It’s all about managing risk. Employing people internally means the employer takes the risk for the people, while getting a consultant in means the employer only pays for the consultancy fees and accepts the deliverables. Training people internally to get to the professional level that consultants are is a long and expensive process for an employer.

Oh no! Hopefully it’s not an often occurrence in the area you’ve moved into

Makes sense. I suppose as long as I am starting to engage with the wider organisation and start implementing change from the top and being instrumental in doing so. Not to mention the international exposure is a plus for me too.

I suppose it’s not so much about who does it, as long as improvements are being made and change is happening for the better.

Oh no that sucks. Hopefully this is a one-off occurrence unlike the area you moved from…

And this adds to the risk, where you train someone up and then they bugger off to another company.

It’s well established wisdom that a company should focus on their core business only, and get other companies to take care of the rest.

I know what’s going to happen. They are going to finally fix our electricity just before 6 and then loadshedding kicks in. The assholes.

I’ve had so many similar issues. After 25+ hours without power, when it came back on, it tripped the Eskom box because all the geysers went all out. We had to wait for an Eskom tech to come out to unlock it so we could turn it back on (and set our own breakers off, turning them on one every 5-10 minutes to not pull more than we have coming in).

Ya, he showed up just as load shedding started, so we didn’t have any idea if the problem was actually solved.

Thankfully, he left the padlock unlocked.
