Today is: :star: Unfriend Day

Ever scrolled through your Facebook (or Twitter, or Instagram, or any other social platform) and realised you don’t recognise half the names popping up in your News Feed? Friend list at 1000 people and counting? Is your wall cluttered with posts you don’t care about from people you don’t remember?

Are you sick and tired of all of the TV show spoilers, conceited selfies, constant game invitations and endless photo sessions of someone’s dog/baby/vacation that you are being bombarded with 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 day a year? If you’ve answered yes to at least one of these questions, then Unfriend Day is probably the perfect the holiday for you!

image

“Unfriend”…maybe we should just start by clearing up how and when “to (un)friend” even became a verb to begin with, after hundreds of years of the word “friend” being a plain old noun you used to describe someone you had a good, close relationship with, and the word “unfriend” not even being in the realm of existence. Oxford Dictionary’s 2009 word of the year was, in fact, “unfriend”, which it defines as, “verb – To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook.”

Christine Lindberg, Senior Lexicographer for Oxford’s US dictionary program, explained Dictionary’s rather controversial choice, saying, “It has both currency and potential longevity. In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year.”

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel founded Unfriend Day in 2014 to combat the growing trend of social media profiles collecting ‘friends’ like Pokemon cards, amassing a ridiculous amount of ‘friends’ they barely know at all in short periods of time. Getting rid of distant acquaintances on Unfriend Day can help streamline your internet experience, allowing you to use your profiles to keep in touch with people you really care about, and preserving the true definition of ‘friend.’

Firstly, as well as somewhat ironically, there is a Facebook page for the day which you can ‘like’, which suggests criteria that can be used in deciding who to unfriend. These people include those who are constantly asking you to lend them money you’ll never see again, inviting you to ‘like’ whatever page they’re obsessed with this week, or complaining about every little thing that happens to them. So what are you waiting for?

Celebrate Unfriend Day by taking advantage of this judgement-free opportunity to ditch the total strangers and on your ‘friend’ list! On a slightly more serious note, Unfriend Day can in fact be a good time to think about the amount of superficial relationships people engage in the era of social media, ‘likes’, ‘retweets’, etc. Are you possibly neglecting the people in your life who really love you and care about your well-being sitting in front of you laptop for hours on end?

Are you taking all sorts of pictures of activities you should just be enjoying with your actual friends, family or significant other just so you can quickly upload them to Facebook and garner ‘likes’ from people you don’t really like too much anyway? As silly as these questions may sound, people replacing real human contact and interactions with ‘likes’ and so on is becoming a legitimate problem in our society. Take the time this Unfriend Day to make sure this is not happening in your life.

Happy Unfriend Day, friends! :grinning::+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Occult Day

History is full of rich and mysterious religions, practices, and beliefs that shaped the world we live in, hinting at powers below the surface of the mundane world.

When you start to notice the mystical, the mystical will start to notice you. Dacha Avelin

Occult Day encourages us to delve into this mysterious world, to commune with spirits and seek the truths that hide behind the stars and between the shadows. If you’ve ever heard strange whispers or dreamt dreams that became prophetic, then Occult Day is your opportunity to listen a little closer, dream a little deeper, and reach for those mysteries that lie just beyond the reach of the common man.

image

Occult Day was established to encourage those who walk in the sun to take some time dancing in the shadows. Occult practices are not all dangerous paths and profane dealings with entities of dubious moral intent, instead they are a way to expand our consciousness and understand the part of ourselves that lives outside the material.

Every culture has its mystery religions and occult practices, whether it’s the complex workings of Ritual Magic or the exploration of G-d through the Kaballah in Judaism, there isn’t a single culture that isn’t touched by the Occult.

image

The word occult itself is based in the word occultus in Latin, a word which means “clandestine, hidden, secret” and which was extended into Occult to mean “Knowledge of the Hidden”.

The hidden that is referred to isn’t merely that which lies beneath the stone or hidden in the dark, but those places within ourselves that call out in our wilder moments, asking us to truly embrace our spiritual selves and the secrets it has to impart on us. Occult Day is a chance to finally listen and move forward into your greater knowledge.

Occult Day is best practiced by taking a little time to cultivate your spiritual self. Have you always been drawn to Tarot Cards and the secrets they impart? Do the spirits try to speak to you through Ouija boards or reveal themselves to you in the mirror?

