The Formula 1 Thread šŸŽ

This photographer said it best if you ask me. You all know I have always supported Vettel. But also for past two years he was on the edge of leaving.

My gut tells me he wonā€™t be back.

Itā€™s all official now:

ā€œThe team and I have realised that there is no longer a common desire to stay together beyond the end of this seasonā€.

I agree with Ricciardo being the most likely option. I think heā€™ll be a better team mate for Charles. Everyone knows Charles is the No. 1 driver at Ferrari right now, but I believe Ricciardo would be a great second driver, but he would want to win a championship too, so it might end with a Red Bull saga again.

Carlos Sainz had a rocky start in F1, moving between teams. I think the McLaren dynamic suits him, and the entire team culture just works. They also seem to getting their performance issues sorted, so heā€™ll probably stay with them, at least for 2021.

Scenario thisā€¦ Whatā€™s better than an Intalian outfit with an Italian driver? If Mick Schumacher has a good F2 season, theyā€™ll probably give him a seat at Alfa. Heā€™ll have a great mentor in Kimi, if he stays. Giovinazzi had a few great races last year, so he might get the call to be the wingman at Ferrari (ala Rubens Barrichello). He wonā€™t callenge Leclerc for the title, but might just be a thorn in Mercedes and Red Bullā€™s side.

As for Vettelā€¦ He commented multiple times that he enjoys being a father to his 3 kids, so perhaps heā€™ll bow out and enjoy his family life. I donā€™t expect him to be like Kimi and just race because he enjoys it. Either way, he was a revolutionary force in F1, and even though he had a bad few seasons, heā€™ll always be considered one of the greats!

I would hate to see Sainz leave McLaren. I think the team is progressing well and he has obviously had a big part of that new dynamic.

As much as I would love to see Ricciardo back in a car able to win races, I cannot see him being a good 2nd driver. Not everyone is as calm and level headed and rational as Bottas who, in my opinion, is the perfect 2nd driver. Fast as heck, putting the #1 driver under pressure, able to win races, but when the call comes he plays the team game.

I think Giovinazi could actually be the perfect #2 driver to Leclerc. He has some pace on a good day, and I dont think he has too much drive to want to unseat Leclerc. Together they could build a real promising Ferrari legacy.

But ultimately, my vote (not my money) goes to Kimi! After that broadcast of 2018 US Grand Prix I want to see him back in red! But that is most unlikely.

Who thinks Alonso will come back? He has been talking about coming back for a whileā€¦

As much as I like Alonso, I dont want him to come back. I would rather give the seat to someone else. A newbie or anyone. I also agree not Dani Ric, he deserves to be no 1 somewhere, he is good enough, and at Ferrari whoever takes the spot will be no2.

What an interesting situation weā€™re in. Donā€™t need a season for silly season to actually start. For me Vettel should retire for good. Iā€™ve been saying this for a year now. Heā€™s had an unbelievable career and will go down as one of the greatest drivers in the sport. But at the moment his drive and passion just doesnā€™t seem to be there, and would be better if he stood down.

Ferrari is in a very strange predicament then with replacing him. It makes sense for them to try and court Danny Ric or Sainz, who is clearly the only drivers currently on the grid that would make any sort of sense in the Ferrari. Giovinazzi is good, but heā€™s not Ferrari good. No-one else on the grid makes sense to add. George would be great but heā€™s road is paved with the Silver Arrow. Nobody else has any talent to actually take the Ferrari seat and perform well enough.

F2 would be another source of drivers, but the current crop is a bit lackluster in skill and excitement. And then Ferrari will not take a risk on a rookie in their first year in F1.

So I guess itā€™s going to be some interesting news in the next coming weeks or months as Ferrari scrambles to try and fill that vacant seat.

I actually wonā€™t even be mad if the Hulk takes the number 2 spot, he really got screwed. I kinda agree with the points made about Dani and Sainz, as much as I like them. I agree.

Autosport, (and others I guess) now also starting to report the same thing:

Iā€™m honestly a little surprised by the move, but possibly only because I low-key had my heart set on seeing Danny Ric in red. Itā€™s undoubtedly a brilliant move for Carlos, and deservedly so. Also, if the article is correct and Ricciardo moves over to McLaren, I am doubly convinced that Seb will retire rather than slot into the vacant Renault seat. Actually, I wonder if Hulk could be convinced to come back to his old team after they discarded him so unceremoniously? And would he be happy having Ocon - his replacement at Renault - as a teammate?

Its going to be interesting, its not the choice I would make, Sainz is a good choice tho, Dani might make the move just because those Maccaā€™s are hot.

Hulk might come back but I doubt that he would do it cheaply

Hmmm itā€™ll be sad to see Ricciardo go but it was to be expected. Renault F1 kept going on last year about bringing in one of their young drivers. Which is rather dangerous if thatā€™s the case because theyā€™ll sit with two young drivers then.

Copying this from a comment at Reddit though which is interesting:
