Disney+ South Africa

The real question is, do they arrange their content in canonical, chronical or watch order?

Must say I’m seeing a lot of ads for Disney + on both dstv and youtube.

Is it just me or does the app feel slow or not very responsive?

There’s also some QOL things you come to expect when you e spent so much time with Netflix. You really get to appreciate the user experience of Netflix.

The US and UK version of the app is 100 times better than this second rate version we got in SA… :frowning:

Agreed, sadly. I believe it’s a rebrand of the Indian Hotstar app. The content is also severely lacking compared to the UK library, especially for kids entertainment. Luckily I still have a sub to my non-MEA account and will keep it active as long as the Hotstar+ app lacks in features and content.

Hold on, so if it is a different app, and you travel somewhere else in the world, will you not be able to watch that country’s content like every other streaming service I know enough about?

I subbed yesterday to not mis out on that R950 deal. But yeah, this app is kak. Fokol settings either.

Unsubbed, hardly worth it and the web app is horrible. Back to netflix.

Every time I start up my media box, I have to “Forcefully Stop” Disney+ and open it back up again for it to work. Otherwise I’m just looking at a spinning circle on the screen the whole time.

Maybe we need to ask @SIGSTART to do a follow-up with the Disney SA folk. It’s been two weeks now and things are still weird. And suggesting that the app is okay is doing SAfricans a huge disservice. I bet they don’t charge us the same as they do their Indian market subscribers. It’s not okay, it’s shite, and Hotstar are an embarrassment to the excellence that the Disney brand lives by.

There’s a bunch of additional North African and Middle Eastern nations getting Star with their Disney+ launches next week, and a bunch of European nations the week after. I wonder if they’ll all be getting the same crappy Hotstar version of the app as us?

My issues with the appare somewhat selfish, and QOL more than anything else, but there are some really frustrated folk out there - witness @Shrike and @FarligOpptreden here already. There’s folk with problems watching 4K content, older 4:3 aspect programming that gets pushed to the left side of the screen leaving a giant black on the right, lots of quality differences between devices, etc. The original “Disney+ plagued with technical glitches” forum thread on MyBroadBand continues to grow, and there are others.

  • I loathe the forced portrait orientation on mobile devices, especially the iPad.
  • I’m hugely disappointed in the quality of information shown on the program pages. Just one line of description, no cast list, no trailers, no further information, no reviews, no ratings, nada. The fact that I have to go to IMBD to find out more about a shows’ plot and to find the name of that actor and see where I recognise her from, is just daft. Hell, even Plex gives me more details and useful information, simply by pulling it in from the Movie Database or IMDB. Why can’t mega-bucks Disney do the same?
  • Search on the app for upcoming shows is utterly useless. Not one of the coming soon trailers I’ve posted for new Disney+ content can be found on the site until it launches.
  • Following a link to something on the service (on Edge, on PC at least) always sends me to Log in/Sign Up onboarding page. Every single link regardless of the fact that I’m logged into D+ with my valid account on that machine, and in that browser.
(Out of curiosity, please follow the link below on a machine you’re logged into and tell me what happens.)
  • And I’m still bothered by the lack of 2FA and the stupid, stupid phone number and OTP SMS login service.
  • Also, the fact that I got buffering on the first thing I watched on the service (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Episode 1) and that was in 1080p on a 200MB fibre line, using a cabled PC, just adds more salt to my wounds.

Trash app indeed.

I can’t really add more to this great post. Some extra frustrations that I’ve dealt with on the Hotstar app that I never had on the Disney+ app:

  • I’ve had several times where a show won’t auto-progress to the next episode and I manually had to start it.
  • Progress on the episode or in a series isn’t properly tracked and stored, so the “Continue watching” doesn’t work all that well and often reverts to a previous episode or the start of the episode.
  • BUFFERING everywhere. My experience through a VPN with the proper Disney+ app was never as bad.
  • Random auto-logout of my account, forcing another awful SMS OTP dance to be done.

EVERYTHING you said I can echo! That list is exactly my gripes!

I had this yesterday while on sick leave and watching Walking Dead. (yeah I said it, Disney + and you watch walking dead of all shows)
I also had an instance where it seems like I was in the Movies menu, but I could not go back to the main menu so I had to force kill the app.
I’m using a Hisense with Android TV built in.

Okay do I caved and actually, despite the well documented issues expressed here, signed up for Disney +. My daughter is too small to understand what’s she looking at but she likes Minne Mouse, so that was my excuse.

Yeah dude, I maintain that it’s currently the best streaming content provider there is for “wholesome” family and kids shows. Both my boys love the line-ups and they haven’t gotten tired of it. I realise that statement is very subjective, also I’m blocking out the whole “Disney is pure evil” stuff.

Same here. Dunno what Netflix is if Disney is classified as evil… But still, I watch whatever my boy does with him, if only to be able to engage with him and talk about it with him afterwards.

I concur, the content on Disney+ is great. Thats why I have used it for about 2 years already (feels like it) with jumping through hoops to get it and actually paying for the content.

Now their app just sucks. Hard. I even tried to roll back the app but they somehow managed to convince my Shield that the old Disney app is no longer available, regardless of which VPN I use.

This was shared with me the other day.

While I don’t support the notions. Just thought it necessary to share to give context into my comment

Disney is pretty evil though. I’m just speaking of the corporate greed, not their content.
