Today is: :star: World Arthritis Day

Yeah I know, another boring “health” day. But as important as mental health is, physical health is too. And this is one of those physical ailments that frail, puny humans don’t pay enough attention to, until it’s too late.

Throughout the world millions of people are affected by arthritis, their lives being changed by the sometimes constant pain of inflamed joints.

World Arthritis Day is a day to remember and raise awareness of this condition, and how it affects the lives of those that suffer with it. World Arthritis day was brought about by the Arthritis Foundation to do just that, and to encourage policymakers to help lower the burden of those suffering from Arthritis all over the world.

Arthritis is cleanly summed up in its name, being derived from the greek words arthro, meaning joint, and itis, meaning inflammation. As the name implies it is a condition involving inflammation of the joints, but unlike the common conception that it is a disease all its own, it is always a symptom of another affliction.

Gout, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, and Lupus are just some of the more common causes of this painful and often crippling condition. Arthritis has been shown to have been with us as long as creatures have had bones, there’s even evidence that ankle arthritis was present in dinosaurs by the study of fossils.

Research has shown that it has been present in humans at least as far back as 4500 BC, and has been shown to be one of the most common afflictions of the prehistoric peoples. It was first closely examined and classified in William Musgraves work, De Arthritide symptomatica, written in 1715.

image

For conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, there is no cure, though there are often treatments that can be done. Largely these are basic health controls, including increasing exercise and working to reduce your weight.

Other than that the usual treatments are pharmaceutical in nature and focus on reducing the pain of the condition rather than seeking to remove it.

Physical therapy has often been seen to be effective in helping, but the nature of the condition often impedes the implementation of such therapy. Motion hurts, but motion is shown to be among the best treatments. By keeping the joint mobile it helps to reduce the constant inflammation and has shown marked improvements in the long-term relief of the pain associated with it.

Many people associate this condition with the elderly and the health concerns that affect them, and statistical evidence supports that those over 65 are in fact the primary sufferers. But there is an often forgotten section of people who are under that age, almost 30% of all sufferers are under the age of 65, with some of them being no older than their teen years, and some rare cases existing even in the very young.

Take the time to educate yourself on this condition, and find the ways you can help prevent or hold-off this condition in your own life. By taking steps to improve your health today, you can help prevent this being something that limits your life. You can also pop on over to the Arthritis Foundations webpage and take their test to find out if you’re at risk for Osteoarthritis.

World Arthritis Day is a great time to get out and lend a helping hand to those suffering from this condition. If you have relatives who suffer from it, take a day to go over and help them out with the things that are made difficult for them because of their condition. Take some time to do some research and get a clear understanding of how people have their lives affected by it.

Stretch and flex those joints - you’re not getting any younger! And have a great Tuesday. :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: No Bra Day

Every year hundreds of thousands new cases of breast cancer occur in the United States alone, with approximately 250,000 of them being invasive forms of breast cancer, and an additional 2,600 cases being found in men.

No Bra Day encourages women everywhere to go without their bra to raise awareness for breast cancer and the challenges that those with it faces. If you know someone who has been affected by Breast Cancer or just want to help continue the fight against it, No Bra Day is an opportunity to help those around you know that the fight is ongoing!

image

If you are a woman and you are reading this, you will know exactly what we are referring to when we say that removing your bra once you get home is one of life’s great pleasures! If you are a man, you will just have to take our word for it. However, No Bra Day does not celebrate this little comfort that all women can relate to. It is much bigger and more important than this.

No Bra Day is about the fight against breast cancer. A lot of people know someone who has experienced breast cancer. It is a horrible disease, which can have a heartbreaking conclusion.

image

No Bra Day encourages women around the world to ditch their bra to raise awareness for this disease. It is a great day in terms of supporting women who have experienced breast cancer or are going through it at the moment, as well as raising awareness about the condition so that we can, hopefully, find a cure for it.

Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer. In fact, it is believed that one in eight women will be diagnosed with this illness in their lifetime. That’s a pretty high number! While there is a good chance of recovery, there have been a lot of women who have lost their lives because of this terrible disease.

image

Early diagnosis is imperative, and while breast cancer is most common in women over the age of 50-years-old, women of any age can get it. It is important that we have days like No Bra Day so that we can raise awareness about this condition and make sure that we are all doing our best to raise funds and education so that we can find a cure for breast cancer.

