Hahaha People are apparently going mental

Completely bonkers.

I feel everyone should just ignore government now.

hahaha… doesn’t really phase me to be honest. I hardly consume alcohol. What does shock me though is the lengths that people go to in order to get their “fix” when under these restrictions.

Reference to Prohibition in America. Those that can get what they want. One of our suppliers know of a guy with ANC links that made R400000 during the last lockdown because he knew it would happen and bought up stock.

So yeah, we’re screwed. Almost two months into our vaccine rollout and we’ve administered an average of under 8 000 vaccines per day. On that basis, it will take more than 10 years to cover 75% of the population!

Comparatively:

Stats from Bloombergs’ Global Vaccine Tracker:

Another complete and utter failure by our government. We should be getting daily updates on the number of vaccines that have been secured by the country, the number that have been delivered, and the number that have been administered. And we should be getting that information down to the same provisional and regional level of granularity that we have the COVID-19 stats. At the moment, there’s a single line the bottom of the daily media releases from the DoH: “The number of healthcare workers vaccinated so far is 272 438…”

Actually, based on the number taken from yesterday’s DoH media briefing (272 438) and using 17 February as the start of our vaccine rollout (the day Cyril got his shot) the daily average is just 5 560 vaccinations.

@Avatar, has your wife received the vaccine yet? Anyone else with family or friends in healthcare that have?

No argument from me on that point.

I would add that this is also a global failure as a consequence of humans’ natural tribalism.

We look out for “me and mine” first, so now we’re in a situation where wealthy / affluent nations have enough vaccines to service every adult in their countries while the rest of the world don’t have enough for their elderly and essential workers.

As I understand it, this is a huge problem because the vaccine doesn’t give you immunity forever. If some of the world is left unvaccinated and the virus left to burn through the population it will just continue mutating / adapting until we have another “South Africa / U.K variant” situation, causing already vaccinated countries to lock down again while vaccines are adapted and rolled out.

So unless the whole world can be vaccinated and the teeth be removed from this thing, we’re in for constant, wack-a-mole lockdowns.

Unless the nations of the world can sort out their nonsense and ensure some kind of sensible global roll-out of vaccines, there will never be a return to normal travel, tourism, business, education, and socialisation.

In terms of just us down here at the end of the world, we’ll be better off than most, I suspect. We’ll get vaccines throughout the year and eventually everyone who wants one will be able to get one.

But that doesn’t solve the problem of some (vaccinated!) traveller from an under-vaccinated country coming in with some new variant and causing a whole new outbreak.

She got her jab on 22 Feb, her 5G reception is excellent.

We don’t really have enough data yet to say that. The mRNA vaccine works by teaching your body what the virus looks like and, as far as I understand, there’s no real reason for that to stop working soon. There’s also no real evidence to prove that it will last forever, or any period longer than the observed 6 months or so in trial patients, so science is basically shrugging and saying “I dunno.”

I agree with your criticism of world leaders, though. This epidemic is a very good case for why global bodies like WHO should have a role to play

It pains me to defend government, but in this case the South African strain has to take its portion of the blame. My wife’s vaccine was delayed by 3-4 weeks because the AZ vaccine was not verified as effective against our homegrown strain. It made the DoH have to replan the whole operation at number 99, which is a monumental effort. I agree, though, that the feedback is terribly lacking.

One of my developers’ wife is a doctor doing her training years. She received her vaccination around 3 weeks ago.

Remember that Razer Project Hazel mask concept from a few months back? (See here if you don’t.) Well, it seems to have moved out of concept and into reality:

Meanwhile, Will.i.am has beaten Razer to market with his Xupermask, featuring dual three-speed fans, HEPA filters, Bluetooth connectivity, LED day glow lights, noise canceling audio and microphone capabilities, seven hours of battery life and a magnetic earbud docking system…

The mask dropped earlier today on its website, Xupermask.com and is already sold out!

I see a lot of communication in my email from Discovery on how, when and where to register for vaccinations and how the process is moving along.

Has anyone registered for the vaccination and what are your feelings around getting vaccinated?

Im all for getting the vaccine, my parents both feel like we are the guinea pigs and they don’t want it at all.

I still have to register. Actually want to do so as soon as possible. Both my parents registered but my mother in law thinks the vaccine is killing people. Sigh.