Take time to listen on Occult Day, and perhaps reach out to them and what they have to say to you. We are all of us a little bit magical, and embracing and honoring that will help us live more honest, more complete, fuller lives in joy and mystery.

My Magic 8 Ball predicts a great day for everyone that’s read this far! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: International Men’s Day

International Men’s Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on November 19 to recognize and celebrate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of men. The objectives of celebrating an International Men’s Day are set out in ‘All The Six Pillars of International Men’s Day’.

It is an occasion to celebrate boys’ and men’s achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to nation, union, society, community, family, marriage, and childcare. The broader and ultimate aim of the event is to promote basic humanitarian values, as well as awareness towards men’s issues, with a particular focus on mental health issues.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of forty-five. In terms of statistics, it seems that more women are diagnosed with depression more often than men, but that men are more likely to commit suicide.

Clearly there are reasons for this that are particular to men. Gender, cultural conditioning, and adequate role-models are contributing factors. As many women as men may contemplate ending their own lives, but men are more likely to go through with it, and often in violent ways. This says something about the psychology, attitudes, and mental well-being of men in our communities.

From a young age, boys are gendered in a particular way – boys will be boys, they are told, and boys don’t cry. With variation, it is a sensibility found in many cultures around the globe. As they grow up men are encouraged to present a strong, unaffected image, that often masks the deep need to communicate what is going on for them emotionally.

Since 1999 the methods of commemorating International Men’s Day have included the giving and receiving of gifts, public seminars, forums, conferences, classroom activities at schools, Men’s Health events, Movember fundraisers, radio and television programs, Parliamentary speeches, Government Observances, Church observances, prayer meetings, peaceful gatherings and marches, awards ceremonies, special retail promotions, music concerts and art displays.

The idea for this first day first came to Thomas Oaster, a professor in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, who felt it was important to draw attention to the issues of men. Originally celebrated on 7 February, it had success for a couple of years but then waned.

Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a professor from Trinidad and Tobago, revived the day but changed it to November 17. This date was significant because it was not only the birthdate of Teelucksingh’s father, but it was also the date in 1989 that the Trinidad & Tobago soccer team qualified for the World Cup, uniting the country with their efforts.

International Men’s Day seeks to raise awareness about mental health issues in men, as well as other health and societal issues, by encouraging men to open up and communicate with others. The traditional ideas of what masculinity means in society is changing, and needs to change, if vulnerable men are to be protected from these harmful conditions.

Man up! Celebrate the men in your life. And have a great Friday! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Name Your PC Day :computer:

They’re your best friend on almost any day, they work tirelessly to keep you in communication with friends and family, connected with work and the goings-on in the world around you.

Sometimes they need a little love, and sometimes they need to be recognized as the individuals they are.

Just like your car, your PC has a personality all its own, and just like your car, it deserves a name of its own. Name Your PC Day is your opportunity to stop putting that off and finally christen your PC once and for all.

The history of Name Your PC Day is as old as any object we’ve ever owned and named, whether it’s the first sword that had a name carved into it, or a ship that was christened with a broken bottle of champagne. We live alongside these every day, whether our lives depend on them in the literal sense, or they get us to work each day.

image

So what to name your digital companion? Well, there’s a lot of different ways to choose a name, some of them based on what your PC is designed to do. Got yourself a computer primarily used for research and writing, a grand beast that contains reams of unprinted stories, reports, and information? Perhaps you should name your PC “Alexandria”.

Is it a repository of gaming power, prepped and primed like a race-car tuned to take the best advantage of every digital pathway it races down? Then, by all means, name it something like “Rocket” or perhaps something as grand as “Excalibur”.

Name Your PC Day is your chance to break out your creativity and figure out what to call your favorite digital vehicle.

Name Your PC Day is celebrated by naming your PC, of course! Spend some time and think about it, ask around and talk to your friends, it never hurts to poll those who live in and around you. Be careful about asking your partner, though, they might imply you should name it something that indicates it’s your other lover. One supposes it would be hard to go wrong with a gender neutral real name like “Sam” in that case, now would it?

And just because it says “PC” in the days name doesn’t mean it’s not an inclusive day for all our personal computers - not just the Windows devices. Use today to give names to Apple computers, Chromebooks, tablets, or even your cell phone if it’s your primary “personal computer”

Drop those PC handles in the comments below, and have a top class Saturday! :computer::+1::grinning:
