There we go. Interesting that they picked Albon over Kvyat; I know they kicked him to the curb way back, but he is vastly more experienced. This is still Albonâs rookie season, for crying out loud. Both he and Gasly could be ruined come yearâs end.
I suspect Max put the Veto on Kvyat.
Its great for Albon, I hope for his sake he is mentally prepared for the pressure.
I feel bad for Gasly, he has talent, but he is in the wrong team to show it
Really interesting read I found on Reddit. All about aero in F1:
The guys at Autosport have some interesting ideas as to why Albon was promoted. Worth a look.
This sentence triggered me: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a program that any engineer who is designing anything that interacts with a gas, a fluid, a solid (or multiple combinations of all three) where at the very least there is some kind of âflowâ problem that simple hand calculations wonât cut it.
PROGRAM THAT WHAT?
I think they meant programme
Yeah, I see it. Thatâs what happens when you write really long, cumbersome sentences that donât get to the point.
Season break review for the teams.
I thought a percentage breakdown would actually be more useful, so here it is:
Team | 2018 | 2019 | Diff | Percentage |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mercedes | 345 | 438 | 93 | 27.0 |
Ferrari | 335 | 288 | -47 | -14.0 |
Red Bull | 223 | 244 | 21 | 9.4 |
McLaren | 52 | 82 | 30 | 57.7 |
Toro Rosso | 28 | 43 | 15 | 53.6 |
Renault | 82 | 39 | -43 | -52.4 |
Alfa Romeo | 18 | 32 | 14 | 77.8 |
Racing Point | 59 | 31 | -28 | -47.5 |
Haas | 66 | 26 | -40 | -60.6 |
Williams | 4 | 1 | -3 | -75.0 |
Alfa Romeo now has Kimi, it looks to have paid off. I do shake my head at Williams, but I think itâs a driver issue. George Russell is completely out of his depth and Robert Kubica is officially a has-been (or never-was in F1)
I donât agree with Russell being out of his depth. He nearly dragged a car that is 3 seconds a lap slower than the leaders into Q2 last time out. Kubica is vastly more experienced, yet Russell has consistently outqualified and outraced him. Remember, he won the F2 championship quite convincingly last year by beating Lando Norris and Alex Albon, and they are both doing just fine in F1. He would have been right up there with them in a better car. The Williams is just that bad, and that isnât Russellâs fault, or Kubicaâs for that matter.
Agreed, the current Williams is absolute garbage. However this is F1 and unless Russell starts doing magic in the Williams and/or gets snapped up by a better team heâll fade into obscurity. Fun fact : In other disciplines he has beaten Albon, LeClerc, Verstappen and Giovinazzi.
I still stand by the statement that heâs out of his depth, itâs his first full season in F1. Very few rookies make a meaningful impact in their first season. Unless youâre Jenson Button, Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna or Lewis Hamilton.
Maybe we have a different understanding of what âout of depthâ means. There have been plenty of rookie drivers that clearly did not have the skill to make it in F1, and got there because of sponsorship money. Russell isnât one of those, in my view. Besides, Mercedes have an eye on him for the future already. Heâs at Williams to gain experience.
Also, your list of star rookies, while undoubtedly impressive on debut, started their careers in cars that were good enough to score results in, sometimes even proven race winning cars. Would Hamilton have done better in this dog than Russell in his rookie year?
Hang on a second; Jenson Button joined Williams that was at that stage a solid middle of the pack team and he started scoring consistent points and podiums. Ayrton Senna joined Toleman (who was in their 4th F1 season ever) and managed to drag a team that had 2 seasons of not even qualifying, and one season of 9+ retirements out of 16 races the previous season to a respectable 7th (also Tolemanâs best ever result in F1) in the constructors championship. Schumacher joined Jordan in their debut F1 season, completed 6 races (3 DNFs) and a 5th place and two 6th places.
It would be very interesting though to see what a fast experienced driver can do in the dog that is the Williams
I think youâll find Schumacher drove one race for Jordan, and then immediately jumped ship to Benetton. You also left out Hamiltonâs multiple race winning MP4-22. Not a bad car to start your career in.
Look, the point is, everyone knows the Williams is miles off the pace, so it wonât be hurting Russellâs prospects too much in his rookie year. If anything, itâs much worse for Kubica, who hasnât performed at anything like the level expected from him. Russell will get his chance in a better team. I fully expect that he will eventually partner Ocon at Mercedes.
Itâs 6
That was intentional, Hamilton has had the easiest start to a F1 than pretty much ANY other driver
Nope, go read up on the story. Schumacher debuted for Jordan in Belgium, and was in the Benetton by Italy, the very next race. Jordan apparently never signed a proper contract with him, and lost the ensuing court case.