No Bra Day was established to both raise awareness of breast cancer and its prevalence in today’s society, as well as to drive opportunities for fund-raising to help keep the research moving. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lives and have to battle a disease that can, at worst, be lethal.

image

But outside of just its lethality, it also has the possibility of impacting a woman’s view of herself, her ability to breastfeed, and can result in surgeries that include mastectomies. Breasts are of the primary identifiers of what makes a woman, visually, a woman, and having to have them removed in the fight against breast cancer can lead to self-image issues and depression.

“No Bra Day” may sound like some sexy, frivolous fun at first, but it isn’t. It’s darn serious. Ladies, get your boobs checked regularly. But do feel free to go braless if you’d like and if your comfortable time it’s it! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: World Standards Day

World Standards Day is an international day celebrated internationally each year on 14 October. The day honours the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organisations. The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulators, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardisation to the global economy.

Throughout the world, there is a set of standards that have been established that companies, organizations, and industries have all agreed to hold up.

image

These standards have been established by mutual agreement between these organizations as part of their participation in the ISO, the International Organization for Standardization. It was these kinds of standards that helped drive the industrial revolution, and today it drives the advancement of all technologies from automotive to telecommunications. World Standards Day celebrates the work of these men and women, and the contribution their work makes to the world at large.

Standards are important, we all know that and were all raised with this concept, but it’s entirely possible that we aren’t truly cognizant of just how vitally important standards can be. In the days before international standards and industrialization things, there was no way to get a replacement part for a machine or piece of equipment that you owned without going to the original manufacturer. Even then it was entirely possible that they’d only be able to do a ‘best fit’ sort of fix. Without automation or a set of standards to work by, every piece of these machines was purpose-built, meaning they were unique to that device

The industrial revolution saw the beginning of an important change, and while many people say that fire was man’s most important invention, it’s entirely possible that it was actually standardization. Today when you need a replacement screw, you know you can go down to the hardware store and get one.

When you get a new router you know that it will be able to communicate with the networks and other electronic equipment because they all operate on a set of standardized frequencies. Even your cars run on a certain kind of fuel because the ISO set the standard for vehicles of that type. World Standards Day celebrates the hard work of the ISO and the way that it has shaped the world we have today.

The best way to Celebrate World Standards Day is just to take some time to contemplate all of the things in your life that are standardized, and how much easier it makes things.

Standards dictate the sizes, shapes, composition, frequency, and all the other fiddly bits that make our world fit together. Imagine what our lives would be without standardization!

Keep it ISO now! We’ve got standards around here, you know?! :+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Global Handwashing Day

October 15 is Global Handwashing Day, a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

If you think that not washing your hands after leaving the bathroom is disgusting, then you’ll probably be surprised at how many people don’t wash their hands daily. Thus, comes in Global Handwashing Day, a day where good hygiene is encouraged and practiced all around the world by millions of people.

image

This campaign, established by the Global Handwashing Partnership in 2008, was made to help motivate people to improve their hand washing habits. This day was promoted by the UN General Assembly when its first event took place during World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden.

World Water Week is a week-long global water conference that addresses the issues of sustainability with water consumption and development. The focus for Global Handwashing Day was school children. This global advocacy day successfully reigned in with over 120 million children around the world participating in better hand care in over 70 countries around the world.

India was one of their biggest participants during that year, as cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his teammates joined an estimated 100 million school children around the country in lathering up for better health and hygiene.

According to their website, each year over 100 million people participate in this event in over 100 countries and is endorsed by various governments, institutions, and organizations to promote better hand washing.

The GHP implements new and creative ways to promote people to wash hands with soap and continues to do research during this day to track the progress of human routine.

According to a study conducted by the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal, hand care can reduce the mortality rate of respiratory disease by 25% and diarrheal diseases can be reduced by 50%, and this is all just by washing your hands with soap.

The day pre-dates the Covid pandemic by several years, but has never been more significant. Frequent handwashing with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds is proven to help reduce the spread of the virus. Do it now!

Wash your hands! Again! Properly this time. With soap! I’m watching you…:lotion_bottle::+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: World Food Day :shallow_pan_of_food:

“Food, glorious food! We’re anxious to try it. Three banquets a day — Our favourite diet!”

