I still want to play it, its just sad that it is not multi player
Itās a bonus that itās not multiplayer!
Iāve played a fair bit of The Outer Worlds now and I somewhat agree with you.
For me itās the characters (party members) and the lack of narrative around the ācommon manā.
Iām just not finding the NPC party members that endearing (yet?).
And in a world where they ask you to make choices that impact a tremendous number of people, they donāt let you interact meaningfully with the average Joe.
This changes a little on Monarch, but I still donāt really have a sense of what the average worker on Terra-2 thinks, wants, is capable of, and such.
Iām also not satisfied with the outcome of my choices in the opening segment of the game. Maybe it still lets me go back and deal with those consequences, so Iām reserving judgement for now.
Iām also with you. Iām feeling somewhat disconnected from the game (the story and the characters). Itās not a bad game and Iām keeping at it, butā¦ Iāve had better.
I think the FPS part isnāt helping as I generally hate FPS games, although now that I think of it (after you mentioned it), I think it mostly relates to RPGs (since I did like Metro and Wolfenstein).
Where FPS RPGs do work well, is like with Borderlands which can be played multiplayer. I have a similar level of disconnect with this game as I have with Borderlands, although this story is slightly better in that I can actually follow the story. With Borderlands I forget what the story is about while playing the game, the ending usually comes as a surprise and afterwards I forget the story again.
Hopefully Iāll finish this game tonight.
Iām about 7 hours in and have to agree with you guys. Itās not a bad game but itās not really that great either.
Which means I have to go post in that thread about the 2019 games.
What you are all saying is making me incredibly sad. I was looking forward to this, I will play it in Dec with the cheap gamepass, but wont waste money on it otherwise.
That is wise, in my opinion.
Iāve been wondering for awhile how much money studios are losing because of subscription services.
They are basically a way to get a cheap, long-term demo of a game before you decide to buy it in an age where demos are no longer a thing.
As a result of subscription services I will not be buying Anthem or The Outer Worlds.
Personally I am very happy with having played The Outer Worlds on a subscription service as I realised that if I had bought it that I would not have been happy with the short length of it. I REALLY enjoyed it but I clocked up 24 hours played with almost everything done.
Now I wish I can find Borderlands 3 on a sub service, as well as others.
Does it have achievements related to this?
ā¦does Epic even HAVE achievements etc with their games?
Iām sure EPIC will think of a gaming service eventually. I donāt know if it will be before or after their launcher works reliably.
There are achievements in the Microsoft Store version.
But not sure if there is an achievement for being genocidal
There isnāt. Only achievements for killing āenemiesā and āautomechanicalsā.
Potential Story Spoilers in the 2nd half of the list, but there is a clear break and warning before scroll down far enough to see them
I hear people havenāt connected with the game, but that surely has not been the case for me. I love The Outer Worlds!! Itās a bloody entertaining game, with awesome combat and great characters and story that I fell instantly in love with.
I have thoughts.
Iāve been pumping a lot of time into this game and I agree with a lot of what the guys here have raised - while I think the game is pretty damn good, itās just that: good.
The story isnāt exactly gripping or doing anything amazingly new. The locations are, fine? It all feels a bit copy paste at times, and Iāve long since given up wandering around expecting to come across anything really surprising.
The gunplay is good enough, the gear options are fine, and enemy diversity is, well, okay too, I guess.
All the while Iām playing I just keep thinking, man, I wish they would bring out another Fallout (not 76). Iām probably going to load up Fallout 4 again after this.
Looking at it, itās not all that different to Fallout (coming from the creators of Fallout, thatās a given), but I donāt find the world as interesting. With Fallout, because of its setting, you expect to find an empty world, and piece things together through logs and environmental cues. The sense of exploring ruins and finding stuff is always there.
Here, itās very much run-of-the-mill for me. Exploring isnāt really rewarded, just same old loot, occasionally with a Science Weapon to uncover. I just feel like thereās not a whole lot to see. So I just run quests, go from A to B to C.
The characters are good though, and the dialogue is very much top quality - but aside from a couple of characters, the world and setting is so neutered that I donāt really care what happens to anyone - whether they live or die. Iām more invested in my crew members, but not like a WHOLE lot. Except for Parvati, she deserves the stars.
The stakes generally feel kind of low. Thereās no massive threat (and the game does not do well to introduce an antagonistic thread to motivate you to push on) and my character has no real reason to push forward except for the sake of pushing forward.
Even in each colony, on a local thereās not much going on. The game plays in a lot of grey areas, so it poses a lot of strokey-beard philosophical quandaries - but in doing so also leaves me unsatisfied with any solution. I guess maybe that was the point. Play to the grey.
In any case, Iām not enamoured with the game. Itās fun, Iām enjoying it - but playing it, Iām wishing more for a Fallout 5 than I am for an Outer Worlds 2.
I will kill everyone in my next play through though.
Reading over your take, Iām reminded of something I thought about but completely forgot to mentionā¦
The Marauders.
(EXTREMELY MILD SPOILERS AHEAD)
Theyāre a completely underused āgrey areaā and just arenāt properly justified. Like, if you hack certain terminals and read the messages on there you get a bit of a sense of how people end up as Marauders, but you canāt do anything with that information.
(MILD SPOILER AHEAD)
You canāt convince Marauders to stop being so maraud-ey, nor can you side with them. At least not based on my several hours of gameplay thusfar.
Thatās slightly disappointing to hear, since after you turn the 1st bounties in at Edgewater, you get like a mini ābackstoryā for each marauder. I was kinda hoping you can explore that a bit more further in the gameā¦
Theyāre like raiders in Fallout - basically the āalways an enemyā faction. Unless you get into the DLCs where you can side with and become a raider too. But yeah, theyāre there for your bullets, little else.
The outlaws in OW are bit more pliable.
This game did handle the factions really well - but itās also a bit shallow. I havenāt had any problems mostly keeping everyone happy so far.
Thatās my plan too
I loved the game. The only real criticism I have is the copy/paste āwildlifeā on every planet. Surely each planet should have itās own unique faunaā¦ oh and maybe a bit more weapon diversity. I pretty much just rolled with a LMG and flamethrower, they are OP AF
so far im finding plasma rifle superior to what ive fiddled with.
