Apparently you have to massage their scent glands daily and squeeze the stuff out.

Today is: World Octopus Day
As the name suggests, World Octopus Day celebrates one of the most distinctive creatures living on the planet today: the octopus. This eight-legged, mysterious creature from under the sea has always been one that brings with it a load of fascination for its intelligence, mobility, and beauty.
Octopuses are worthy of appreciation for a number of reasons. First of all, they are one of the earth’s great survivors. Indeed, despite their relatively short lifespan, octopus fossils date back more than 300 million years, meaning that they pre-date even dinosaurs.
Perhaps one of the reasons that these unique creatures have survived so long under the sea is because they are also believed to be highly intelligent. With around 500 million neurons located in their brains and arms, they are able to bypass their instincts, learn lessons and solve problems in a way that not very many other sea life creatures are able to.
Some of them have even been seen to be creative, by using discarded coconut shells and making them into mobile homes. Ingenious!
In addition, octopuses are visually stunning, coming in various different colors, a multitude of sizes, and all sorts of shapes. Some live in the very shallow waters of the sea, while others can be found thousands of meters below the surface of the water. Sometimes called the chameleons of the sea, the octopus is often able to change colors to blend in with its surroundings as a form of protection against predators.
Even though they’re introverts and probably don’t want to be invited to a party for the day, plenty of ways still exist to celebrate World Octopus Day!
Put aside a small section of this day to simply get more informed about these fascinating underwater creatures. Although short-lived (some only live around 6 months) they are unique creatures with extremely interesting lives.

Have a fabulous Friday!

Today is: International Beer and Pizza Day
It would be hard to find something that makes a day as glorious as finishing it off with that perfect combination of beer and pizza. The foamy head on top of a glass of amber-colored joy seems to be tailor-made to go with the rich and cheesy texture of that favorite of treats, pizza.
It is a little wonder that these two go together so well, with the salty savory buttery crust of the pizza that is reminiscent of that other favorite bar treat, the pretzel.
Beer and Pizza Day reminds everyone to take a moment to indulge in this delightful combo, and remember the good things in life!
The history of International Beer and Pizza Day is the history of two amazing substances that traveled the long and winding roads of culinary antiquity to ultimately come together on tables and in hearts. Beer is the oldest alcoholic beverage known to man and has occupied an important part of the culinary past as both a liquid food source as well as a semi-safe way of imbibing water.
After all, with all the diseases that occupied the water in the past, and with no knowledge of where those illnesses came from, it’s hardly surprising that beer was considered one of the safest drinks around! The Ancient Egyptians included beer in every level of their food chain, and it was a favorite drink of the slaves building the pyramids as it gave them the calories and protein needed to make it through the hard workdays.
Pizza, on the other hand, heralds back to 997 AD in Gaeta, Italy, though of course, it didn’t have any tomato sauce on it in the beginning. Tomatoes didn’t come to Europe until the discovery of the New World, and when Italians discovered tomatoes they pretty much never looked back! The first place tomatoes went when found? Their favoured food, Pizza!
Finally, after thousands of years, these two amazing things came together to be celebrated in Beer and Pizza Day!
Not that long ago, back in 2016, Beer and Pizza Day came into existence when it was the brainchild of a website designer, Nick Saulino (http://www.pintsandslices.com/). Saulino, a lover of pints and slices, decided that the combination deserved a day of its own, so he advocated for International Beer and Pizza Day to be born!
Celebrating the day is as simple as getting both beer (and yes, zero alcohol beer counts too, especially if you’re driving!!) and pizza together in the same place at the same time. Ideally with family and some friends, but even solo works too. And then enjoy the day!
Have a Saturday of significance!

Today is: World Mental Health Day
Making everyone in the world more aware of the issues that are faced by people struggling with mental health is a great way to offer the beginning of a solution to the problem. The more people know, the more they can do to aid with the prevention or seek out help.
World Mental Health Day was established in 1992 by the World Federation for Mental Health. In some countries around the world, it forms just one part of the larger Mental Illness Awareness Week.
Mental health problems, ranging from issues like depression and anxiety disorders to conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, affect millions of people around the world. In fact, according to certain statistics, 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem during their lifetime and many more will see friends or family members who are affected.
Yet, even though mental health is so prevalent, it is one of the most neglected forms of health in the world today. Almost one billion people are living with a mental health disorder right now and millions of people die each year from the impact that mental health has had on them. Even so, many people still do not have access to the care that they need to appropriately handle these concerns.
The purpose of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues, increase education on the topic and attempt to eliminate the stigma attached. It is hoped that this, in turn, will encourage sufferers to seek out help and support.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has gotten on board with supporting World Mental Health Day and sees it as an opportunity to have a massive scale-up given to the investment made in the support of mental health. The WHO asserts that countries spend only 2% of their annual healthcare budgets on mental health, and that simply is not enough.
It’s time to push away the stigma, embrace the struggle, and invest in the opportunity for a more stable future when it comes to mental health. World Mental Health Day is a great day to begin!
Get on board with World Mental Health Day!

