Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montreal

“Oh Canada! Our home and native land!”, sing Stroll and Latifi at the start of Sunday’s Grand Prix. The chance of either of them singing it again from the top step of the podium 70 laps later, eh? I’m sorry to say, but that’s ah-boat zero.

Montrealers haven’t seen or heard a Formula 1 car since the 2019 Grand Prix. That was the one that gave us this classic image:

That was the scene in parc fermé after Seb Vettel (in his then Ferrari), who crossed the line first was relegated to P2 after getting a 5 second time penalty for “unsafe re-entry and forcing another driver (Lewis Hamilton specifically) off the track”.

The whole incident is naturally one of F1’s “Top 5 Dramatic Moments” from past Canadian GPs. It, and the start, and later re-start, of the 1998 event, are both equally dramatic.

This time around, it is possible that Seb and Lewis could clash again, but it probably won’t be in a battle for the win.

Just a Sunday Drive Around the Island

From the chaos potential of Turn 1’s acute left-hander into Turn 2’s hairpin right, to the tricky right-left T3-T4 chicane (scene of the Vettel vs Hamilton clash in 2019); from the famous extreme hairpin at Turn 10, and the long back straight leading to the final chicane and the notorious Wall of Champions; CG-V is a challenging and demanding high speed, low downforce circuit that drivers love.

It’s Molson Time!

Montreal is well west of us here, and their clocks run really slowly I guess? They’re six hours behind us, so look forward to weekend action at 20:00, 23:00, 19:00, 22:00, and 20:00…

Race time around the world for the non-Saffer MEWbs:

How’s the Weather Up There Then, eh?

Some heavy overnight rain today, with more rain Friday and Saturday - none of which should clash with F1 activities. Raceday is looking crisp and clear though.

Apparently Seb was also playing bike mechanic on the bike yesterday

I suppose this is better than outright forcing all cars to be lifted. Will be interesting to see how things get shaken up in the order. Will Ferrari drop? will Merc go up… will Merc drop even more :eyes:

I think the Merc and the Ferrari are both going to fall further behind the Red Bulls. That long straight after the hairpin is going to have them trailing the RBs by 10 km/h+. They’re going to be challenged by the McLarens, the Alpines, and the AlphaTauris too.

An in-season intervention by the FIA will force teams to protect their drivers from the unique traits of the new generation of Formula 1 cars that have been labelled a “recipe for disaster”.
Concerns about the porpoising and bottoming out of some F1 cars have reached a new peak with the warning that a major crash will happen sooner or later.

What a chaotic qualy, I feel bad for Seb and Aston, they made a mess, Yay for Alonso!

Unlucky Sainz(actually lucky), but think that Red Bull was always going to be too fast. Good save from Le Clerc also I suppose. Unlucky for Perez but suppose it’s only fair that Red Bull gets another lol. Merc will win constructors on reliability.
Also Schumacher… eish man.

I feel like that Mclaren stole the Ferrari strategy book this weekend, jirre that was a mess. Lando just never had the pace, Ric as well. Leclerc did well with the cards he was dealt, he also had some great overtakes. Between him and Sainz they were my drivers of the day. It also felt like they told russell to back off to give lulu a confidence boost…

Sorry, thats not a Ferrari strategy. Ferrari throw away potential wins. McLaren throws away potential points. Very different.

I find it harder and harder to support them. Feels like they are going backwards very quickly. I usually support drivers over teams anyway, so Lando, George, Max and Charles still get my cheers.

Idiot. Juri Vips has probably just destroyed what was shaping up to be a very promising career. Used a racial slur live on a Twitch stream with fellow RB Academy driver Liam Lawson. Later in the stream he also said he wasn’t wearing a pink hat because it was “gay”. So a racist and a homophobic double deal. Live, on a stream, clipped, recorded and posted to the world within moments of it happening.

Clip is spread very far, very quickly. Lawson could possibly also face sanction, both from Red Bull and Twitch - he is heard to clearly be laughing after Vips used the term and made no effort to take Vips to task for using it or to remove him from the stream.

Just don’t admit it on a stream

I dont know what comments were made, but are we getting too sensitive?

If someone calls my vellies pretty boer, I dont mind.
If someone calls me fat, they are correct.
If someone says I am as bald as Jason Statham, I take it as a compliment.

I realise that some people or groups have been discriminated against, assaulted, disgraced and humiliated. And nothing will ever really make up for that.

I do not fall in one of those groups, I think. So it is hard to give an honest and open perspective. But how many gay people find the phrase “a pink hat is gay” actually offensive?

If Juri Vips now came out and said he is actually gay, would it then be OK to say that?

Edit: I realise this is a can of worms, and most of my thoughts are probably from a place of ignorance. So please do not be offended by my train of thoughts and rather help educate me :slightly_smiling_face:
