Our female started giving birth to her puppies this morning. Two healthy pups so far but the 3rd is taking it’s time coming, got my wife stressing out so we’re hoping there won’t be major complications

The pup’s have the father’s colouring.

Tell your wife to relax, you will know if mum is in distress, take her for short walks, remember to let her go pee as well. Often the mum needs help with tearing the sack so just keep an eye on that. Did you have a vet visit before to give you an idea how many is expected?

Also I WANT!

I’m sure glad to hear it isn’t the male giving birth!

And might I add…

PUPPIES!!!

I went through a lot of trouble to get another Syrian. You just can’t find them in Mpumalanga. And the odd time they are, it’s with businesses that have horrible conditions and I would really rather not support. This little guy came from very ethical people. They questioned me on cage and wheel sizes and what type of bedding, something most people don’t consider. They think if the pet shop sells something, it must be ok, which is just not the case. I checked a bag of wood shavings to see if it was aspen, and when I turned the bag over, it was 50% dust… D: I can’t believe they sell that crap.

Only reason I wont get one at this point is my doggos - they will definately scare the poor thing to death, they are too loud.

I thought they might eat it.

Ya, they stress out very easily. The dwarf hamsters are a little more resilient though

Oh that is the second concern, but the barking does scare smaller pets to death (we lost budgies this way :P)

Thanks, my wife is a worrier. We took the dog for a short walk outside now and she also drank a lot of water. We have been helping with the tearing of the sack, also have an aspirator to help clear the air passageways.

We did a scan a few weeks back - expected litter is from 7 to 11!

It can take all day so just give her light snacks and water and walks - its all you can really do

So things weren’t going so well so we had to take mother dog, Lexi, to the vet. Vet took a look and did a scan, one the puppies was stuck. To add to this Lexi was completely exhausted from the hours upon hours of labour. Apparently the contractions use up calcium in her body, and she had used up all her reserves.

The best course of action for the mother and remaining puppies was to have a caesarean so…

At least the caesar went well, 7 more puppies bringing the total to 9. Even the one that got stuck, though very weak, is going to make it.

So here’s the latest update on the puppies. It was a sad night last night as the one pup who had been stuck during the labour succumbed to his injuries. We had been keeping a close eye on him and had been feeding him extra with a syringe as he wasn’t latching and feeding well. Lexi had been quite protective over him but then her behaviour changed and she started picking him up and handling him roughly. We took him away since it seemed she was rejecting him. The poor dog was crying like a human baby. He then stopped breathing in my wife’s arms. It was tough…

Thankfully, the rest of the pups are doing well.

Sorry to hear about the traumatic time bud. Hope you, the wife and kids keep strong and keep looking up.

All the best buddy.

Thanks man. The kids seemed to be alright when we told them. We’ve tried not getting too attached to the pups since we won’t be keeping any of them (far too many pets in this house already), but man they still get to you!

This whole thing has been far more of an up and down journey than we’d ever have expected. But it’s been a good day today as things have settled.

At least the pup knew it wasn’t alone.

Trust me the hard part is still coming, finding them homes and then letting them go.

good luck and post lots of pictures

A lot of the potential owners are friends and family at this stage, so that would be quite nice in that we’ll at least see the puppies from time to time. Especially the two my parents are planning on taking. So that will help with the letting go process at least.
