iRacing - The Ultimate in Sim Racing

Haha! Maybe then the Porsche is not bad either, it just does not suit my driving style

I see the test server is still up, so I will try give the Ford a go later today… If it is half as good as the Ferrari then its twice as good as the Porsche

Honestly though, the Porsche is quite the favourite in the races and I think if you can handle the Porsche it rewards you with better lap times. I am just not good enough for it!

As hard as you make it for yourself. Yes, there are tjops will dive into every corner and eek every little split second out of their time by driving recklessly. But if you drive sensibly and calm you can easily place in the top 20 with minimal incidents.

For example, in one race at Monza I qualified like 18th. I had a good green flag and made up some spots before T1. I managed to get through there with a 0x incident (I guess it was a “rubbing is racing” incident) and ended up 11th at the end of lap 1. Then I got greedy. I pushed super hard, fought for position and was really aggressive in my braking and attacking lines. I made it up all the way to 7th! I thought this was it! But then I got too aggressive in my defending at turn 1 (yes, that stupid chicane!!!). The guy behind me had the inside, but I followed the wide racing line turn in, and BAM! race ruined for both of us. If I played it cool, let him pass and then just have a better exit out of the chicane I would have passed him before the next chicane. So I learned a lot.

The trick for me is learning the tracks. I do a few laps on a test drive, just to get the lay of the corners and then I do an online practise. This helps me get used to the track, compare myself to other drivers, and even help me to learn from others. Another example: at Interlagos, the last sharp left before the final straight. I could not get a good exit speed there. Then I noticed the other guys go way off track before the turn. Turns out the curbs there are all considered part of the track, even though the seem far off.

As frustrating as iRacing can be it can also feel so rewarding! I compare it to golf: play one great shot and you will be back. Complete on great lap and you will race again

:ESSAY END:

EDIT: I just wish it is easier to race with friends! Nosferatie and I only had 1 race together and that was in the Radical aorund Silverstone…

Currently with the MX5 Cup that’s what I’ve been doing. Learn the track Monday and maybe Tuesday if I don’t have a good handle on it. Then after that I do time trials and then after that I do the racing.

My last couple of races have gone well. Would have gone even better if I had more confidence in taking on the chicane. Currently I slow down there where lots of people just go for it.

Also, I miss our league races. How do the equivalent work in iRacing? Have anyone looked into that at all?

I’m totally hogging this thread now.

But I see the Formula Sprint series uses the Formula 3 car and all the free tracks!

That’s bloody fantastic!

@DieGrootHammer, since you also want to play open wheel

That car is the best car that I tested yesterday. I hope they continue with that series in the next season. Since the next season will decide what cars and tracks I buy. I did some calculations and it’s crazy expensive.

So if they keep this Formula Sprint on free tracks then I’ll be over the moon.

I just had a go in the Porsche 919 (LMP1) around Monza… Wowowowow! What a car!

Also, the Ford is O…K… But prefer the Ferrari still. Have you tried it, @Solitude?

Yeah I tried the Ferrari. It drives fine but it sounds horrible haha. I’m fine going with that if that’s what most people would prefer.

Thinking as a group it has to be the Ferrari, it is far easier under braking and forgiving when the rear gets light. I drove it last night and was consistent low 1:47 around Monza.

IMSA is difficult especially if you race in a group with a high irating average. It demands more consistency I find. I’ve had some amazing races, but also races where I felt very downbeat afterwards. I need to work on my performance, especially under braking. I’m still 3 seconds off the pace which sucks in high class groups.

That said, I do enjoy it the most.

Then Ferrari it is! Are you happy with that @DieGrootHammer?

@Solitude you close to Class C hey…? Go get them!

I’m happy with the Ferrari. We still have a lot of time to make sure we choose the right car. Remember that in a 24h race the car is going to change constantly as tires gets old, time and temperatures change, so we’ll have to do a lot of experimentation to make sure we choose the right car.

Spare a thought for Oltman, he is doing a 3 hour endurance race with me in the VRS series in the Audi R8 GT3. He’s on his first stint with good times!

Ok, he’s doing the final stint, P19, 35min to go…!!!

Yeah thanks! I was actually hoping to get it to it this weekend but with power outages, internet outages and real life responsibilities I just couldn’t get to it. I hope that everything goes well this week and that I finally make it.

Just something to consider is the cost involved. I had a look last week and if you buy 6 pieces of content and get the discount then it’s still something like R1000. So for instance I will buy one GTE car, the F3 or Skippy car, and some tracks depending on the schedule and then next season do the same. So if you just buy 6 pieces of content every 3 months then it’ll be around R4000 plus the subscription for the year. But I’ll probably have to buy more than 6 initially. It’s an expensive game.

Very nicely done guys! Did you put it on Youtube? It’s a shame I missed it yesterday. Would have loved to have followed it.

Wow, this game sounds insane.

I was going to but had issues where my audio app wont let me run the game… So it would have been a very quiet show
The racing was not that tough. Once the dust settled it was more relaxing. I did not make it easy though, by getting a few off track incidents and thus ending the race with a 24x out of a max of 25x!!!

It was SUCH fun though!!! @Nosferatie really is driving well, he made some killer overtakes and his times were some of the fastest and most consistent! He can be my wing-man any time!

Nicely done! It does sound like fun.

Oi, and don’t call yourself the B team haha.

I just had a good look at the stats. The guy who came first, led for 96 laps, got a DQ because he was a 1 man team! So did a few other guys. And then some got DQ for their participation not being high enough.

While @Nosferatie was driving I read the rules… (his performance was so boringly stable!)

Teams vary from 2 - 7 drivers.
Each driver needs to drive 25% of an equal share. For example, if the race is 100 laps, and we are 2 drivers, then an equal share is 50 laps. So I needed to drive 25% of 50 laps, or 12.5 laps.
There are no rules over who can do qualifying or first stint, the team decides.

I will definitely be doing these more often! Such an awesome experience!!

That is true, if you feel you have to buy every track required for a series. My first set of purchases were the upcoming IMSA tracks, 1 IMSA car and Le Mans (I want to get in the practice NOW!). I will not be driving IMSA the next 2 weeks as the tracks are not that great and I wont be wasting money on them. During these times I will rather race cars and tracks I owe. So there are savings to be had.

The bottom line though, is that unless money is not an obstacle, you need to be smart in your purchases…
