The Outer Worlds

I still want to play it, its just sad that it is not multi player

Itā€™s a bonus that itā€™s not multiplayer! :grinning:

Iā€™ve played a fair bit of The Outer Worlds now and I somewhat agree with you.

For me itā€™s the characters (party members) and the lack of narrative around the ā€œcommon manā€.

Iā€™m just not finding the NPC party members that endearing (yet?).

And in a world where they ask you to make choices that impact a tremendous number of people, they donā€™t let you interact meaningfully with the average Joe.

This changes a little on Monarch, but I still donā€™t really have a sense of what the average worker on Terra-2 thinks, wants, is capable of, and such.

Iā€™m also not satisfied with the outcome of my choices in the opening segment of the game. Maybe it still lets me go back and deal with those consequences, so Iā€™m reserving judgement for now.

Iā€™m also with you. Iā€™m feeling somewhat disconnected from the game (the story and the characters). Itā€™s not a bad game and Iā€™m keeping at it, butā€¦ Iā€™ve had better.

I think the FPS part isnā€™t helping as I generally hate FPS games, although now that I think of it (after you mentioned it), I think it mostly relates to RPGs (since I did like Metro and Wolfenstein).

Where FPS RPGs do work well, is like with Borderlands which can be played multiplayer. I have a similar level of disconnect with this game as I have with Borderlands, although this story is slightly better in that I can actually follow the story. With Borderlands I forget what the story is about while playing the game, the ending usually comes as a surprise and afterwards I forget the story again.

Hopefully Iā€™ll finish this game tonight.

Iā€™m about 7 hours in and have to agree with you guys. Itā€™s not a bad game but itā€™s not really that great either.

Which means I have to go post in that thread about the 2019 games.

What you are all saying is making me incredibly sad. I was looking forward to this, I will play it in Dec with the cheap gamepass, but wont waste money on it otherwise.

That is wise, in my opinion.

Iā€™ve been wondering for awhile how much money studios are losing because of subscription services.

They are basically a way to get a cheap, long-term demo of a game before you decide to buy it in an age where demos are no longer a thing.

As a result of subscription services I will not be buying Anthem or The Outer Worlds.

Personally I am very happy with having played The Outer Worlds on a subscription service as I realised that if I had bought it that I would not have been happy with the short length of it. I REALLY enjoyed it but I clocked up 24 hours played with almost everything done.

Now I wish I can find Borderlands 3 on a sub service, as well as others.

Does it have achievements related to this?

ā€¦does Epic even HAVE achievements etc with their games?

Iā€™m sure EPIC will think of a gaming service eventually. I donā€™t know if it will be before or after their launcher works reliably.

There are achievements in the Microsoft Store version.

But not sure if there is an achievement for being genocidal

There isnā€™t. Only achievements for killing ā€œenemiesā€ and ā€œautomechanicalsā€.

Potential Story Spoilers in the 2nd half of the list, but there is a clear break and warning before scroll down far enough to see them

I hear people havenā€™t connected with the game, but that surely has not been the case for me. I love The Outer Worlds!! Itā€™s a bloody entertaining game, with awesome combat and great characters and story that I fell instantly in love with.

I have thoughts.

Iā€™ve been pumping a lot of time into this game and I agree with a lot of what the guys here have raised - while I think the game is pretty damn good, itā€™s just that: good.

The story isnā€™t exactly gripping or doing anything amazingly new. The locations are, fine? It all feels a bit copy paste at times, and Iā€™ve long since given up wandering around expecting to come across anything really surprising.

The gunplay is good enough, the gear options are fine, and enemy diversity is, well, okay too, I guess.

All the while Iā€™m playing I just keep thinking, man, I wish they would bring out another Fallout (not 76). Iā€™m probably going to load up Fallout 4 again after this.

Looking at it, itā€™s not all that different to Fallout (coming from the creators of Fallout, thatā€™s a given), but I donā€™t find the world as interesting. With Fallout, because of its setting, you expect to find an empty world, and piece things together through logs and environmental cues. The sense of exploring ruins and finding stuff is always there.

Here, itā€™s very much run-of-the-mill for me. Exploring isnā€™t really rewarded, just same old loot, occasionally with a Science Weapon to uncover. I just feel like thereā€™s not a whole lot to see. So I just run quests, go from A to B to C.

The characters are good though, and the dialogue is very much top quality - but aside from a couple of characters, the world and setting is so neutered that I donā€™t really care what happens to anyone - whether they live or die. Iā€™m more invested in my crew members, but not like a WHOLE lot. Except for Parvati, she deserves the stars.

The stakes generally feel kind of low. Thereā€™s no massive threat (and the game does not do well to introduce an antagonistic thread to motivate you to push on) and my character has no real reason to push forward except for the sake of pushing forward.

Even in each colony, on a local thereā€™s not much going on. The game plays in a lot of grey areas, so it poses a lot of strokey-beard philosophical quandaries - but in doing so also leaves me unsatisfied with any solution. I guess maybe that was the point. Play to the grey.

In any case, Iā€™m not enamoured with the game. Itā€™s fun, Iā€™m enjoying it - but playing it, Iā€™m wishing more for a Fallout 5 than I am for an Outer Worlds 2.

I will kill everyone in my next play through though.

Reading over your take, Iā€™m reminded of something I thought about but completely forgot to mentionā€¦

The Marauders.

(EXTREMELY MILD SPOILERS AHEAD)

Theyā€™re a completely underused ā€œgrey areaā€ and just arenā€™t properly justified. Like, if you hack certain terminals and read the messages on there you get a bit of a sense of how people end up as Marauders, but you canā€™t do anything with that information.

(MILD SPOILER AHEAD)

You canā€™t convince Marauders to stop being so maraud-ey, nor can you side with them. At least not based on my several hours of gameplay thusfar.

Thatā€™s slightly disappointing to hear, since after you turn the 1st bounties in at Edgewater, you get like a mini ā€œbackstoryā€ for each marauder. I was kinda hoping you can explore that a bit more further in the gameā€¦

Well said @qornea. I feel exactly the same.

Theyā€™re like raiders in Fallout - basically the ā€˜always an enemyā€™ faction. Unless you get into the DLCs where you can side with and become a raider too. But yeah, theyā€™re there for your bullets, little else.

The outlaws in OW are bit more pliable.

This game did handle the factions really well - but itā€™s also a bit shallow. I havenā€™t had any problems mostly keeping everyone happy so far.

Thatā€™s my plan too

I loved the game. The only real criticism I have is the copy/paste ā€œwildlifeā€ on every planet. Surely each planet should have itā€™s own unique faunaā€¦ oh and maybe a bit more weapon diversity. I pretty much just rolled with a LMG and flamethrower, they are OP AF
