Just one bush then?

Do you want a mild heat, or no heat at all?

Sadly no heat for me, and my mum will never ever again plant chillies in the garden - we haven’t had a plant in years but every summer we take one out that sprouts randomly. … .

I can’t even handle the heat from black pepper anymore

So I ate half of this one

I started with the tail bit while I was deseeding, and it has a nice flavour, but no real heat. Tails are the least hot part usually, and if cut correctly, you can even get heatless cuts off superhots (just enough for a hint of taste).

Ate what was left of the first half, and chewed agressively. Heat built up, but didn’t get uncomfortable. Took a sip of milk though, my tolerance is low.

Also had a nip of aji pineapple, still pretty good. Nice heat. Might dry all the floral one’s and make some powder…

Could be a bird is crappin’ out seeds in your garden. They have no receptors for heat, so that’s how the seeds naturally get around.

You could take a couple seeds from a red pepper from pnp/woolies and plant those. Don’t use green pepper seeds, they’re just unripened coloured peppers. The coloured ones you get in store are picked unripe but get ripened on the way, so they’re still not the best seeds, but they can start getting your thumb green.

Currently we started a veggie garden properly. Cut down the Brazilian pepper tree that was there.

parsley, beans just behind them, and behind that in the ground is peas but they haven’t sprouted yet - the beans came up 2 days after planting the seeds and now that is 5 days growth. In the middle is celery and a couple of kinds of lettuce if they take properly. Then the spring onions and we are considering shallots below that. The next lot is all our spinach that we harvest about every 2 weeks and that gives us enough for 3 people 1 meal :S I want more! Right next to that is the grossest thing around besides the celery, fennel… And there is a little lemon thyme.

My lockdown garden project that I started in June.
I’m a farming noob, be gentle.

Please suggest other veg that I could grow, or some obvious stuff I’m missing. I still need to add supports for some of the plants, a bit late I know!

When can I come to harvest? And do I have to share :stuck_out_tongue:

Dude that looks amazing! We considered a fence but my dad vetoed that option. We still want to add a shade netting.

The biggest thing we learnt is only planting what you guys like to eat otherwise it goes to waste.

And what does Mika think of that?

As long as there are no strawberries, the doggos leave the veg alone. They dig in the middle of the lawn not the dirt. . . .

Thanks!

True, but since this is the first crop, so to speak, I just bought a big seed pack and went wild. It’s more of an experiment to see what grows the best in these conditions.

That is sometimes the best - experiment and take it from there

That’s amazing! Well done  I think maybe your corn is too close together though?

I like your raised bed idea with the sheet metal. What did you do for soil?

If you’re looking for other vegetables, I’m obviously gonna recommend chillies.

BTW, https://www.seedsforafrica.co.za/ has a 20% off for black friday special on right now

Thank you, thank you.

Many things are too close together  but yes, the corn is growing all over each other.

I bought like 10-15 bags of 30dm topsoil, since the ground here is not very suitable for veg, and mixed it with some of the dirt I removed. Soil gets expensive very quickly, I’m actually still short by a few bags.

I’m growing habanero, jalapeno, cayenne and serrano, they’re all just too small to see in any of the pics.

Everything that’s growing here was bought from them, that’s awesome, i’ll take a look!

The thing with stuff being too close is they won’t grow very big since they’ll all be competing for nutrients.

Topsoil? ok, cool. I have been buying potting soil and it just does not do what I need it to do. I’ve tried the two brands found everywhere in my area… I do get used seedling mix from a seedling place nearby which is great though, so I’ll probably just stick with that. I could use several more bags myself.

I’ve got those same peppers (plus another 2 or 3 dozen varieties lol). They take time to grow.

I’m eyeing a few things on seeds for africa, but I really don’t have the money right now :frowning:

We also just added potting soil to the crappy topsoil we have. So far it works for us

I said topsoil when I meant potting soil…
It’s probably a good idea to mix potting soil with whatever you have if you’re planting in the ground, like Wyvern said.
I mean, it’s in the name, potting soil is for pots

So my mix is potting soil + random sandy dirt + fertilizer + bonemeal (only when transplanting or tilling), and that seems to be doing fine.

I don’t really know, but maybe it’s retaining too much water on it’s own or something.

Ya, potting soil in my pots, and mixed into the ground… I just don’t think the local stuff we’ve got is good for peppers…

I prepped a few more beds over the past week, and added composted chicken manure, perlite (for drainage), ground up banana peels and eggshells. I forgot to add bonemeal, but I think I’m out anyways…

I’ve been using seagrow twice a month, and epsom salts or calmag when needed.

I wont lie, we havent done anything fancy like that yet. Will if needs be but so far it seems good, we just have something chowing the bean leaves and ants around the spinach - not sure what to do to get rid of them

Took some shots with a trash camera

Most these plants are stunted, I couldn’t dig very deep. It seems there’s rock underneath in a lot of areas.

These guys tend to give up once they flower… but maybe I just need to fertilize them better…

Ghosts and tobascos peppers

3 kinds of mint, only just planted these

A few new transplants, few new seeds in the ground, and space for 6-9 more plants

Some of these guys are doing all right. Will space them out more next year so they will hopefully get bigger.

A couple pepper plants (not spicy) and herbs in the greenhouse. Don’t trust the monkeys…

More mint, and lemon balm. The shady strip of dirt is spinach I planted on the weekend. We’ll see what happens.
