Here’s a little guide for those who will be doing the Steam Secret Santa.
Ideally you want to buy R300’s worth of Steam games on special… or more. If you buy less than that or you don’t buy games on special then you are doing it wrong.
There are normally two Steam sales towards the end of the year. One at the beginning of December and then another around Christmas. It’s during these two sales when you’ll get the best deals.
Update your wishlists. If you have only a couple of games in your wishlist and all the games cost more than R300 then you are making it really really difficult for your Secret Santa.
Make your wishlist public! Or at least visible to friends and then make sure everyone who participate in this are you friends on Steam.
Order your wishlist by putting the games you want the most at the top of the list.
It’s not possible to buy a game and put it in your inventory and gift that to @Wyvern to give to someone else anymore. You either have to gift the games yourself or if @Wyvern is okay with it give her a Steam gift card and she’ll buy the games and gift it to your target. https://store.steampowered.com/digitalgiftcards/
Hopefully this will help people this year. Please post a link to your Steam wishlist in this thread to make things easier when the time comes.
Yeah, I remember you saying that was a concern for some last year, but I never had a problem buying an exact amount GC. Just checked again now, and it’s still possible…
Just makes sense to me to do it all through Steam to save you those irritating little international bank charges and having to switch between banks and Steam all the time. Also if the EFT comes from a different bank to yours, there’s always a chance that it won’t clear in your account immediately, and if the order is a little late the gifter may miss the end of the sale.
If you do want to do it this, source the games you want to gift and their prices, work out the total (easiest way is to add them to your cart as you decide, and then just delete them after - unless you wnat to order them for yourself as well) and then go here:
The Custom Amount card is the second one down. Entering the amount is a little finicky on Chrome (YMMV) but if you just double click into the field and type the amount over whatever is there it works. Use the comma as your decimal mark. Once you’ve entered the amount, click on the card itself and Steam will take you to your Friends list. Select @Wyvern (you are Friends with Santa’s Little Helper, aren’t you?!) as your Gift Card recipient, tell her in the message who your Secret Santa is, what games you’ve chosen for them and the message that you want to send them. And done.
If you don’t make your Wishlist public, or if you don’t have anything in your Wishlist, you will be getting every HuniePop asset flip clone dating sim game I can get for R300. And Shower With Your Dad. Surprise!!!