Today is: The International Day of the Girl Child
Known as the Day of Girls, for short, the International Day of the Girl Child is a day that’s observed all over the world to bring a light to and fight the injustices and inequalities faced by girls based on their gender.
The day is marked by efforts both to raise awareness and to offer opportunities to girls and young women, addressing issues like access to education, healthcare rights, career and employment and much more.
The day was initially a project designed by the non-governmental international organization, Plan International. It was inspired by their “Because I Am A Girl” campaign, which celebrated and encouraged the increasing role of girls and young women in efforts to raise awareness of gender issues across the world.
Eventually, Plan International urged the United Nations to get involved, and the first official Day of Girls took place in 2012, with a resolution backed by the international organization to cement it.
Since then, International Day of the Girl Child has been celebrated with a new theme every year. Those themes tackle the issues girls and young women face, but especially in developing nations where they don’t have as strong a voice advocating for them.
Over the years, worldwide initiatives have been taken with aims such as ending child marriage, innovating education for girls, and training young women with skills to help them excel in the workplace. Since then, thousands of events are planned every year, across the world, both sponsored by the United Nations and by independent initiatives like nonprofits and local organizations.
Every time International Day of the Girl Child comes around, groups and organizations of all sizes, as well as lone volunteers, are encouraged to raise awareness of and campaign against the discrimination and violence that girls face across the world, even with the introduction of laws, policies, and global targets meant to eliminate them.
As the theme of International Day of the Girl Child, and the issue they are trying to tackle, changes every year, so too does the ways that you can help.
In any case, it won’t be too difficult to find events, classes, and volunteering efforts around you that could use your attention and support.
Furthermore, everyone is encouraged to signal boost events and campaigns tied to the day through social media, spreading awareness of the cause and the issues that it’s trying to tackle.
Otherwise, there are few better days to educate yourself about the campaigns and global efforts to combat issues disproportionately affecting women, locally and abroad.
While learning, you might see some of the organizations and nonprofits near you raising funds to help women around the world. Organizing fundraisers of your own or hosting events can you way to get involved and show your support for women everywhere.
Male or female, don’t be kak to anyone ever, but especially not to girls today. If you are, I’ll come round to your place and klap you upside the head. Be lekker. It’s Monday!

Today is: World Arthritis Day
Yeah I know, another boring “health” day. But as important as mental health is, physical health is too. And this is one of those physical ailments that frail, puny humans don’t pay enough attention to, until it’s too late.
Throughout the world millions of people are affected by arthritis, their lives being changed by the sometimes constant pain of inflamed joints.
World Arthritis Day is a day to remember and raise awareness of this condition, and how it affects the lives of those that suffer with it. World Arthritis day was brought about by the Arthritis Foundation to do just that, and to encourage policymakers to help lower the burden of those suffering from Arthritis all over the world.
Arthritis is cleanly summed up in its name, being derived from the greek words arthro, meaning joint, and itis, meaning inflammation. As the name implies it is a condition involving inflammation of the joints, but unlike the common conception that it is a disease all its own, it is always a symptom of another affliction.
Gout, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Lupus are just some of the more common causes of this painful and often crippling condition. Arthritis has been shown to have been with us as long as creatures have had bones, there’s even evidence that ankle arthritis was present in dinosaurs by the study of fossils.
Research has shown that it has been present in humans at least as far back as 4500 BC, and has been shown to be one of the most common afflictions of the prehistoric peoples. It was first closely examined and classified in William Musgraves work, De Arthritide symptomatica, written in 1715.
For conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, there is no cure, though there are often treatments that can be done. Largely these are basic health controls, including increasing exercise and working to reduce your weight.
Other than that the usual treatments are pharmaceutical in nature and focus on reducing the pain of the condition rather than seeking to remove it.
Physical therapy has often been seen to be effective in helping, but the nature of the condition often impedes the implementation of such therapy. Motion hurts, but motion is shown to be among the best treatments. By keeping the joint mobile it helps to reduce the constant inflammation and has shown marked improvements in the long-term relief of the pain associated with it.
Many people associate this condition with the elderly and the health concerns that affect them, and statistical evidence supports that those over 65 are in fact the primary sufferers. But there is an often forgotten section of people who are under that age, almost 30% of all sufferers are under the age of 65, with some of them being no older than their teen years, and some rare cases existing even in the very young.
Take the time to educate yourself on this condition, and find the ways you can help prevent or hold-off this condition in your own life. By taking steps to improve your health today, you can help prevent this being something that limits your life. You can also pop on over to the Arthritis Foundations webpage and take their test to find out if you’re at risk for Osteoarthritis.
World Arthritis Day is a great time to get out and lend a helping hand to those suffering from this condition. If you have relatives who suffer from it, take a day to go over and help them out with the things that are made difficult for them because of their condition. Take some time to do some research and get a clear understanding of how people have their lives affected by it.
Stretch and flex those joints - you’re not getting any younger! And have a great Tuesday.