We are sure that you are all familiar with the famous lyrics from Oliver!, and we’re sure you can all relate to them too! After all, who doesn’t love some good ol’ grub? From pizza to pasta, cookies to cakes, and all of the good stuff in between, there are so many amazing dishes and ingredients for us to indulge in today, and World Food Day celebrates them all.

World Food Day is not only about celebrating the amazing food that we have the privilege of indulging in, but it is about raising awareness for people who do not have such privilege. There are people all over the world who are suffering from hunger. Starvation is a massive problem in a number of countries, and we need to do more to raise awareness and combat this problem. It seems crazy that we live in a world whereby a large portion of the population can indulge in any sort of food they wish without a second thought while others struggle to put food on the table.

We can also use World Food Day to raise awareness about healthy diets and what our bodies need. In recent times, education has grown about healthy diets and what foods are good and bad for our bodies, but we are not there yet! World Food Day gives us a great opportunity to further education and awareness in this area.

World Food Day was first launched in 1945. The reason World Food Day was created was to celebrate the launch of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation.

image

The main principle which World Food Day celebrates is the furtherance of food security all over the world, especially in times of crisis. The launch of the Food and Agriculture Organisation by the UN has played a huge role in taking this worthy goal forward. Its annual celebration serves as a marker of the importance of this organisation and helps to raise awareness of the crucial need for successful agriculture policies to be implemented by governments across the world to ensure there is ample food available for everyone.

In recent years, World Food Day has used its annual day of celebration to focus on different aspects of food security and agriculture, including fishing communities, climate change and biodiversity.

image

There are a number of different themes that have been attributed to World Food Day over the years. We definitely recommend checking out the theme each year so that you can base your activities on this date on the theme in question. For example, some of the themes there have been in the past include; “Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too”, “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty”, and “Feeding the world, caring for the earth”, which was based on family farming.

One of the best ways to celebrate World Food Day is by giving food to people who need it the most. If you do a quick search online, you should be able to find the nearest food bank to you. Most food banks are going to accept food or money.

The sort of food that is in a typical food parcel includes biscuits, tinned fruit, tea, coffee, tinned vegetables, tinned meat, beans, pasta sauce, rice, pasta, soup, and cereal. You could also volunteer your time, food banks are often looking for willing volunteers. No matter how much time you have to spare, we are sure that it will be appreciated.

Appreciate your food today, and every day! Appreciate where it comes from, how it gets to you, and that you have it in the first place. And if you have enough for you and yours, perhaps consider those that don’t have enough. :shallow_pan_of_food::+1::grinning:

Today is: :star: Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day

There are tidy desktops, and cluttered desktops, organized desktops, and ones with icon scattered everywhere. Which one do you have?

If you take it in terms of acreage, there are billions of acres of virtual desktop in the world today, and much of that is heavily cluttered. Clean your Virtual Desktop day is your opportunity to bring a little sense and order to your desktop.

Clean your Virtual Desktop Day was first created by the good people at the PC Museum Canada, to encourage people to sort out their desktops and return it to that pristine vision they received when they first booted up their computer. An orderly desktop has been said to be the sign of an orderly mind, someone who has their work together, and knows what their tool is for and how to use it.

While it may seem simple, there are actually a number of ways to observe Clean Your Virtual Desktop Day.

Go through your files on your desktop and determine which ones are no longer necessary, and send them to the virtual round file (That’s the recycling bin, for all that it’s opening is rectangular).

image

Then sort the others into folders on your computer, or on your desktop if that’s your won’t. But don’t overdo it! So much better to have things stored in the document folder than scattered in folders across your desktop!

Transfer photos on your desktop to storage devices like flash drives or SD cards, or just save them in special folders on your hard drive. And make use of any cloud storage you may have access to as well. You do not want catastrophe to strike and have all those precious memories lost.

However you go about it, cleaning out your desktop will make it easier to find things, and be more productive with your PC.

While you’re at it, be sure to consider changing your theme to take advantage of your beautifully clean desktop! There’s a lot of options out there in just about every style you can imagine, some of them even change up your mouse cursor to really customize your visual experience.

Start your week off with a little desktop spring cleaning. You won’t regret it! Post pics of your tidy desktops below (and if you’re really proud of them, over in the dedicated Show Us Your Current Wallpaper topic too!) :+1::grinning:
