When I was a kid, after the black credit’s screen, they would have a still image of Big Bird with his mouth open that completely freaked me out. I hated seeing that picture. Every day when the credits came on, I would run away screaming.

My brother used to think I was afraid of the words.

Just 50 days remaining in 2021!

Today is: :star: World Origami Day

Many people aren’t aware of the fact that a particularly special day is about to be celebrated. In fact, it’s an especially important one for all those paper folding fanatics out there. For all of those folks who look at a flat sheet of paper and dream of all of the exciting objects that could be made out of it, simply by folding.

So for those who happen to love the art of folding paper and creating beautiful creations from paper, cloth, dollar bills, napkins, or anything that’ll hold a crease, World Origami Day is for you.

World Origami Day was organized to coincide with the birthday of Lillian Oppenheimer, the founder of the first origami group in the United States. Oppenheimer, who lived from 1898 to 1992, also was instrumental in the founding of the British Origami Society, in addition to Origami USA. But, of course, Origami has quite a long history that goes much further back beyond Ms. Oppenheimer’s influence.

The art of folding paper seems to have arisen in several places throughout the world, including places such as Europe, China, and Japan. This particular form of art has accompanied traditions and celebrations of every kind, including funerals, birthdays, weddings and more.

image

The first known historical reference to a paper model is in a poem, which somehow seems appropriate given that such things are traditionally written on paper. In that poem, a butterfly design was referenced in connection to Shinto weddings. But that’s just one of many ways that these lovely designs were used!

In Europe, it was napkin folding that was all the rage, a tradition that was abundant during the 17th and 18th centuries as a sign of being a good host or hostess. Sadly, this particular tradition would eventually fade out and become nearly forgotten until recent decades, when it is now beginning to see something of a resurgence.

image

When Japan opened its borders in the late 1800’s, they started incorporating German paper folding techniques, and these two worlds came together in a glorious union.

These days, Origami has been used as a beacon of hope, with the tradition of folding a thousand cranes being done for people who are in the hospital fighting cancer, for instance.

image

This tradition came from the experience of a young girl, Sadako Sakasi, who developed leukemia 10 years after the atomic bomb was dropped on her village of Hiroshima during World War II. While she was in the hospital, she had heard that a sick person who folded 1000 paper cranes would get well soon, so she decided to do it.

Sadako only succeeded in folding 644 paper cranes before she died peacefully. But people all over the world heard her story and were inspired. They joined together to build the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima. To this day, children from all over the world send paper cranes to be placed at the monument in Sadako’s honour.

Chill, fold something, and have a great day! I’m :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Chicken Soup for the Soul Day

There are some books that are written to see you through the darkest days, to help shine light through the ponderous pitch-black clouds of the sky that hangs overhead. The “Chicken Soup For The Soul” series of books was produced explicitly for that purpose.

Many are the readers who have had this book by their side as they do their best to live through the worst days of their life, and it’s all thanks to Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen that these books came to light. Chicken Soup For The Soul Day celebrates the light these two men have shed into the lives of others through this much-needed series of books.

You may have heard the words “chicken soup’ and immediately started drooling over the thought! We don’t blame you. While there will be plenty of time for you to tuck into some chicken soup on this day, that’s not what this day is about. Yes, you can indulge in this comforting food, but it is important to understand what Chicken Soup for the Soul Day is really all about. Chicken Soup for the Soul Day is actually a media, consumer good, and self-help business that is situated in Connecticut’s Cos Cob area.

The brand is familiar thanks to its series of books entitled “Chicken Soup for the Soul”. The first book follows inspirational stories about ordinary people. These are true stories, and they’re incredibly inspiring. The other books from the series follow the same notion, i.e. depicting true stories. This series became a bit of a social phenomenon, and it was not long for them to be deemed a best-seller. In fact, they have been popular for a couple of decades now, with more than 110 million copies being sold in Canada and the United States.

Not only is Chicken Soup for the Soul Day about celebrating these books, but it is about honoring everything they stand for. These books are all about uplifting and enlightening people, and these are the sort of things that we should all be trying to do on Chicken Soup for the Soul Day and every day forward for that matter!

In 1993 two motivational speakers came together to share the stories they had collected from their audience members. Collections of stories that shared uplifting, enlightening moments of human behavior, moments that demonstrate that in spite of the dark news constantly coming from the internet and TV, there is a hearty helping of good in everyone. Simple acts of kindness that seem inconsequential to the person doing it can have a massive impact on the person receiving it.

image

From that first edition the book series has exploded in popularity, and over the following 24 years, 200 different titles under that theme have been published. One of the most popular and prolific series of all time, new editions continue to be published for every possible theme, including “Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul” and “Chicken Soup For The Pet Lover’s Soul” among dozens of others.

So this is where it all started for Chicken Soup for the Soul Day! The authors have said that the day is about celebrating: “who you are, where you’ve been, where you’re going, and who you will be thankful to when you get there!”

Ahh, Friday. It’s the chicken soup of days! :+1::grinning:

That reminds me. I better use my homemade chicken broth that I took out of the freezer before it goes bad. Too bad it is too hot out for ramen. That’s just “who I am” ;D

Yeah I’m with you there. I can’t like having soup in hot weather or climates.

I ended up throwing my broth into my rice cooker on slow cooker mode with two boneless chicken breasts and two habaneros. Gonna take two forks and shred them, and figure out something to do with them. Maybe I’ll make another loaf of bread.

I was so happy to see fresh habs at pnp for R50/kg. I should have gotten more than R15 worth tbh. I’ve only got about 20 chillies just starting to grow at the moment. And checkers was all out of my favorite local sri racha sauce.

