Today is: :star: Electronic Greetings Day

You remember all of those sometimes cute, sometimes funny, and sometimes downright obnoxious electronic greeting cards that used to appear in your email inbox? Well, if you hadn’t guessed it, there’s actually a day devoted to electronic greetings. Fittingly, that day is known as Electronic Greetings Day.

With technology growing to be an ever more important component of our day to day lives over the last few decades and the fact that it’s continuing to do so (no arguing – in all likelihood you’re reading this article on a computer, a smartphone, or a tablet), the advent of electronic greetings became inevitable.

You might remember all of those e-cards back in the late 1990s when everyone in the US was just starting to have a personal computer at home – those may seem so dated now, with their low-resolution graphics and all, but in their day it was quite an exciting thing to get an animated greeting card in your email.

image

These days, things like Facebook stickers and other electronic greetings dominate the field, but the concept remains more or less unchanged.

Electronic greetings are here to stay, and why not celebrate them with their own day? Since any mention of exactly when Electronic Greetings Day first occurred seems to be unavailable, we’re going to venture a guess and posit that the occasion was created by those websites which sell e-cards – most likely sometime between the late 1990s and mid-2000s.

If you haven’t gotten any e-cards lately and would like to, then you might have to start the process and send a few yourself. It’s true that the genre may seem a bit dated, but if you think about it, those stickers that you can send in many instant messenger services (such as Facebook and Telegram) are a sort of more modern evolution of the same ideas. But e-cards are far from dead, and one can easily find websites with numerous different e-cards for any occasion.

And if you’ve never sent anyone an e-card before in your life, then Electronic Greetings Day marks the perfect occasion to go ahead and do just that.

This is me electronically wishing you a fantastic day and week! :+1::grinning:

Ah yes, those days when it took forever to load up an animated Christmas card using 56K dial up…

And all the spam that came with it when your parents put your email address into some unencrypted web form to send that animated card.

Today is: :star: International Computer Security Day

These days, electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers make up an important component of our everyday lives. While communication has become easier and more efficient than ever before, these technological advancements have brought with them new concerns about privacy and security. There’s even a holiday dedicated to keeping your online data safe and secure – International Computer Security Day.

Computer Security Day began in 1988, around the time that computers were becoming commonplace, even if they were yet to become ubiquitous in homes. The 1980s saw not only increased usage of computers, especially in business and government, and the internet was in its early stages.

While hacking and viruses have virtually been around since the early days of modern computing, evolving and increasingly sophisticated technologies began to see more applications, and therefore more security risks due to the simple fact that more data was at risk as computers found their way into banks, government offices, and businesses.

image

More important data stored on computers and servers meant more valuable information for hackers, and this meant higher profile cases of security breaches. As such, online security became an important concern by the end of the decade, and so Computer Security Day was created to raise awareness about computer security.

The most obvious way to celebrate Computer Security day would be to focus on ensuring that your computer, your devices, and the data you have in the cloud are all secure.

image

One very important thing to do for your online security is to have strong passwords and keep them updated regularly, as this reduces the chances of your personal data falling into the wrong hands. If you aren’t the sort of person who’s good at coming up with strong passwords (and let’s be honest, some of us aren’t), then there are a number of password managers which you can choose from to generate random passwords and also save them so you don’t have to remember them.

One strategy is to mix upper and lowercase letters with symbols, as this can be harder to guess and also difficult to hack – and passwords increase in difficulty the longer they are. Surprisingly, it doesn’t seem that everyone would think to do this, because “123456” and “password” have remained the two most popular passwords for years now.

image

And don’t use the same password over and over for every online account you have – this ensures that if someone manages to get into one of your accounts, then they can access all of your accounts. Bad idea. So make strong passwords, don’t recycle them, and update them regularly.

Another thing that you can do to celebrate Computer Security Day is to update all of your spyware and malware protection software. Follow up with thorough scans, and you should have a more secure computer or device as an end result. While you may be aware that computers require such protection, you should also remember that your other devices such as tablets and smartphones are also vulnerable to malware and spyware – so take the necessary measures to keep them secure.

