Linux mint

Anyone dabble in the linux?

Getting linux mint for my laptop since I am a bit sick of windows doing what it wants.

mint is good, its essentially an optimised ubuntu distro but i prefer elementary os (great to look at) and just like mint it is based on the long term support releases of ubuntu.

Do you play any games on it?

I tried using Linux Mint many years ago. Hopefully things have improved because back then it was really bad.

Bad as in bad support or just over all?

is it a fast new lappy or an old slow one ? if its newer check out elementary os as well its pretty out the box

no, windows is still the superior os, steam has made big strides with game support on the os but alot of games still hase compatibility issues and i susupect the issues are mainly down to linux gpu drivers thats not as mature as the windows based drivers, and only a few game companies really support linux as in you’ll find square enix games on linux but you wont find ea or activision titles and running games under wine is just downright frustrating imo

Remember trying wine a long time ago and yes that is what I remember just frustrating. I mostly use my laptop now for netflix and youtube and now and again games.

I was an avid Ubuntu user until I switched to MacOS on my work laptop.

Unfortunately many of the games I play the most haven’t been ported to Linux and, I don’t like dual-booting on my “relaxation” machine.

So I keep a VirtualBox around for when I feel like dabbling, but I don’t give nearly as much attention as I would like.

Mint is pretty good. I personally use Debian, which Mint is based off of (seeing as it is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian)

GPU drivers are getting better, but still not perfect.

I had something else to say, but I forget what it was… Maybe it will come to me. But hey, its free to try.

I ran Mint for about 3 years. Loved it. I think I liked it because it was more “windows reminiscent” than just straight up Ubuntu. So it was a nice transition from the Windows ecosystem to Linux. Later on I just moved straight on to Ubuntu. So if you still want that little bit of familiarity, Mint is a good way to go.

Never used mint. I had my mom running ubuntu for a while though.

if you want to get into linux from windows and you want the closest windows like experience use q4os, it is also debian based but much more user friendly for windows user than ubuntu, mint, or elementary (i still prefer elementary purely on aesthetics although its not for power users )

+1 for macOS! I carry around a Macbook Pro and Asus ROG laptop most days and the MBP is always refreshing to boot up and work on.

I love the package management you get in Linux distros, but the combination of a rock solid GUI on top of *NIX just hooked me on MacOS.

It is a great machine for almost all my creative pursuits (writing, coding, recording, editing… just not gaming :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:)

I dunno hey… I played about 80 hours of Diablo 3 on it and a bit of StarCraft 2 as well. Oh, and Guacamelee and Dirt Showdown.

Most used/use Raspbian and Ubuntu MATE which is more for micro PC’s.

Gaming wise, it’s getting better but still sucks in comparison to Windows, Wine is an option but it’s hit and miss most of the time.

Looks like you have to install VLC after the fact…

I need to find a linux distro with an install CD (not DVD) for a Pentium 3 or some ancient machine for a co-worker…

try lubuntu https://lubuntu.net/ q4os will also run on a p3 and the install iso also fit on a cd like lubuntu
