racing package of a game out at the moment, where graphics, physics, modelling, sound and device support is concerned.
Lastly, this sim shines in multiplayer. It was built for that, and I think manages to put it’s best foot forward in that environment. If you do get the base game, there are plenty online public lobbies now, as it has become very popular, and you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to find a game. There are also daily’s for websites like https://daily.thesimgrid.com/, where you can sign up just before a race, arrive and drive. But the best part is, there are populated races most times of the day from the afternoon, till pass midnight. My point, it could still fit into your chaotic schedule, because it’s not a long term commitment.
@aldyr said it all, except that ACC has the best sound in a racing game ever.
I also went on the internet and found this: Beginners Guide to Assetto Corsa Competizione | Coach Dave Academy
which might come in handy.
Woah… thank you so much for your thorough input, much appreciated.
It’s not to say that I am new to sim racing, I love the genre and have/play many games in the genre. I get what you’re saying though and appreciate the concern. I have done some investigation enough to know that it is a more focused game on a specific specialisation or group. I appreciate your further input on this. In fact, in most games I play I love taking GT cars out as they are one of my favourite groups.
Yeah, I’m most of these types of games I don’t particularly like to play around with the ECU and prefer a more “factory” feel, the way the car was intended to be driven. That being said, I need traction control on an F1 car
Thanks, I’ll have look at additional track DLC when on specials.
Thanks for your input there, this is the type of experience I was hoping to gauge. Like I hated played Project Cars on console as the translation to gamepad was terrible.
Thank you again for the thorough response, it is much appreciated. We need to offer a reputation system in these forums.
I can hope that something like this carries over to consoles too, though I don’t see that possible.
It is something that I have already fallen in love with and I don’t even have the game
That’s a great resource, thanks for sharing.
Speaking of which, I see thesimgrid.com has a 25min Spa race on the hour today. Anyone want to jump on one with me tonight? Say at 20:00?
I would have wanted to say yes but we are doing Raceface tonight. At Oulton Park!!! Terrible idea. That track is way too narrow!
Also, @aldyr sums up ACC pretty nicely. I have never played the single player past the first race at Zolder, and the AI can be quite tough, and perfect to give you a chance to practise some racecraft.
ACC is a great game, and other than Gran Turismo 2, probably the game I have have spent the most hours in.
On the topic of FFB with a wheel: it is hard to translate movement of a whole car through just a wheel, so a lot of the “feeling” of driving a real car is lost. Many call it “seat of your pants” feeling.
iRacing has similarly bad FFB, but an app called IRFFB uses car telemetry and improves the FFB dramatically. Now it is being ported to ACC as well and has a lot of potential to make FFB more useful to squeeze out better lap times.
GamerMuscle talks about it here:
Sidenote, and bound to cause friction, the Bentley is the best car…
A pimp needs a place to put his bubbly and
Then come jump on Spa, much wider
I’ll get on discord to say hi when I go to Belgium.
Those are not hoes…
You got it, and that’s all that matters
Wow… I have a hard enough time taking a GSKR around that track.
His response is fantastic to say the least. I really think I’ve made my mind up to get it, just have to pull the trigger I suppose.
Also, this gents video is just golden and aided in getting me sold.
I only discovered Jardier a couple of weeks ago, but his happy demeanour just keeps pulling me back to his channel. Pure gold, that guy.
Definitely!
I was just looking at this one as I have a One X and plan on getting a Series X.
I think I am very comfortable with a 30fps, be it locked or not, it should be at the very least a minimum.
Very much so, actually a breath of fresh air, wholesome if you like. I personally hate all these PCMR 30 vs 60 fps bollocks and his review was very objective.
