What are you playing now?

I would love to do that. How viable is Eve Online for single player?

Stay away! It’s a huge learning curve, not to mention the time sink. At least from my perspective on past experience, not sure if things have changed in a few years.

Curious…

Yes I did, in a big way. I return to it every now and then but ultimately the game loop drives me away after a while. Staring at job boards, looking for something “interesting” and realising that they are all just the same gameplay loops in different names in different systems. If there were some stories I could follow, would make it last longer for me.

There is no single player mode. You play in a one server with everyone. You can easily play the game solo and enjoy it in the “safer” areas of space. Plenty to do, space quests and stories to follow, start your own little empire, trade, mine etc. Just always know that there are people out there who would love to ruin your day and often try to do so. Nowhere is really safe. Many people don’t like this aspect of the game. I didn’t, until I hunted down and blew up the ship of the pirate (real person) who killed my first ship that I was so proud of. One of my best memories.

When I play the game for the PVE, I am well aware that I will lose ships in doing so at some point and take care to minimise the losses etc.

This game has the most involved, steep learning curve in any MMO I have played, which is why I return every now and then, to keep learning.

Damn Shrike. You are really selling the game to me.

I’ve read up about it before. Will do so again.

I agree and disagree here. Yes there is a huge learning curve but you can chunk it down and focus on the things you need to learn to do the things you want to. As for timesink, yes that is true but again it depends on what you want to do and how much of it you want to do.

Note: one very very important thing to know about Eve and it makes it completely unique in MMOs: the skills your character learn are attained over time, real time. You “learn” the first level of a skill and the higher levels you go, the longer in time it takes. Nothing you do in game will make that change, so… if you play a little bit, your pilot keeps learning skills even when you are not online. You set all the skills you want to learn and are able to learn and let it go.

Alternatively you can spend in game currency (credits) to accelerate that learning by making that currency by playing a lot.

The game is free to play throughout the whole game. The caveat is that as a F2P player, your characters are limited in the skills that they can learn and the ships/systems that can use because of that limit in skill range. Give it a go, have fun. I will be back in game sometime soon and can really help to make your experience easier. On the upside of that is that you can make your subscription with in game currency and happily never spend real money on it. That takes a lot of work though but it is doable.

How much, real world monies, have you spent on the game?

Until I had a stable of money making characters with enough skills and friends/people to help? A monthly sub of $14. The last time I payed that sub was many years ago. Now I live off the spoils of my many adventures and can keep 2-3 accounts (3 subscriptions worth) going for a while still. I can always opt to return to the more lucrative andeavours in game to make more in game currency to pay for more months of play time. Those lucrative play styles involve a lot of time though, so not sure if I will ever return to them.

I’m currently playing Hades, my second foray into roguelikes (the first being Dead Cells), and this is easily my GOTY for 2020. I was not ready for how much I’m enjoying it. The fresh take on Greek mythology and the Greek pantheon, the clean design behind the interconnected systems that make up the gameplay mechanics, the level design, the art style.

Wow! What a game! I can’t stress how much I love this game. I haven’t gotten to Ori and the Will of the Wisps yet but it’s going to take a lot to dethrone Hades (coming from a guy who considered Ori and the Blind Forest a classic for the past decade). Supergiant Games knocked it out of the park.

Btw, my current competitive multiplayer fix is Rocket League.

I absolutely adore Hades as well, but feel I had a stronger emotional connection with Ori. It is my GOTY for 2020, with Hades a very close second.

I am in shock - no dota?

GTA 2 PC…

Started up Dragon’s Dogma on the Switch. Hopefully this time I make it to the DLC :stuck_out_tongue:

I imagine Ori will get me on its side but I think the thing that will stick with me on Hades is the instant replay value.

Shock and awe :speak_no_evil:. TBH I’ve fallen out of love playing the game over the last 2 years due to a combination of things. Time. A single match is too much of a time investment (30 - 60 minutes). Every MP community is toxic, but imagine the one game you had time for tonight was the toxic one? No fun + time wasted. Whereas with Rocket League, I can just play a 5-minute match and move on or queue the next, same with the fighting games I play or even an Overwatch.

It’s also gotten insanely complex in the last 2 years. I just can’t. I still watch though.

Just finished “A Short Hike”! Such a sweet little game. I like the pixel effects but feel it is TOO pixelated. The charm could have been preserved with maybe slightly higher resolution.

Next up is ABZU.

Currently only playing The Climb. It is such a fun game!

I realised I got a cross-buy on the Oculus Rift platform (i.e. the PC Oculus store) for buying it on the Quest 2. So I fired it up and marveled at the higher fidelity, better environment details, lush foliage and countless BUGS (the actual kind) scurrying across the cliff faces that I’m clambering around on. It works just as great wirelessly via Virtual Desktop, so I have no incentive to continue playing the native Quest version, unless I’m away from my PC and happen to take the Quest 2 along with me. Oh, and the PC version also has an extra area to climb, the North, that the Quest version doesn’t have.

I love me some good pixel-art styles, be it in game or even artwork. But I immediately went to YouTube to see what you are talking about here and I can fully agree with you, it looks as though the fidelity is suffering as a result of poor resolution. Instantly put me off by that style.

Thanks for sharing.

Speaking of pixels, Crosscode is freaking amazing.
