I feel for him, but agree its probably best for both. Real question is where he will be going next… I hope its for a team with a car he can really get into and perform to his best straight away.

:belgium: 2022 Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix :belgium:

Round 14 | Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps | Francorchamps

The Belgian Grand Prix is one of the founding events of the Formula 1 World Championship. It’s been held every year bar six since the formation of the official championship in 1950 - a total of 66 times. And while there’s nothing official or confirmed yet, there are strong suggestions that this year’s Belgian GP might be the last for a while. Personally, I hope not. But in case it is, let’s hope that the race this weekend turns out to be a memorable one for the ages.

At the same time though, let’s hope it’s not memorable in the same way that last years fiasco was.

The 2021 race became particularly notable for becoming the shortest Formula One World Championship race in history and the only World Championship Grand Prix not to have any running under full green flag conditions in its duration with only two full completed laps completed behind the safety car before the race was red-flagged on lap 3 and not restarted due to adverse weather conditions with the race classification being counted back to the end of lap 1 with Max Verstappen classified 1st, George Russell 2nd, and Lewis Hamilton 3rd with half points being awarded.

Here’s a summary of F1’s 2021 low point:

The Circuit
The iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps has been part of Formula 1 since the very beginning. It hosted Formula 1 in 1950, the maiden championship year, in a race that saw the legendary Juan Manuel Fangio take victory.

At 7 kilometers and 4 meters in length, Spa remains the longest circuit on the current season. Much loved by drivers because of its mix of long straights and challenging fast corners. The size of the track and the nature of Belgian weather means it can sometimes be raining on one part of the track and dry on another, meaning grip can vary from one corner to the next.

The circuit features some of the most famous corner names in the history of motorsport: La Source, Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Les Combes, Pouhon, Stavelot, Blanchimont, and the Bus Stop Chicane.

Ahead of the 2022 Grand Prix the circuit underwent a major facility and safety facility redevelopment which had been planned since 2020. Extra run-off was added to the Eau Rouge/Radillion part of the course – changes made in response to several big accidents in recent years at that section of the track, including the fatal accident of Anthoine Hubert in 2019.

In addition, gravel traps were added to six corners on the circuit, these being: La Source, Radillion, Blanchimont, Les Combes, Stavelot and Pouhon. The track has also been resurfaced for this year’s event significantly changing the circuit’s grip levels.

The Schedule

Belgium Time is the Right Time.

The Weather

Belgium in general, and Spa in particular, have notoriously fickle weather. Last year’s rained off event is still fresh in the memory of most F1 fans.

The forecast for this weekend (at the moment!) has a lot of moisture around again. It’s highly likely that both Practice sessions on Friday and FP3 on Saturday will be wet. The rain does taper off from around 13:00 on Saturday, but there’s still a 15% chance of rain for Qualifying. Sunday has low chances of rain - but again, it can still change.

Yeah true that. Tear off in brakes wasn’t his fault though but speeding in the pit lane definitely was. Regardless, that car is too slow now, best is to just stay ahead of Merc. Give Red Bull some Gray’s where they can to at least make it fun but they won’t win.

I don’t want to say “I told you so”, but anyone thinking that “Breaking News!” “#SAGP2023! definitely happening” “DHL contracts” story from last month was real, if the shoe fits…

Warren Scheckter, CEO of SA Grand Prix, on Monday confirmed that there would be no 2023 event.

“I have seen some of the reports put out, with most of the information being incorrect. Unfortunately I am not at liberty to provide detail, but there will be no 2023 South African Grand Prix,” Scheckter told BusinessLIVE.

Round 15 | Circuit Zandvoort | Zandvoort

The Orange Army that lives at the Circuit by the Sea sees its homegrown hero return to the roller coaster in the dunes comfortably ahead in the standings, with a run of three race victories, and looking to repeat his lights to flag victory from last year. You would a brave soul to bet against Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominating again this weekend in Holland.

Last year saw the spectacular return of the Dutch Grand Prix to the F1 calendar after a 36-year absence. (It should have been 35, but, #ThanksCovid). The dust from the sand dunes, the banked turns, the wall of orange shirts and haze of orange smoke, and the smiling face of Max Verstappen as he thanked the adoring fans for their support are standout memories. Here’s the highlights in case you need reminding.

The Circuit

Circuit Zandvoort saw a lot of action in the early part of the F1 Championship. Like Silverstone, Zandvoort was first opened in 1948, part of the wave of post-war motorsport enthusiasm that swept across Europe. Originally made up of a mixture of permanent track and public roads that snaked through the sand dunes of the Zandvoort resort town.

Formula 1 arrived in the Dutch dunes in 1952, with Alberto Ascari dominating the race as he led home a 1-2-3 for Ferrari. Formula 1 would go on to race on and off at the track until 1985. It’s return to the F1 calendar came last year, after a 1-year Covid induced delay.

Despite the long break, Zandvoort has seen its fair share of action over the years. Here’s 5 dramatic moments from the Dutch Grand Prix.

The Schedule
F1 is still on Euro Time for another couple of weekends, which suits us perfectly.

The Weather

Like Spa and Belgium last weekend, Zandvoort and Holland have changeable weather at this time of the year. Add in the sometimes strong seaside wind gusts, and the weather can easily become a bit of challenge again. This year looks no different with Friday looking fine, a high chance (60%) of rain during Qualifying on Saturday, and a probably dry race on Sunday with temperatures in the mid 20s, but an outside chance of showers on race day too.

I feel like i’m the only one getting annoyed/triggered by those smoke bombs. I cannot imagine how pissed i’d be if i get to go to an actual f1 event, and i’m behind some poephol who pops that crap and fucks visibility for me. It just feels like such an ignorant/selfish thing to do…

k rant over

Piastri contract hearing is done. Mclaren will switch an old Aussie for a young one for next year. Piastri has signed a two-year contract with McLaren F1.

I am so there with you. One or two before the start and after the finish sure. But the number and frequency that the Orange Army set them off? Nah. I’d be as pissed as you if I’d spent a year’s “luxuries” money on tickets and couldn’t see anything through that smoke.

Also at the track today.

Heard they had been banned, and it was definitely a lot better in the stands today. Hopefully those chumps that managed to sneak some in took some flak from thier countrymen and it’ll get better tomorrow and by Sunday things should be smoke free.

Oooh, that was so close! Max grabs pole by 0.021 from Chuck. Carlos just a whisker further back. And The Mercs both very competitive again - Lewis was on a stonking last lap before having to abandon due to a Perez spin. Lando right there too. On the short, narrow track things may get a little spicy tomorrow.
