Iā€™m sitting in meetings all day. Iā€™m not listening really. I set myself up in the corner where no one can see my screen and Iā€™m just hanging out on MEW.

Entertain me mortals.

YEY! How did I miss this?

Hello people

I had an informal interview for a part-time job this morning. I believe it can be great experience for whatever I do in the future, will look good on my CV. Now I just need to decide whether Iā€™ll actually have the time for it.

I also went for an interview this afternoon and how surprised i was to find out how interviews have changed since i last went for one. Back in the day you spoke to someone for 20mins, maybe showed them what projects youā€™ve worked on etc and your hired. (In my case that is)

This afternoon was hecticā€¦ had to write code, SQL queries and solve logic problems etc out on paper while the interviewers where in the room waiting for me to finish. Felt like i was back in high school during exams

Oooh, nice. Although I quite like the MP7ā€¦will have to try out the MP5 and see which one I prefer.

Pretty standard for interviews. At least you didnā€™t do a white-board coding test in front of a panelā€¦ Itā€™s becoming quite common around here as well and stems from the Silicon Valley giants. Thereā€™s a lot of controversy surrounding such ā€œtestsā€ and how valuable they actually are.

We tend to be quite lenient in interviews though. Through the years Iā€™ve learned what to ask and what to look out for in developers when interviewing them without making them feel on edge. The ones Iā€™ve personally interviewed and selected as part of our team have turned out to be the so-called ā€œrockstarā€ developers, on their way to being 10xā€™s. Weā€™re in the process of formalizing this a bit to filter out deadend CVs and to not waste time in interviews.

My dads boss once told him you need all kinds of people in the workplace.
From rockstars to those old ballies that are reliable and know things. The young ones that make mistakes and hopefully learn from their mistakes and want to try new things.

Like the old saying goes if everyone is special nobody is. Also I would probably fail those kind of tests.

Thing is, my clients expect ā€œrockstarsā€ due to our position in the market as a consultancy. The clients donā€™t want to pay school fees when they can just appoint and train someone of their own accord. We train up junior developers internally on difficult projects led by senior team members until theyā€™re ready to represent at a client, but weā€™ve been struggling to keep up recently and our stronger developers have been juggling multiple projects at once, leaving the junior members to fend for themselves a bit.

So yes, in a more tranditional, enterprise environment you can afford a huge range of skills and people contributing more (or less) than others to projects, but in a small firm you have to be able to add value from pretty much day oneā€¦ The reality is youā€™ll probably develop your skills quicker in a more intimate environment due to being involved in more projects, having a lot of responsibility and being exposed to more industries. Thatā€™s my experience the past 4 years anyway.

Morning everyone. Itā€™s FRIDAY!!! Thank goodness.