And if you still have a computer running the outdated Windows XP or Vista, you should be aware that this creates huge security vulnerabilities for you. So upgrade your OS or your device. For the rest of us with more contemporary operating systems, it’s still important to install the regular security updates in order to stay safe.

Be vigilant and stay safe out there folks. On and offline! :+1::grinning:

And it comes after our vape shop website was hacked and it took you either to a porn site or tried to get your password.
It was between me and the regional manager’s password - he won tho, since mine was a totally random keyboard smash and his was just 1 word, nothing fancy, nothing difficult

Today is: :star: World AIDS Day

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, when discovered in the 1980s, seemed to reach out into the world and change the way humans previously thought about almost everything, from how they got their vaccinations or blood transfusions to the way they chose their sexual practices.

The revelation of this disease and the virus behind it (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) was met with a campaign of fear and superstition that had the power to harm both those who had it, and even further out into the families and friends of those who surrounded them.

image

World AIDS Day was first held in 1988, just four years after the discovery of the virus and its official classification. Since the discovery of the virus and its subsequent disease, more than 35 million people have died from AIDS, putting it far ahead of many of the other most devastating diseases in the history of humans.

HIV works in the body by weakening its natural immune system through the destruction of cells that would normally protect the body by fighting off infections.

From the onset of HIV/AIDS, the work of men and women all over the world has led to a greater understanding of the disease (a person can’t contract it by sharing a can of coke or a toilet seat, for instance), but that has only served to slow the tide but has not stopped it. The spread of the disease is still prevalent today, with more than 1.5 million people each year diagnosed with HIV throughout the globe. And even with the campaign to help with awareness, many people are still out there who don’t know or understand the truth or facts about it.

Start off the observance of this day by educating yourself and your family about AIDS by finding resources on websites such as worldaidsday.org. Since there is a lot of misinformation out there in the world, do be sure that the places where the information on AIDS/HIV comes from are respected, trusted, viable resources that are offering truthful and factual information.

For instance, here are some important pieces of basic information to get started:

  • There still is no cure for HIV. While full-blown AIDS can now be avoided by some people who have HIV, and there are treatments to help people live a more normal and full life, HIV is still no joke and should be taken as seriously as any other potentially fatal disease.
  • HIV/AIDS is spreadable, even when being treated. One of the most important ways to stop the virus is to avoid sharing it. Those who have it should be well-educated by their doctors to understand exactly what precautions they need to take to keep from spreading it to other people, based on their viral load.
  • Getting AIDS does not have to mean that your life is over. While the best way to stay healthy is to avoid HIV and AIDS altogether, many advances have been made in treatment to help people with the virus to live healthy, normal lives and even to have healthy children.
  • Treatment for HIV/AIDS is no longer very complicated. While an HIV/AIDS diagnosis used to mean a significant interruption to a person’s lifestyle, today those with the disease usually have to take between one and four pills per day.

Practice safe sex. No glove, no love. Protect yourself and those you care about. :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: National Fritters Day

Before I read about National Fritters Day I had no idea that fritters came in any other variety than pumpkin. Then I discovered that there were apple fritters, blueberry fritters, and banana fritters, pineapple fritters, corn fritters (okay, I knew about those ones) and even clam and shrimp fritters.

Fritters are popular all over the world, though obviously they’re not called fritters everywhere you go. In Asia there are several varieties, including the Burmese a-kyaw which is popularly made with a rich gourd filling, and are typically served with tea, or for breakfast. Because who doesn’t like deep fried gourds for breakfast? Admittedly, they also have it made from chickpea, onion, brown bean paste, just to name a few.

In Indonesia fritters are called gorengan, with one of the most popular being pisand goring, a banana based fritter. But don’t let that stop you from trying the breadfruit and sweet potato varieties. In Indonesia they think the perfect accompaniment to fritters is bird’s eye chili. Apparently they enjoy some soul searing spice with their fritters.

One type of fritter you may not have realized you’ve had is tempura. That’s right, that delicious battered and fried dish from your favourite Japanese restaurant is also considered a fritter. Of course, if all one has to do is batter and fry something to make a fritter, does that make deep fried Twinkies a Twinkie Fritter?

Enjoy your favourite fritter on Fritters Day, and then share them with a friend!

Frit. Frit. Fritters! :+1::grinning:
