Free Movement FTW…
Although games that implement it in a smart/logical way makes it feel a lot better than dpad style.
But obviously if you are unsure about motion sickness then stick with teleport.
I fired it up quickly this morning and played for about 15 minutes. First impression was: WOW, the graphics are stupidly good and the immersion with being able to interact with just about anything is scarily real. I just need to increase my guardian play size, as I’m frequently hitting the boundaries I set for myself.
Regarding movement, I’m using the teleport. I tried free movement for a couple of seconds and kept feeling like I want to fall over, so obviously I need to train my brain and middle ear to deal with this type of motion first. Granted, I’ve only used VR for a grand total of 3 hours so far. My niece is still hogging the headset while she’s visiting us.
Yip, I also teleport. One day when my gut is stronger I will maybe try free movement.
Have you done any VR racing yet? I sadly cannot stomach it yet, as Project Cars 2, Dirt Rally 2 and ACC all make me incredibly motion sick.
OH - I see I got a free copy of Asgard’s Wrath linked to my Oculus library due to purchasing a Quest 2 over the festive season! Huge install size though… 132GB!
I have tried, and I cannot do it! The motion sickness is real and its bad!
I’m so used to it that crashing my car in Dirt Rally 2.0 and doing mulitple flips feels absolutely fine… Maybe I should get Windlands and see if I’m able to play that now, I kinda feel it’ll still be my weakness though.
I did the wireless setup now and it truly is liberating! I’m surprised it worked this well. There is a slight graininess to the visuals compared to a tethered setup, but after a couple of seconds you forget about it and become immersed in the game world.
Can we all just appreciate the technical marvel that is Half-Life: Alyx? The immersion is simply astounding. After 45min into the game I still find myself stepping back when opening doors, peer into and over everything I can and being grossed out by health stations and that Combine puzzle near the beginning of the game. I really lose myself in the game and forget that I’m in my study.
I’m waiting to spot some epic mods to get back into it. There are already quite a few, just need to test them out when I have time.
Does anyone know of a local shop selling HP Reverb G2?
Hpshop.co.za is only letting you register your interest. Only place I could find.
Otherwise you can try WantItAll com. Think I saw it on there for like R40k…
wantillall can write it on their perineum. But i’ll register my interest with hpshop, thanks
$600 on the US HP site = ~R10K, HTXT saying suggested SA retail price will be R16K, and WantItAll importing it for R40K. Even the 60% extra that is being suggested as retail is nonsense. R40K is laughable.
Local prices for VR headsets are always madness. That why I will rather buy from places like Amazon.
Oops, sorry, my WantItAll.com comment was a joke. Their prices are always super high and frankly, ridiculous. Their URL is basically them admitting they want it all regarding your money.
I could not actually find the HP Reverb G2 on there, but they do have the Valve Index…
Blady madness hahahaha.
Edit: well, I just checked it out on Amazon now(the full kit) and it comes to R48k including shipping, so not far off, but I do notice that the price is currently at it’s highest.
I had a strange experience this morning. I tried out No Man’s Sky (thanks XBOX Game Pass) through SteamVR, streaming wireless to the Quest 2 via Virtual desktop. As per my experience with Half-Life: Alyx, I played with teleport movement. After a while I started fiddling with the settings and turned on smooth movement, based on head tracking. I expected to barf within minutes, but strangely I didn’t feel sick at all. The same for the space flight (which was incredibly immersive), which only felt weird due to the virtual HOTAS concept they implemented.
So I find it weird that NMS doesn’t make me motion sick, while racing sims and non-teleport movement in Half-Life: Alyx made me feel incredibly ill. Maybe my mind has started conditioning itself to VR and I should give the others another go?
That can perhaps be, give it a shot maybe? also it also depends on how fast you move when you use smooth motion, that might also throw you off, another thing is FPS, if you have FPS drops it can ruin your day. ask @aldyr
I knew I should have gotten it at launch at $999
Even me. This is why I play Dirt 2 on such low settings. I get headaches before I even notice the drops.
So I played around with the bitrate, quality and codec of Virtual Desktop and managed to get an even better looking image on the Quest 2! Added to more fiddling with my IPD setting on the headset itself, Half-Life:Alyx looked incredibly crisp. It probably helps that my desktop is wired to one of my mesh nodes and the Quest 2 connects wirelessly to that specific node via 5GHz wifi.
