Thanks everyone. Yeah, Butchie was a legend, just like his namesake Butch James. He started off as my pet but then stayed on with my folks when I moved into a no pet home. They would totally argue that Butch was theirs 
until any vet bills came up 
Since we moved back to Ballito about 7 years ago he was again a very regular visitor at our house when my folks went away on travels. My fondest memory is when my daughter was like 3 my dad told Butchie to go outside, and my daughter, looking distraught said “But he is my only friend!”
Unfortunately old Butch was losing his mind while his body was still strong. Its one of those really tough decisions when the vet essentially gives you 2 options: set him free or keep him in torture.

We had a terribly traumatic evening yesterday. We got home from being out at dinner for my nephew’s birthday and I let the dogs in from the back yard. The next thing I hear my son screaming for me to come outside. I rushed out and found our 3 month old kitten lying dead on the grass. The dogs must have got hold of her, though there was no blood they must have broken something
We’re all terribly heart broken.

I’m so sorry to hear this 
We’ve been through similar with one of our cats, where a playful dog might’ve just hurt her, or a neighbour’s dog, and we’ve got kittens of the same age now
Hope you and your family recovers well, and I would suggest getting another kitten soonish - they really do help heal the wounds.
