Offbeat . . . Off Topic

Morning people.

Sitting in M&B. Just had a lekker coffee and muffin with my wife. We signed our will this morning. Deep stuff to talk about. Who will look after our girl if we both die, what to do if one of us is on life supportā€¦
Has to be done I guess.

Will watch it a bit later

So the husband got bad news about his engineā€¦ its gonna be 40k to fix and not just 17k, cause there was a lot more damage to the engine than just the cylinder headā€¦

Iā€™m guessing it was out of warranty? Stuff like this is the reason I always buy into extended warranties and the like. Iā€™m not one for unexpected expenses. I even have an excess waiver on my insurance so that in the case of an accident I donā€™t have to pay anything from my own pocket.

oh ja car is almost 7 years old.

You can still buy extended warranties for older cars through Motorite and the like. Maybe worthwhile looking into it if you guys are looking at keeping the car for a couple more years.

nah the car is/was in mint condition, i still think the garage f*&ked it up cause it had to go back 3 times(they replaced the thermostat and waterpump twice and then the dealership quoted 104k to replace the engine after the third time, so we took it somewhere else.

What was the reason it had to go to the garage in the first place? If you have claims that it was their fault you can potentially look into a settlement of sorts with them and get someone like the Motor Industry Ombudsman involved to help resolve the dispute.

the original complaint was an overheating issue, there was no water pressure in the pipes and we had to keep refilling the radiator. they then replaced the thermostat and waterpump as they said that was the issue. after we got the car back it started doing the same again after two days so the car was booked in again. when looking at it they said they could find anything wrong, we insisted they check as we were not going to take the car, they then came back saying oh ja seems the parts they replaced the previous we are faulty and will replace them again. get the car back and its fine for a couple of days then suddenly the car service light goes on if you turn the aircon on and we still have to keep topping up the radiator. book the car in again, and they say they cant find anything, we then escalate it and then they come back saying actually its the cylinder head and etc and we need to replace the engine and its going to cost R104k ex VAT.

Sell the car as is ā€œspares and repairsā€ and get something else

Yeah, likely the block has cracked due to being insufficiently cooled over a long period of time.

Had a genius mechanic that got oil into the cooling water system once. Buggered up the head biggly.

Seems like its hard to find good mechanics/agents you can trust to do a proper job these days

I donā€™t trust dealer mechanics at all (especially since my Ford debacle) so Iā€™ve resorted to getting a mechanic to do a basic service (mostly things I hate doing) and to sign the book. Then I drain the oil and replace it with an oil I trust and I replace the coolant (properly mixed and with a decent brand)

Things I donā€™t do, because I donā€™t trust anyone to except me and my mechanic, is allow anyone to check my oil and water levels in the car. I do it myself. Good maintenance make cars last for a very long time.