Today is: :star: World Kindness Day

Kindness Day was born when a collection of humanitarian groups came together on November 13, 1997, and made a “Declaration of Kindness”. Likewise, on Kindness Day everyone is encouraged to make a similar declaration. Donating books, food, or clothes to your local community is a great way to celebrate.

However, pledging to commit just one act of kindness is no less worthwhile: hold the door open for a stranger, compliment your neighbor on their collection of garden gnomes, let your partner have control of the TV remote for the evening.

image

World Kindness Day first began as a day of observation by the World Kindness Movement. The organization was registered as an official NGO under Swiss law in 2019. However, the history of the group reaches right back to a Tokyo-based convention in 1997.

A range of associations and institutions based in countries including Thailand, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States had been built at this conference because of their combined dedication to promoting kindness in society. The initial formation of the World Kindness Movement formed as a result of this event.

The written declaration of their inception was created stating their “pledge to join together to build a kinder and more compassionate world.” In the pursuit of this aim, in 1998, they would help to launch the inaugural World Kindness Day.

The reason for World Kindness Day is detailed by the World Kindness Movement. “to highlight good deeds in the community focusing on the positive power and the common thread of kindness which binds us.”

This day has become globally recognized since it’s creation more than two decades ago. The many events that take place on this day attract countless participants from all parts of the globe. This day is filled with kindness and activities like dance mobs, concerts, the distribution of kindness cards, and random acts of kindness such as paying for someone shopping or helping someone with their bags.

Many people are extremely focused on their own lives and can easily forget to take a moment to think about what others may need. However, doing something good for others can also be good for you too. It can be really fun planning and seeing the way that others appreciate your kindness.

It is valuable for everyone to celebrate the benefits and kindness we derive from this core aspect of human nature. World Kindness Day can help to remind us that we aren’t alone in our lives, others are kind and care for us, and we certainly don’t live in a world where good doesn’t exist.

Be kind to others, be kind to the people in your life, and importantly, be kind to yourself! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: International Tongue Twister Day

It’s International Tongue Twister Day and if you’re looking for a mouthful, you could celebrate by talking about a sheikh who isn’t feeling well. He’s sixth in line and has some livestock, it seems, and one of his sheep is also under the weather. To explain all this you could say:

The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick.

That phrase was featured by Guinness World Records as the most difficult tongue twister in the English language in 1974, the last year the organization tracked tongue twisters.

It’s still pretty hard to say today, but you can try a hack recommended by Eliza Simpson, a dialect coach in New York.

“I look at the tongue twister and I think of an image for each word. And then as I’m going through the tongue twister, it’s like, I’m in my mind literally swiping through flashcards of images. I go from image to image to image. And I find this is the way to get my muscles to do what my brain is asking.”

Simpson says tongue twisters are challenging and beneficial for brains.

“Tongue twisters are important because they combine two things that help humans learn. They combine repetition and they can find an element of surprise and fun.”

One particularly old and well-known tongue twister dates back to at least 1836, if not earlier. It appeared in Peter Piper’s Practical Principles of Plain and Perfect Pronunciation.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled Peppers.
Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled Peppers?
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled Peppers,
Where’s the peck of pickled Peppers Peter Piper picked?

image

Some other classics to try twist your tongue around:

  • How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
  • She sees cheese.
  • Chop shops stock chops.
  • If a dog chews shoes, whose shoes does he choose?
  • Seventy-seven benevolent elephants
  • A loyal warrior will rarely worry why we rule.
  • There was a minimum of cinnamon in the aluminum pan.
  • How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?
  • A pessimistic pest exists amidst us.
  • Pad kid poured curd pulled cod.

She sells pickled peppers to a woodchuck on the seashore!:+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Bundt Cake Day

Another day for our intrepid and adventurous bakers - it’s Bundt Cake Day!

Everyone loves a good piece of cake, but the truly enlightened know that there is no better cake than the bundt cake. The very shape of it speaks of a certain fancifulness that brings a bit of elegance to any affair it is brought to.

The bundt cake doesn’t indicate any particular recipe used in its creation but instead speaks of its distinctive shape, a ring-shaped cake that can come in any number of configurations. If you love the whimsical shape of a bundt cake, then Bundt Cake Day is the holiday for you.

image

The bundt cake pan was designed to help aid in the preparation of the cake, as the ring-like shape aids in creating an even cooking surface that allows heat to be distributed better throughout the whole. Aside from this one distinguishing feature, a bundt cake it merely a cake made in a bundt pan. Since the design first became popular the bundt cake pan has been used for all sorts of culinary treats, including jello molds, cakes, ice cream, and even certain concoctions of fruit.

When a cake is prepared in a bundt cake pan, however, there are certain traditional methods of preparation that tend to take precedence, in part as a way of illustrating the inherent beauty of the pan.

One such tradition is the drizzling of frosting or powdered sugar as a topping, rather than a heavy frosting, though all too often they are served undecorated. Bundt cakes are also a favorite of those who like to create multicolored cakes, as it can be used to produce the most beautiful designs.

It wasn’t until David and Mark Alquist, aspiring American businessmen, took steps to increase the popularity of the bundt cake that it finally came into its own. They carried it for nearly 20 years, having very poor sales until the winner of a Pillsbury Bake-Off created a ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ cake that resulted in nearly 200,000 requests for the pan.

Celebrating bundt cake day is best done in the most simple of ways, making a cake in a bundt pan. We suggest a lemon cake drizzled with a light lemon-frosting and lemon zest for a start, a certain crowd pleasure if your recipients have a love of citrus. Get together with your friends and family to share bundt cake recipes and the joy of Bundt Cake Day.

And sure, if you don’t have a Bundt pan, or simply can’t be bothered to bake your own, you can pop round to your local bakery to pick one up instead.

It’s also a fine way to celebrate a birthday! Happy Bundt Day! :+1::grinning:
