I don’t know about “everyone” coming away amazed - there’s always a handful of the regular naysayers pushing their nonsense, regardless of how good or bad the demo is, or how cringey some of the commentary and game chat is.
I saw one yesterday after the first part of the demo was run implying that CIG were lying about the Carrack being ready by 3.8.x because they clearly haven’t got very far with it because they only showed one room and a corridor and the ship was completely empty and they only showed the shuttle flying and not the ship itself. Needless to say, I didn’t see anything of the sort after the second part of the demo was run.
The whole awkward, janky CitzenCon demo thing is something that I’ve always appreciated. Sure it’s run in a controlled environment, on dedicated equipment and custom build, with a carefully scripted storyline designed to show things off. Sure it’s probably rehearsed 100s of times before by the players.
But when it’s delivered to the public it’s done live and in-engine, warts and all, by a bunch of nerdy geeks who are probably as nervous as hell when they realize there’s hundreds watching their every move in the same room with them, and tens of thousands via a live stream. Not to mention all their bosses.
The fact that it’s not a pre-recorded, super polished mission run, voiced over by a random celebrity makes it so much more genuine, imo.
Agreed. The cringe factor and odd glitch or crash are part of the experience by now. I much prefer the akward nerdy presentation to the slick but sterile corporate show approach. These guys are genuinely excited about their work, and it shows.
The demo reminded me a lot of the kind of demos that Digital Extremes do with Warframe. They only do demos on actual working game code, played live, come what may.
Yeah, in the moment the glitches may be mortifying, but afterward it is both endearing and a testament to trying to be as transparent as possible.
People can criticise Cloud Imperium and Chris Roberts for a lot — I definitely do — but anyone claiming they are peddling vapourware at this point just isn’t paying attention.
So when are we doing this thing? The free fly continues until 5 Dec, so we have time, but it’s best to plan ahead given people’s schedules.
I can possibly spare an hour tonight to run the new folks through some basics. There may be some more time available tomorrow night. Wed-Fri are most likely a no-go. Sat/Sunday should be fine for most of the day, but afternoons / evenings rather than mornings. Next week is still in flux so we’ll get to that later.
What sort of time are you hoping to be on tonight? I’ve still got a truck load of marking that has to be finished today for submission tomorrow morning, but I’m really hoping to be able to get on tonight. If only to have a look around the Expo area. (Also assuming Cool Ideas doesn’t get DDOSed again and my download actually finishes during the day.)
