CIG always make ridiculously good looking teasers and trailers

Aw man! I thought the Invictus trailer was for the Matt Damon rugby game

But this is the perfect time to trial some other small fry space game I guess

Nah. It’s actually for that Matt Damon space game

Does this mean free flying is only for players who already have the game, and you can test drive ships at the in game event?

Going to make this reply fairly detailed because it’s been a while since we last did any Star Citizening, and there may be others who want the info too. But, TLDR for those that don’t: Nope, not all all.

All you need is an account, and a freshly installed copy of the game and launcher. Free Fly events are open to anyone with a Star Citizen account, and you can create an account at any time, without having to buy a game or ship package at the time.

Essentially Free Flyers get a code that gives them access to the in-game Universe for the duration of the Free Fly period (normally a week to ten days). Once you access the Universe in-game a specific set of ships are made available to everyone to use for free during the event. We also only get to find out what ships are available for the Free Fly closer to the time, but usually, it’s generally any recently completed or flight-ready ship and one or two surprises.

If you want to create an account in the meantime though: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/enlist will take you straight to the Enlist page. I strongly recommend you use a Referral Code when you do enlist to score some extra credits if (when?!) you decide to take the plunge and buy into the game yourself. (IIRC, you need to spend a minimum of US$40 to activate the referral bonus, but with the base Starter Packages at $45 should be covered.)

Importantly: You do not have to buy-in or spend anything in order to create an account and play in a Free Fly, BUT the referral code cannot be applied retroactively - you MUST include it at the same time that you create your account. So even if it’s unlikely that you will add a Game Package to your account any time soon, it’s best to include that Referral Code now in order to get the bonuses later.

Pick a Referral Code from the Star Citizen MEW Members list in this threads’ OP, and then let me know your Account info and code to add to the list for others to use.

Once the Free Fly code is released (normal a day before the start of the event) all you need to do is follow the link that will be issued then too, enter the code into the event page while signed in with your account, and the game will allocate the Free Fly event ships to your account. Then launch the game, head to a ship terminal and they should be available to use.

If you’d like to save some time - the unoptimised game files are pretty big - and do a provisional game download beforehand as well, use this link to download the SC Installer: https://install.robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/RSI-Setup-1.4.0.exe, run it and install the current game version (3.9.0 I think). That way, when Free Fly is opened, all you’ll need to do is run the Installer and apply any last minute updates and patches and you should be good to go.

Star Citizen had a community event where people get to vote for their favourite ship.

This year’s winner: Carrack

It beat last year’s winner, the Drake Caterpillar, as well as The Valkyrie on its road to victory.

Cracking good cinematic to introduce the Mercury Star Runner to the universe
and to build lore visually too.

I could happily watch a full machinima series based in the Star Citizen universe.

This is the complete “The Reunion” cinematic short that CIG brought out to celebrate the release of the Mercury Star Runner (a ship that’s frequently referred to as the “Millennium Falcon of Star Citizen”.

If you watch it for what it is intended to be - nothing more than a clichĂ© rich, sci-fi trope spoof and homage to 80s sci-fi movies, especially the original Star Wars trilogy - then it’s a lot of fun. And yes, every single clichĂ©d sci-fi trope you can think of is squeezed into these 9 minutes.

If you watch it and see only all manner of stupid SJW tripe, feminazi, plot armour, and lazy writing nonsense, you probably won’t enjoy it at all.*

Like most (all) of CIG’s promo material, the entire thing has been made in-engine from what I understand.

* Also, you’re probably not so fun at parties and really shouldn’t take things so seriously - it’s a frikken computer game!
