So that old card is now officially in the machine, we have updated both pcs to the dodgy 2004 windows 10, but Nima has found it more stable and a lot of my weird sound issues are sorted out.

Now to see if the reboots still happen or not. If not then I start saving up for a new secondhand gfx card

Ok nope that card is way to old, I can launch borderlands 3 but I am so motionsick from the bad frame rates and everything

Will see what happens tomorrow. I am not expecting any crashes tonight since most of them happen in the morning after the pc was off for a few hours.

The scroll wheel on my irreplaceable mouse (Swiftpoint Z, Kickstarted) seems to be broken.

When I scroll the wheel, it’s like the mouse is trying to scroll up and down at the same time.

Scrolling down is not as broken, but even then the window that I’m trying to scroll will randomly scroll up while I’m trying to scroll down.

Scrolling up is almost completely busted. When I scroll up, the window often scrolls down instead. Mostly nothing happens. Occasionally, it actually scrolls up.

Is this something that can be fixed with cleaning?

Sounds like dust (probably lint), it is not uncommon, cos there’s literally a mouse wheel sized hole for the dust to get in. But only way to be sure, is to open it.

Can’t be as bad as the 2 mice i have with partially broken cables… partiallypartiallyPARTIALLY

That’s the worst.

Woot! A basic clean with rubbing alcohol did the trick. I can once again scroll up and down all of our massive forum topics to my heart’s content.

There was indeed a lot of lint around the wheel and its axis.

Who are you all using for your domain registrations locally? I might need to transfer an .org.za quickly…

I want to avoid 1-grid and Afrihost. It would also be nice if the service provider has cheap VPS’ available…

Thanks

AWS has a cape town region now…

Oh, is it up already? Hmm, maybe for work. Definitely not for my own personal stuff though.

Thanks

I see EC2 (with loadbalancer) and VPC is there. Haven’t tried the local stuff yet though. I imagine it’s pretty much the same experience as any other region.

What kind of VPS do you want? Windows or Linux?

Thanks

Self-managed Linux is what I’m after. Heck, I’d get a full server if I had the cash lol

It doesn’t even have to be local, except for one use case…

Anyone ever tried linode.com?

I use a Windows one by these people:

Don’t know how the prices compare but their support is excellent.

Privately, I use digitalocean, $5 a month for ubuntu LTS. :man_shrugging: AWS for work, but you need an abacus and a PHD in maths to figure out their costing plans.

Thanks, will add it to my list of options.

I’ve used cheap-o OVH ones quite often in the past, but think I need a bit more oomph

Oh yes, I’ve heard of them. That’s not a bad price at all. Also added to my list
Ya, that AWS stuff can be hectic. At least you can set limits, which is great if you don’t have anything mission critical running (afaik)

Ok, so I’m getting fed up with my Xbox controller. I can look up, down and left without issues, but looking right takes forever / stutters (thus using the right joystick). It has been doing this since I can remember so don’t know if the controller broke at some point or if that is just how it has always been.
Anybody have an idea of possible causes (and fixes)?

That has long gone.