Today is: No Bra Day
Every year hundreds of thousands new cases of breast cancer occur in the United States alone, with approximately 250,000 of them being invasive forms of breast cancer, and an additional 2,600 cases being found in men.
No Bra Day encourages women everywhere to go without their bra to raise awareness for breast cancer and the challenges that those with it faces. If you know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer or just want to help continue the fight against it, No Bra Day is an opportunity to help those around you know that the fight is ongoing!
If you are a woman and you are reading this, you will know exactly what we are referring to when we say that removing your bra once you get home is one of life’s great pleasures! If you are a man, you will just have to take our word for it. However, No Bra Day does not celebrate this little comfort that all women can relate to. It is much bigger and more important than this.
No Bra Day is about the fight against breast cancer. A lot of people know someone who has experienced breast cancer. It is a horrible disease, which can have a heartbreaking conclusion.
No Bra Day encourages women around the world to ditch their bra to raise awareness for this disease. It is a great day in terms of supporting women who have experienced breast cancer or are going through it at the moment, as well as raising awareness about the condition so that we can, hopefully, find a cure for it.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. In fact, it is believed that one in eight women will be diagnosed with this illness in their lifetime. That’s a pretty high number! While there is a good chance of recovery, there have been a lot of women who have lost their lives because of this terrible disease.
Early diagnosis is imperative, and while breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50-years-old, women of any age can get it. It is important that we have days like No Bra Day so that we can raise awareness about this condition and make sure that we are all doing our best to raise funds and education so that we can find a cure for breast cancer.
No Bra Day was established to both raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society, as well as to drive opportunities for fund-raising to help keep the research moving. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal.
But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed, and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies. Breasts are of the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having to have them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.
“No Bra Day” may sound like some sexy, frivolous fun at first, but it isn’t. It’s darn serious. Ladies, get your boobs checked regularly. But do feel free to go braless if you’d like and if your comfortable time it’s it!

Today is: World Standards Day
World Standards Day is an international day celebrated internationally each year on 14 October. The day honours the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organisations. The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardisation to the global economy.
Throughout the world, there is a set of standards that have been established that companies, organizations, and industries have all agreed to hold up.
These standards have been established by mutual agreement between these organizations as part of their participation in the ISO, the International Organization for Standardization. It was these kinds of standards that helped drive the industrial revolution, and today it drives the advancement of all technologies from automotive to telecommunications. World Standards Day celebrates the work of these men and women, and the contribution their work makes to the world at large.
Standards are important, we all know that and were all raised with this concept, but it’s entirely possible that we aren’t truly cognizant of just how vitally important standards can be. In the days before international standards and industrialization things, there was no way to get a replacement part for a machine or piece of equipment that you owned without going to the original manufacturer. Even then it was entirely possible that they’d only be able to do a ‘best fit’ sort of fix. Without automation or a set of standards to work by, every piece of these machines was purpose-built, meaning they were unique to that device
The industrial revolution saw the beginning of an important change, and while many people say that fire was man’s most important invention, it’s entirely possible that it was actually standardization. Today when you need a replacement screw, you know you can go down to the hardware store and get one.
When you get a new router you know that it will be able to communicate with the networks and other electronic equipment because they all operate on a set of standardized frequencies. Even your cars run on a certain kind of fuel because the ISO set the standard for vehicles of that type. World Standards Day celebrates the hard work of the ISO and the way that it has shaped the world we have today.
The best way to Celebrate World Standards Day is just to take some time to contemplate all of the things in your life that are standardized, and how much easier it makes things.
Standards dictate the sizes, shapes, composition, frequency, and all the other fiddly bits that make our world fit together. Imagine what our lives would be without standardization!
Keep it ISO now! We’ve got standards around here, you know?!
