The big scary for me is Greece at night. I’ve slid off that location in broad daylight.
I’m excited, I haven’t had a serious Dirt session in almost a year. Now that I can run medium settings at a constantly 90fps in VR, it should be
My 1070 would switch between 45 and 90 on super low settings, and there’s always a weird speed ramp up during the switch which completely threw me off all the time.
Don’t get me wong, I’m all for the challenge but I just tend to get tunnel vision from staring into the abyss.
Stare too intently and the abyss will stare back at you
That went as badly as I expected it to. Hardcore Damage is no joke - do not do what I did and approach this event in the same way I’ve done all the others. Slow and steady will get you home safely. Remember, no Service Stops to make repairs or change tyres - once you start, you’re on your own.
How it started (on a practice run):
(Will grab a “how it’s going” pic at the Stage 2 start).
Front right puncture in Sector 2 of Stage 1. Car is pretty much unsteerable. With over 6 sectors still to go, I take the penalty and change the tyre. Mid-way through Sector 3 I clip a barrier and… puncture #2. This time it’s the left rear. Only had the one spare. Keep going. Spin out regularly. The sound of the rim on the road surface is painful to listen too.
Spin heavily into a cliff wall early in Sector 6. Left headlight and my bonnet mounted light bar are gone. As I start rolling again, the temperature warning light comes on. Guess I damaged the radiator in the spin as well. I keep going. We’re well into the “snow and ice start here” section. I’m clenching my teeth so hard my jaw has started to ache.
My only solace, because no-one else has run yet, is that I’m seeing green sectors on my HUD. Not something I’m used to. Just as I spy Sector 7 turn green, my good buddy Phil chirps up from the co-driver’s seat: “The engine light’s come on! Take it easy!” At first I think he’s just winding me up. I mean, I’m going 40kph as it is. Any easier and he may as well get out and walk. Such a kidder, that Phil.
Then I look down at the instruments and yes, the engine warning light is searing its bright hellfire light into my eyes. I manage to scrape my little Space Star over the line a little under 15 minutes after starting. This is a 7 - 8-minute stage in Time Trial conditions.
Then it was dinner time, so I quit. Cannot see myself doing much more than that. Doubt the car will even make it much further. Good luck to you all!
Nice of you to do the recce run before we enter the gauntlet, ahaha. I will watch out for bodywork and dislodged headlights on my way up the mountain.
Sounds like packing an extra tire might be the way to go.
That was surprisingly kak
I did warn you Congrats on being the one to brace the challenge and conquer it!
Damn dude. It’s like playing pinball. First stage down and 2 tire replacements.
Oh good! I’m actually decent at pinball. I have a tendency to tilt though
“Snow starts now”
What was I driving in all along?!
Whew, I just did the first two stages. It’s wild, but I like it! The variation in handling throughout is stressful, but fun.
I had one of the most pathetic wipeouts in practice. At low speed, a small snowbank at the edge of the track caused my car to rest on its side. Terminal damage. Talk about getting the cold shoulder.
Ahh I missed this game. 4 Green sectors, that’s as good as a win!
I almost rolled at one point, but made it with most of my lights in tact and two perfectly good spares in the boot.
This is what I imagine my wheels look like
I have club blur. Can’t remember happened in this one. I do think there was a trick to it…
I finished up last night, appropriate, considering they’re night stages. I still had my lights in tack, went through both my spares and ended on a bit of smoke machine. Not sure what was cooking but there was definitely something wrong with the engine, or so I was told.
Overall, I am happy with my result. The handling difference was quite refreshing but damn the tires take a beating.
Nicely done! A fair few over the line already. For others wanting to test their mettle, remember that these four events run for only one week. You have until midnight tomorrow to get your times in. Sunday we head to Spain.
My only “complaint” of this series thus far is that you could have included a short stage here or there. Something to take the edge off
Otherwise enjoying the challenge.
The first Nightmare has been conquered.
@Boogey with the Skoda win, @aldyr in his Pug 208 just 37 seconds off the win, and @SlinX with a welcome return to MEWRL in a Citroen in P3.
Solid showings from P4 @LazyDemoni and P5 @the9avenger9, but @Beo, @WarRack101, and myself might need to get our night vision googles charged up before Round 2…
Second time around introduces a little Pain in Spain:
It’s going to be fast and somewhat furious. Forward and Reverse runs on the Centenera and De Bellrui stages. No biggie. Mind the barriers!
¡Ve rapido! ¡Ensuciarse!
Oh crap, I forgot about this
Stream it!
