Coronavirus - COVID-19

Hand sanitizers maybe… Not TP… its not like people are crapping more. The hoarders just won’t have to buy for the next two years

I wonder if more people are going to start Prepping,

Some here may know of (or have participated in?) the UC Berkeley SETI@home project which uses the dormant computational power of PCs all over the world to aid in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence? The SETI@home project is about to go into hibernation at the end of the month.

On March 31, the volunteer computing part of SETI@home will stop distributing work and will go into hibernation.
We’re doing this for two reasons:

  1. Scientifically, we’re at the point of diminishing returns; basically, we’ve analyzed all the data we need for now.
  2. It’s a lot of work for us to manage the distributed processing of data. We need to focus on completing the back-end analysis of the results we already have, and writing this up in a scientific journal paper.

Meanwhile, Stanford University has been running a similar project since 2018 called Folding@home (often referred to as FAH or simply F@h) but with a focus on using idle PC power to aid in disease research through the study of protein folding:

Folding@home is a distributed computing project for disease research that simulates protein folding, computational drug design, and other types of molecular dynamics. The project uses the idle processing resources of personal computers owned by volunteers who have installed the software on their systems.

The Folding@home project (FAH) is dedicated to understanding protein folding, the diseases that result from protein misfolding and aggregation, and novel computational ways to develop new drugs in general.

You can read more about protein folding and the diseases and conditions (such has Hepatitis, Alzheimer’s, Ebola, Breast cancer) that the FAH project has been aiding here.

Recently, the FAH project has turned its attention to aid in the hunt and development of Covid-19 treatments.

TL;DR: We’re simulating the dynamics of COVID-19 proteins to hunt for new therapeutic opportunities.

If you’d like to donate some of your PCs idle time to the project, visit the Start Folding page, download the small (30MB) installer and run it.

https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/

If you do install the client you can choose to run it anonymously or as part of a team (with a user name). If you choose the latter, please join the Most Epic Win Folders team (243014). You’ll also need to register for a Passkey via email, but that’s it.

Once your client is authenticated you can set up your preferences in the Web Control or access Advanced Settings through the tray icon.

They are currently working on an update to the client to specify COVID-19, but for the time being if you select “Any Disease” as your research preference it’ll prioritise the disease for you (but your machine may still get tasks related to other diseases to work on inbetween).

Does anyone know, the countries that are on total shutdown, Italy etc., are people still working/going to work? Suppose a lot are working from home but what about those who can’t. Are they still allowed to go to work?

Lemme ask a friend of mine who is in Italy.

Hospitals, police, fire fighters still have to work.
Governmental employees need to keep working too to some degree and IT too but. Home Office if possible

I have family living in Spain, only pharmacies and Supermarkets are open. Army is on the streets enforcing curfew at night.
Streets are completely dead most the time but everyone seems fairly high sprits though. They are super jonesing to get out ofcourse, everyone lives in little flats.

Man the streets here are even empty.

The best is the gym now. There’s so few people there. I love it.

Hectic. Just wondering what happens if you can’t work from home or work doesn’t give you time off. If government forces you to stay home do you still get paid?

I can image they feeling a bit caged. They must play an open world vr game :grinning:

I’m reading some very sad reports of people losing their jobs. Not like waiters, or other people who work in businesses that require human interaction (though I’m sure that’s coming)… people in startups where funding was suddenly pulled and everyone retrenched.

Folks are saying there’s definitely another global recession on the cards when all this is said and done.

So over the weekend myself and my girlfriend visited her sister. We had a nice long visit spending the whole day with them. She just informed us that one of the children in her class (she is a teacher) tested positive for COVID 19. So while we or her sister or their family is not showing any symptoms, we need to go into self isolation.

Hectic. All the best, Hammer-Man. May you all remain symptom-free. Keep us all updated?
