Coronavirus - COVID-19

That’s the argument I make.

In times like these explicit, unambiguous language is crucial.

But in general, people have to be more specific when they talk about midnight.

My suggestions:

  • When speaking, since midnight is the dividing line between days, say “midnight on Thursday/Friday”.
  • When writing, avoid using 00h00 or 24h00 entirely. Rather write (like you had), “after 23h59 on Thursday, 26 March 2020”.

Also @Wyvern that list you posted could have sounded reasonable but the problem with it was that it had no official government logos on it or anything like that.

Exactly why I asked a friend - I try to verify info like that

@SIGSTART I do have a document sent out by the DA ward Councilors. With a lot of the info

So apparently we have to keep on working as normal because of the contract the company has with the hospital. The sites at malls will be closed but we have to be here. We’ll see what happens though as none of us are happy about this and we feel we just won’t show up.

India to go into full lockdown within 4 hours. 1.3 billion people. Indian Prime Minister Modi made the announcement on national television giving people just 4 hours notice in an effort to avoid an Italian style exodus out of hot spot areas.

And a collection of online courses that may be useful for those without kids or parents wanting to keep themselves mentally sharp as well:

It says “Free” courses, but like everything in life there’s a lot of fine print. Most are free, but require payment for certification or testing of the course. Some are completely free.

That’s pretty cool, considering the lockdown ends on the last day of Passover, April 16th

So, being in construction we are pretty useless working from home. Unless I do some DIY.

We also deal a lot with low income, unskilled labour. Luckily everyone with decision making powers are pretty decent people. We will be paying labour subcontractors for the 3 weeks that there will be no work. However, rather than paying the subbie we will be paying his staff directly. The idea is to support those who need it most, and not enrich their bosses.

Unfortunately a few tenders we had our eyes on has been withdrawn so we cannot even work on those in the lockdown.

Finally, one of our clients in Jhb went to Switzerland on a family holiday 2 weeks ago. His son tested positive and he himself tested negative. But how silly is it travelling on holidays at this time?

As the Principal Agent / Architect on a fair few projects, the amount of calls we have received about this - some of the people are going nuts.
Hopefully we will not be stuck for more than 3 weeks

I have no idea what’s gonna happen with my work situation. I work at a Hospital but I work for the parking company and I am not security, there is a separate security company.

My job is basically sitting in a small office for 8 hours doing mostly nothing and only helping people when they have issues getting in or out of the parking lot. If there is something wrong with the equipment I call a technician to come have a look. Now it seems they are arguing that as we are at the hospital we form part of the essential team, but I completely disagree. They can just open the booms and people can enter and leave the hospital freely, but that would mean they lose money. The only time the hospital is even busy at the moment is during the (shortened) visiting times and that’s only for 30 minutes. Even then I’m not actually needed/doing much of anything.

Now the one dude that works with me has apparently agreed to work, but I don’t see him managing 16 hours a day for 21 days straight. I’ve only been with company for like 2 months so I don’t have any leave that I can tell them to take so I can stay at home during lockdown. I know my other colleague is also not happy but I’m not sure what he’s going to do either.

It’s not that I don’t want to work, I need the money, but I don’t feel comfortable under the circumstances. I don’t have my own transport so my mother, who is 65, gives me lifts to and from work and that already means her driving at 22:00 and now with this outbreaks it’s even worse.

Oh boy. I live in an estate, and the local WhatsApp group is full of people looking for loopholes to get out and about because 3 weeks at home is just too much of an inconvenience…

We are fighting 2 major diseases on 2 fronts: COVID-19 and stupidity…

Hahaha jirre, ours has already warned people if they are caught doing anything illegal they will send out our Welgemoed Safe team to collect you and take you home. So far they have determined they are allowed to take the dogs for a walk and now am working out a schedule so that everyone is not on the streets at the same time and you have to walk a predetermined route.

Our body coporate have taken governance and policing into their own hands. They say from Friday there will not be any movement allowed within our complex, anyone seen/caught outside of their homes/apartments will be spot-fined R500. If people attempt to walk out of the complex, security is instructed to turn them back to thei homes.

It’s ridiculous. If i want to go for a walk, alone or with my family I’ll go. This doesn’t mean we must socialise or engage with others and in that regard we are being responsible.

So far the official stance is you can got for walks - https://businesstech.co.za/news/government/384585/yes-you-can-walk-your-dog-and-go-for-a-jog-during-lockdown-minister/

I am waiting for confirmation

exactly, no curfew has been put into effect (yet). It is a virus spread by contact, not airborn (yet). I will go for walks with my family, whome I am in lockdown with. I don’t see the issue with that. Just like anyone else. Be responsible of course and take the necessary precautions, don’t be an idiot about and have mass gatherings etc.
